Ovarian Cyst
Ovarian Cyst

Ovarian Cyst is a fibrous and abnormal formations of the tissues in the shape of a bag, filled with pasty content. One gynecologist estimates 20% of women will get benign tumors, or cyst, on the ovaries during their reproductive years. For women under 30, the tumors usually go away by themselves.

Why does women developed ovarian cyst? During the menstrual cycle, the ovary undergoes enormous changes in preparation for the release of an egg, which literally has to break out of its casing in order to travel down the Fallopian tube. If the ovary fails to function properly in this process, a cyst may form. Many cyst are normal, these normal cysts are called functional cysts, whichoccur as a result of ovulation. This kind of cysts normally shrink over time, usually in about 1 to 3 months. If you have a functional cyst, you need your doctor to check your cyst again in 1 to 3 months to make sure the cyst has gotten smaller.

How is ovarian cysts being treated? Your doctor will first do a manual exam. If the cyst is small, she or he will probably ask to see you again in a month and may prescribe oral contraceptives, so you will not ovulate, if you don't ovulate you won't form cysts. If the cyst is larger or fixed to surrounding tissue, the doctor will probably have to use ultrasound (technique that uses sound waves to create an image of the internal organs) in order to see it better. In more severe cases, an exploratory laparoscopy (a tube inserted through an abdominal incision) may be necessary to evaluate whether surgery is indicated.

Symptoms:

  • Delay of menstrual period even though you are sure you are not pregnant.
  • Feeling of discomfort similar to menstrual cramps (sometimes, if the cyst twists on itself or ruptures, the pain can be more severe).
  • Mid-cycle bleeding or an unusually heavy menstrual flow.

Unfortunately you have one 'fact' in here that is actually incorrect-- You say that when a gynecologist "prescribes oral contraceptives, so you will not ovulate, if you don't ovulate you won't form cysts"-- is not the case when a cyst forms because a too much estrogen feeding an already present growth from birth. Some women are born with these and throughout life must keep an eye on them, it is a precursor on their DNA that makes their estrogen dominant systems be a pleasant environment for one to form. If a birth control method is prescribed for a condition of painful cramps and irregular cycles, a synthetic hormone WILL not necessarily make it better, or reverse the condition, it can make it worse.
