Do you know why Americans celebrate the 4th of July each year, and have done since 1776?, or why NY Fireworks should make the news?. If you dont know , come along with me and lets find out.
I needed to know this important part in America's history ,and so I have written about it in a way that is simple, and easy to understand, why it is that Americans celebrate, and hold the 4th of July a very special day. I will also include relevant links to events that explain more in detail and even treats to make the lesson even more memorable.
I know that most people love to eat cake and who could resist the recipe I have included to mark the memorable ocassion with a colourful , creative cake!

Do you know what why Americans celebrate the 4th of July?
Movies have been made , songs written and sung , poems recited and people have risked their lives for this historic event in America.So I decided to find out why this day was and is important for Americans.
How would you feel if someone older than you ,like an older brother or sister kept telling you what and how to do things,then kept asking for more and more money,kinda like taking your allowance and not letting you decide rules for yourself.
It would make me pretty mad after a while , and thats exactly how the the colonist felt up until 1776.
Great Britain was like an older brother and kept trying to make the rules, and wanting more tax money. The people who had moved to this new land to start fresh were working very hard to make new homes and build places ,it is never easy starting out from scratch.
Eventually they got mad at the leaders of Great Britain ,because they wanted to make some new rules for their new land, decide for themselves who would be in charge and how to spend their own money. This is called 'Independance'. Some of the men got together and decided they needed to discuss how to get their freedom ,not just for a little while but for all future generations. Their new homeland was called America, so they were called Americans.
Thomas Jefferson was one of the men in this group ,and he wrote all of their ideas down .This was called the first draft. A few changes were made later, and once they all agreed on how they wanted America to be the paper was called The Declaration Of Independance' The leaders of the new land, met and signed this document in a place called Pennsylvania,USA
Why Does America Celebrate the 4th Of July?
The new Americans wanted to make goals, and rules for future generations to follow so they could keep their Independence.
It was a difficult time and they had to have alot courage, and strength to hold firm ,to what they believed in. Great Britain did not agree with their decision and accused them of treason for turning away from them, some risked being hanged or punished for wanting Independance.
Now you know why Amercians remember and celebrate their Freedom and Independance.
So Its Time To Celebrate this 4th of July,and what better way than to do it with a party!!!
To make this Freedom day ,even more memorable ,why not invite a homeless person back to your place for the day!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!!- I BAKED A CAKE FOR YOU!!
Easy No Bake 4th Of July Flag Cake..
- 8ozs cream cheese
- 4ozs plain yoghurt
- 4ozs ricotta cheese
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla
1 zest of a lemon
Mix all ingredientsa in a food processor, spread in a pan or suitable serving platter (9" x13")
Decorate with blueberries for stars,raspberries or strawberries for stripes. Chill.

Good hub and a nice setup for the recipe...which sounds real good too. I love my country and I celebrate the 4th every year with a BBQ and fireworks and then I read things like this hub that make me ponder on why we celebrate. Is it a guise like most of our other holidays to make money for big corporations? Don't really know. I do know that our fight for independece was to win control over the issuance of money. Great Britain had control of the money. Who has control over our money now? Did we fight for independence just to become dependent on our own central banking system... I know, it's a little deep for a recipe hub, but it is food for thought.
Thankyou so much for your input Shark. I am learning as a foreigner , so wrote it more of an light introductory account, each bite I take of early American history gives me a greater appreciation and I guess Im a slow eater ( takes time to grow in wisdom) lol.

One of my sons back home in ( NZ) initated a family discussion on Independance Day ,so I got to thinking maybe their are other immigrants like me who need to read a few basics first. livewithrichard, yes it is food for thought indeed and relevant points you make. Difficult to know all the why's ,but one things for sure , those early leaders had strength of character and Im sure that same blood ( if not determination) will see good men uphold ,and give strength to the same values again.
There was a lot going on during that time. England was in tough financial straights. What Americans know as the French and Indian War was really just one theater of a war that was faught in Europe for many years. It could be considered the real First World War. The war ended and England was left almost broke. They felt justified in demanding more financial support considering the money they spent protecting the colonies.
There was work being done to reach an agreement on representation but talks broke down.
Our founding fathers were men of great courage. Signing the document painted a large target on their backs.

England seems to have been involved in other similar scenerios too ,Scotland ,Wales , Australia , New Zealand etc. I admit I am naive when it comes to Politics , but on the face of it just seems unfair to keep making demands ( taxes etc) like they did, of course Im sure depending on which side of the history aisle you look ,facts will vary slightly.
Eagle, America had been a collection of British colonies for over 170 years. The Tea Tax was simply the last straw for colonists being bled dry by the Crown. The wonder is we didn't declare independence sooner, seeing how the Pilgrims had come here in 1620 to be independent of the Church of England!
Hey J , the more I read the more fascinating it becomes ,although not surprising either!!. Conquering nations such as GB in that time period ,I was aware of in the Pacific ,though its only in the last 30 yrs that history books have been revamped to include ALL the facts so to speak. Good hub, takes me back to the text book days of History class. I live in the thick of Revolutionary War territory in MA, so I'm familiar with all of this. Of course, nowadays is more about fireworks than patriotism, but it's a fun day nonetheless.
Thankyou for commenting Kiwi..I know its written simply ,but that's how I best digest history (sorry) thing is I was talking to this lady from Mexico and I got to asking her questions , turned out that I knew more than her ,and that made me think( gosh) well there are hundreds and hundreds of immigrants from all over the world here in the USA , maybe , they can learn with me. ( plus I knew you guys would add more) grins.......its neat finding out things along the way too ,like who designed the flag , who sewed the flag etc.

I think you did a good job of briefly covering this subject. I like to think of Independence Day as a day that we remember (rather than celebrate) what it is to be under a totalitarian rule :)

It's always good to see mention of the principles of on which the nation was founded, because these days it seems as if a lot of people (Americans) have become oblivious to those principles. A great book/DVD for anyone interested in how things went on is David McCullough's "John Adams".
I've grown up/lived in the area around Boston and Lexington/Concord, and it's kind of nice to have access to things like Old North Church (where people gathered to discuss their plans) and Paul Revere's house. The fact that these places still stand is a reminder that it was really all that long ago (in the "scheme of life").

I think being educated on where you live ,work , and lay your head to sleep each night is a good thing to do,(for anyone) least I think so, even my son who is University back in New Zealand did not know a couple if things related to this significant part in America's history,of course he added mum America also makes the best cake!! Eagle, this is a great first start for you on your American journey. Simple to digest for those who don't know. But the story is much more and you know that I am sure. I have many ancestors that were involved in that fight for Independence, all either former or decendents of Highlanders. Some of my ancestors were even with the British fighting against their brethren here in the colonies.

American businessmen realised they could make a lot more money trading with the rest of world, rather than merely trading with Britain. Business men still rule the country of course, The idealists were only front men, then and now.

I live on a military installation with my husband, so as you can imagine the 4th of July is a really big thing around here. In fact, it's one of my favorite holidays.
Even though the 4th is over I may still try that cake out and share with my hubbys unit. I'll let you know how it goes over. :)

This was my 1st, 4th of July and we got invited to a small church gathering ,followed by a b-b-q and my fav ,cheeseburgers!!,but I was amazed with this hamburger designed cake too ,so creative ...just had to try that ,actually wasnt sure with the first slice (j/k) so had me another hahaha....then one of the ladies gave me this candle decorated so I woulkd remember my first 4th July....awwww....wasnt expecting that , so sweet to do that, was all teary eyed.

great topic and good work writing it. One of the poblems the early Amereicans faced was taxation without representation. They had taxes on tea being levied on them to support Great Britan, but had no vote on these taxes. This was why on a cold night in December a goup of men climbed aboard ther Beaver II in Boston harbor and threw the tea chests over board. The event became known as the Boston Tea Party. The Colonists refused to buy the King's tea and started protesting by purchasing coffee. It is why Coffee is the beverage of choice to this day in America.
The Founding Faters were men of courage, it didn't mean they were not afraid of what would happen to them and their families if they were not successful in their cause, but despite their fears they did what they knew and believed was the right thing to do.
It was why upon gaining liberation from Britan that they formed a Represntitive form of government.
It is unfortuante, but most of these lessons are lost in government run schools today. Civics is not even a required course, and US history is not taught in most schools until high school. Even then it is more of a social studies class than it is history. The first grade I had US history in was grade 4, then again in grade 6 and again in HS. I ask young people just simple questions about US history and I just get a blank stare.
Sad, but is one of the reasons we find ourselves in the mess that we are in today.
