Why Dory is My Official Network Marketing Mascot
60The Lighter Side of Serious Stuff
You know, building a business takes a lot of work, effort, time, etc. I don't know about you, but for me it's so easy to take myself ~ or whatever project I'm working on ~ waaay too seriously. So, for all you home-business folk out there, sit back in your chair, take a deep breath, and lighten up for a few minutes!
First, take a peek at the short video below. Then come back and continue ~ I'll wait....
Did ya' get it? No? Well then, let me explain. For those of you who haven't seen this wonderful movie, "Finding Nemo" revolves around Melvin, a clown fish, and his son Nemo. Nemo has been "kidnapped" by humans and finds himself in a dentist's aquarium. Melvin sets out to find him and along the journey is joined by Dory, a blue tang. Despite a certain degree of "air-headedness", it is Dory's assistance and persistence that enables Melvin and Nemo to be reunited.
What makes Dory special?
Silly as it may sound, Dory has 4 qualities that embody the concept of attraction marketing, and that I hope to display in my own business.
1) She cared about others - While the old school of sales may encourage you to deliver your pitch to anyone and everyone, everything I'm learning about this new school has to do with being genuinely concerned for others, taking the time to learn their needs, and then offering content that will help them. People buy from people they trust and are drawn to, and who isn't drawn to someone who displays true interest about them?
2) She ventured into unfamiliar waters - When things looked difficult or scary, Dory kept sight of her friend and their mission, and plunged ahead. I went into business to benefit my family and to bring value to those around me. If I can keep those goals and ideals in mind, it enables me to "just keep swimming"!
3) She wasn't afraid to network - OK, so I know there are some of you out there who are just born to sell. I, however, am not one of them! There's a certain amount of hesitancy and trepidation involved when I approach people I don't know. Dory's innocence and determination, however, coupled with her desire to help her friend, allowed her to communicate with strangers, and encouraged them to give her the information and help she needed. Do I need to spell out how that can apply to your own business?
4) She kept plugging away - "Just keep swimming...just keep swimming..." Now, hamsters on a treadmill keep plugging away as well; but they don't get anywhere! Dory, however, followed her gut, listened to counsel and moved ahead ~ even when it was dark around her. I'm learning that as long as I'm learning something each day ~ and finding a way to apply it to my business ~ I'm continuing to swim as well!
So, there you have it ~ my mascot is Dory! And if you're ever around me during the day, you'll understand why I sometimes may be found muttering (mostly to myself...) "just keep swimming, just keep swimming..."
