Even Hillary Does it--In Heels

"He praised Clinton for the strides that her campaign made on behalf of women, noting that his daughters will benefit from her efforts. “They can take for granted that women can do anything that the boys can do, and do it better and to it in heels,” Obama said and then joked, “I don’t know how she does it in heels!” Clinton laughed with the crowd."

From CBS News' Maria Gavrilovic: June 27, 2008, 4:03 PM

Barack Obama may have been making an off-the-cuff joke, but when I heard it, after I laughed at  remark, I began to wonder...'well why DO women wear such things?'

Why do women wear high-heels and where did the practise originate?

One Word?

I know that if you had to provide a one-word answer that answer would be 'vanity'. "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity" says Ecclessiates in the bible, but is it really so?

Are women so simple that they would do anything, including wearing a small, pinchy,pointy,forty-degree-angled piece of wood and leather/plastic on their feet for hours at a time and in conditions of high-danger or at the very least high-stress, just because 'it makes them look good?' After all, other fashion trends that were equally if not more painful to flaunt, like girdles and bustles, have faded into the mists of time, whereas high-heels have never wavered in their popularity right down to the present day, as Hillary Clinton herself proves.

Why NOT to wear 'heels'

* ouch!

* bunnions, hammertoes, and other unsightly deformations can occur

* hard to run in (or let's be truthful, dance, walk, jog,and stand!)

* damage to knee-joint can occur over time due to more stress on the tendon at the knee-cap

* good news for podiatrists/bad news for the patient

It's All About Sex

According to L.Langner in his book The Importance of Wearing Clothes, clothing does more than just keep us warm and dry.

It also has a symbolic significance in that it allows us to both modestly cover up things we most want to hide (in particular sexual organs) but at the same time, draws attention to those very things without it being obvious. (People are never

simple and women especially so.)

Shoes are Phallic Symbols

Thus we have bras, which cover the breasts for modesty and yet pad and lift them for attention. The now out of date 'bustle' which properly hid the 'bum', but made up for this deception by making it ten times bigger than it really was.So, feet, being far away from the genital area, need more than average ornamentation, in order to make their sexual point, which according to Langner is one of a phallic nature.

Obvious reasons why they DO wear them:

* the calves get the focus

* to wear them you must stand very straight and walk in a way that is considered seductive

* they make you taller

* they accentuate your legs as opposed to your feet

* the 'glutes' get pulled tight which will show if your dress fits the 'right way'

* some evidence they may enhance the tone and firmness of the pelvic floor

Quashed by the Court

So we see in the middle ages shoes for women being long, tapered and pointed, and not at all unlike an uncircumcised penis. So scandalous did this style become that Charles V and Pope Urban tried to squash the style with decries and declamations.

But at this time women were not alone in seeking the long-toe-look, as there are numerous examples of men following this fad to fullest as well.

A Medieval 'Patten'

Elevate Yourself

At any rate, the other element which is involved in the high-heel style is the heel itself. What was the inspiration of this elevated-element?

Most certainly it came from the original need to keep 'good shoes' from being soiled by filthy medieval streets for one.

And so an attachment was invented, a 'patten' which, when fixed to the shoe, would allow the wearer to ride above the muck and shoe, dress and all would be free of dragging in the dirt until one was safely inside in a relatively clean place where the mud-soaked patten could be removed. But of course this was not the only reason for elevating shoes.

Venetian 'Chopines'

The other was, as we see in the Venetian styled courtesan shoe, that the elevation is built right into the shoe. This was done for reasons of status, as well as for the definite psychological advantage it provided the wearer--namely that the taller the woman the more dominant she felt--both over shorter men and over society at large.

Kinky to Stylish

Our modern day has seen elevation in shoes from platform heels to the kinky thigh-high boots popular in the 1960's and many in-between styles. Do they all say, really, the same thing? I am bigger, sleeker, slimmer, sexier in these than nature made me, and that is worth the discomfort?

Why have high-heels survived, and indeed, thrived in today's world?

It's always the same answer.

Sex is always IN.

High heels receive a lot of flack for being uncomfortable and they also receive the blame for a number of foot ailments or injuries many endure. Most of the time it is because the wearer didn't get the right fit and /or it's the quality of which the heels were made that was not the best for the wearer's particular feet. Then again, their feet may have imperfections that prohibit them from getting the desired comfort. So many variables to consider, but the fact remains, there are many who really enjoy wearing high heels.

Using the sexual and sensual arguements to explain why people are fascinated with heels, does have some truth and validity. However, there are those who think that sex has a part in everything. If that is the narrow-minded limitation some people can acheive, then I feel sorry they won't be able to enjoy the bigger picture that the experience of life has to offer.

Let's face it, high heels have taken the strictly protective purpose of the shoe and added the styling and design to enhance the profile of a person's feet. There are other benefits and concerns the wearer should and will have, but that is now the basic reason for high heels. This redesigning of the shoe has made such footwear more pleasing to wear and behold than the simple protective covering that low or no heeled shoes have. This also brought more options to the variety of styling one could acheive in attiring.

As an addendum to this subject, there is another matter of great importance to be addressed here. One of the cruelest mis-understandings our society has produced is not being aware that there are men who would also like to have the same options to wear high heels. Many of the heels are bought by and for the use of men. This is not an alternative lifestyle. It only seems that way because society has not recognized and accepted the true feelings and desires people have. We all have likes and dislikes according to who we are. Right now, there are socially dictated norms that do not reflect this attitude, but the reality has shown people do have the wants and the needs that cross our so called "social gender line". The right to choose our own attire should be restored to correct this social usurption.

I think it is stupid to have a woman walk on her toes all day. I guess it looks sexy but I would prefer a girl in sandals. After wearing the high heels for years a girls toes get pushed in and look bad. I just don't think it is worth it.

I am glad that this fashion has been kept, as I think women do look great in high heels!
