Ever since they appeared on the scene in the seventies, electronic sewing machines have made a huge difference in the lives of men and women who are interested in sewing.

Electronic machines soon dominated the market as a device that could make a person's life a great deal more simple. Not only did they have a great deal of the functionality of the mechanical sewing machine, they could create stitches that were a great deal more unique and creative.

By taking a look at the electronic sewing machines and what could be done with them, we can see how far sewing technology has come in just the last half century.

How It All Started With Singer

One of the names that is closely linked with sewing machines in general and electronic sewing machines in particular is the name Singer. If you sew today, there is a good chance that you will recognize this name as being the brand of your sewing machine or as the label on a great many of your sewing supplies.

One thing that might interest you is the fact that Isaac Singer, the founder of the brand, did not invent a sewing machine, nor did he add some sort of brilliant new innovation to it.

As a matter of fact, he was an actor! Instead, what Singer did was popularize the image of the sewing machine for home use, and in particular for the use of women.

At the turn of the century, machines in general were thought to be far beyond the capabilities of the gently-bred lady to handle. While this was an attitude that should have been ridiculous in light of the many impoverished women who were working in the factories, the fact remained that the general opinion was that machines were something that a woman had no place with.

Singer popularized the sewing machine as an essential part of the home and he overcame a great many different prejudices regarding machines and women in general.

It was Singer that came out with the world's first electronic sewing machine in 1975. This machine was called the Athena 2000, named after the Greek goddess of war and handicrafts, and today, if you search closely enough, you can still see that people are still using this powerful machine.

This is no surprise to people who are still using mechanical machines that are more than eighty years old; Singer sewing machines can be remarkably resilient and stand up quite well to the test of time if they are simply maintained appropriately.

Why Choose An Electronic Sewing Machine?

The genius of the electronic sewing machine is that it does not create a push and pull method when it comes to creating stitches and patterns. Instead, an electrical impulse is used to shoot the needle and then return it to its place.

This allows the feeding mechanism and the needle to work jointly to create patterns, and the result is often patterning and stitching which is more impressively intricate than anything that was done before using a machine, and with additional precision to boot.

When you are looking at purchasing an electronic sewing machine, what advantages can you see over a mechanical machine?

The first advantage that you will notice is of course, the precision. You'll find that the tension is a great deal easier to maintain and that the stitch size is also a great deal simpler.

Take some time to think about what you want to sew and what sort of work you want to put into it. If you are looking for something that will allow you to do a great deal of decorative work, an electronic machine with its many different stitch abilities will be what you want.

You'll also find that doing buttonholes and other finicky finishing work on an electronic sewing machine is a great deal simpler.

Electronic or Computerized?

Though Singer came out with the first computerized sewing machine just a few short years after they invented the electronic machine, electronic machines are still quite prevalent on the scene.

Whether you buy yours brand new from the dealer or you have decided to see what you can do with an older refurbished machine, you'll find that there are many different projects that you can whip out with these electronic marvels.
