Why Do We Love Rumors?
62Believe half of what you see and none of what you hear...!
Our Lives Are Like a Soap Opera
Why do we gravitate toward conspiracy theories, unproven and usually unprovable stories that are so fantastic that we just have to believe them to be true? Bill Clinton frequently conferred with space aliens about domestic policy, Hillary Clinton is really a man in drag, Barack Obama was not born in the U.S., and on and on and on.
We live in a world where disinformation, outright lies and slander can be spread anonymously and rapidly via electronic means, where people who are on the edge of sanity can cause huge numbers of people to follow a lie, and where lies are spreading like locusts. It began years ago, and it won't stop, simply because we love to believe the lies!
Face it, a good, slanderous story about some famous person is like honey on toast - we crave the flavor and savor the texture of a good, albeit false, bit of information about someone who we perceive has it better than us. Thus a wealthy man with everything he could desire is really a secret child pornography hoarder. A woman who is famous must have slept with Hollywood agents to get where she's at.
In short, like our ancestors, we envy those who somehow, usually, we believe, through nefarious means, got ahead of us in the game. All sports stars use drugs, all doctors rip off the system, all government employees are on the take, etc and etc. ad nausea.
I recently got, for about the fifth time in the past seven years, an email about Mars coming so close to the Earth that it would look like the Moon to us. No, it's not true, and no, it's not new. I read the same thing seven years ago when I debunked it, and believe it or not, the very same people I told it was not true sent it to me again! Do we ever learn? It seems not.
OK, so here is my point. Obama is a U.S. Citizen, born in Hawaii, and the State of Hawaii says so, on a legal document, and there are newspaper announcements when he was born telling that he was born in Hawaii. So why does the birther question linger out there? Is there any information that would possibly stop the lies and rumors? Heck, even a copy of the actual birth record, which I understand can't be released by state law in Hawaii, as it is in many other states, would not stop this because then there'd be a rumor that even that was fake.
We don't believe it!
Well, I am certain that some of us out here in Hubland do not believe that Obama is a citizen, natural-born in the good old U.S. of A., but you have to remember that in America we have this old, long time custom of people being innocent until proven guilty. So, the burden of proof for any conspiracy theorist is to provide abundant, overwhelming proof of their ideas in order for these ideas to be accepted. Merely stating that you don't believe something is not an argument in favor of your theory; it is simply your opinion, and opinions are much like like anuses, all people have them.
So, does anyone have ample, irrefutable proof that Barack Obama is not a U.S. citizen, natural-born, etc.? If so, then bring it forward, take it top court and get a lawsuit going. Otherwise, stop pretending your theories as if they are fact. Fact is not opinion, or hope, anything else but simple, plain truth. And if it ain't the truth, it ain't a fact!
Yes, my friends, the document given by the State of Hawaii IS an actual copy authenticated by the Alvin T. Onaka, Ph.D. the State Registrar of Hawaii. So, that makes it official.
Hawaii Document
Please, no forgeries and no false testimony.
OK, for those who still believe the Kenyan birth certificate is proof of Obama being born there, sorry. Kenya has denied it is or ever was produced in Kenya. Some journalists found out, however, that the so-called proof is actually a badly made forged copy of an Australian birth certificate, and Australian officials are rather upset. They are reportedly going to seek to press charges for falsifying government records. So please, no more false testimony. For Christians doing this, isn't there something about bearing false witness? Better watch out, if you are spreading lies.
You can check this all out at FactCheck.org if you wish to know the truth instead of spreading the lies. Of course, some people already have their minds made up, so don't confuse them with the facts.
Oh, and here below is a newspaper announcement of Barack Obama's birth in Hawaii. Now PLEASE tell me his mother faked this just to get her son's birth registered in the U.S., and then explain how a letter from Kenya, in the early 1960's, could have arrived so soon to make this timely announcement possible! And then tell me how the newspaper would have accepted this as an announcement when they check with the hospital to get the information about live births, and do not (and did not) accept letters, especially those with foreign post marks.
Since the hospital would have informed the newspaper, would it not be a stretch to say he was born elsewhere but his mom just knew he'd be president one day, and so had all this info faked? When does a conspiracy theory become just so much hot air? Right about now, I'd say.
But for those of us stuck on believed poorly defended conspiracy theories such as this, maybe the same space aliens that advised President Clinton will take Barack Obama home with them. Would that make the birthers happy? Somehow, I doubt it.

Unfortunately there are too many. Both political parties seem to rely on inuendo and false charges. Right now it's mainly the GOP, but the Dems have been guilty of it as well. I remember the MoveOn add for "General Betray-us" which irked me. Now Sarah "Never let the facts get in the way" Palin is still harping on Deatrh Panels. I wonder if she can read?
Obama has a tough row to hoe with health care reform, and I believe it is mainly his own fault. By trying too hard not to do what Bill & Hillary Clinton did back in Clinton's first term, he has more or less abdicated his responsibility to the Congress, which will dummy down any attempt at this.
And with people out there charging, mostly without facts to back them up, that we are making this change to imitate Europe or Canada, both of which have excellent health care systems, by the way, people are all up in arms over a rumor and a lie.
It seems we in America have not lost our lynch mob mentality - believe the lies and hang the wrong person. In this case believe the lies and deny ourselves a much needed change to health care.
People just don't want to think for themselves. That's it, plain and simple.
It's all about the Benjamins; who controls them and the false wealth and power they bestow.
People who seek supremacy will stop at NOTHING to attain it.
People with money & power love to make us all little puppets on strings. time to finish what our ancestors began so long ago.
Hey Chef! Nice to see your work again. You really had me the first half. I am in total harmony with what you are saying here and guilty as well. As for the second half, I had no idea Obama's birth locale remained an issue so it was somewhat of a surprise. But I enjoyed your points.
I am so sad that our politicians have to focus on getting reelected to the detriment of the public need. It feels as if the US has gotten so polarized since November. Republican friends of mine can't stand to even break bread with an Independent much less a Democrat. And these are so called Christians.
What would Jesus do? He broke bread with the bottom rung of society, so I suppose it depends on who sits there at present.
I'm reacting very lately perhaps. But Mr. Chef has worked labouriously for this hub. This article provides much material to think about.Really, rumour lovers kill the peace of their neibhourhood and spoil lives. I have a bitter experience recently, in which a fourty year old Lady doctor was beaten by her doctor husband in anger ( about 50 times) for the simple reason that she developed fatherly love towords a sixty year old person who has a philosophical mind. The reason for his anger was-Somebody may speak ill of him andhis wife.!
CWB, you are right, money talks and walks, and those that got it just hate to share. Too bad since we are supposed to be the wealthiest nation on Earth, yet we have a third-world outlook about many things, such as healthcare and paying decent wages.
Mad Dog, we never quite finished our revolution, did we? Somehow, after supposedly throwing off the schackles of aristocracy we put them right back on, with wealth & power taking the place of titles of nobility.
Storytellersrus, great to hear from you again, too! Yes, birthers are still out there, screaming at the top of their lungs and refusing to believe the proof before them. Oh well, we can all be delusional at times.
Prasadjain, I am sorry about the woman you write about. Men can sometimes forget that women do not deserve to be punished and women can have friends without any loss of honour for her husband.
Ivan, we all know people who just follow the crowd, without checking things out first. Glenn Beck supposedly put together this 9-12 thing, and he has been vehement in his anger and hatred as of late. I used to like to listen to the guy about five years ago, but now I just shudder at how he lies and gets away with it. Guess I should have seen it coming! Absolute power does corrupt absolutely, and Beck is corrupted from head to toe. At least when he was with CNN they put some sort of restraint on him, making him at least attempt to follow some code of ethics.
There's always a reason for balance, but we seldom balance things here. Too bad for us.
Yes, too bad for us. ALL of us the world over.
Great hub! I also posted it on my Facebook! Take care!
