Why Hypnosis does not work.

This is some thing that I do hear from time to time. I am a hypnotist so when people hear this someone will always come up to me and say it.

I usually smile politely and ask them what they do for a living and what study and training they have in hypnosis?

You have probity guessed the answer to my second question. They have no knowledge or experience let alone practice in these arts. People are wonderful.

Most have an opinion based on what? Ignorance.

Do you know what hypnosis is? Even therapists who use it every day are often unsure.

Due to the makeup of our brains and our subconscious minds we usually spend most of our life in one form of trance or another.

It is just a state that we have entered or we have allowed someone else to influence us to go in to.

As a therapist one of the things that I do is get people out of their every day trances, allow them to understand how they do this and teach them how to change the trances they have been in.

Let me give you two examples, if I may.

I call them the “nutter” trance 1 and 2, technical terms in the trade. Play along and you will know more about how hypnosis and self suggestion works in the real world than most qualified hypnotists.

Why Hypnosis does not work. The Nutter Trance. Part 1

Have you ever been at home alone and may be decided that you wanted a cup of tea?

How did you know you wanted it?

Many clients at their consultations when I run this say “ I just thought I wanted one so I went and made it” they listened to a voice in their head say it, so they did it. Ok I can go along with that, They did what a voice that no one else can hear told them to do. Sounds like a trance to me or a nutter.

Can you imagine how any one who listens to these voices would feel if they said your life is no good or something else negative. What if all the voices in their head said powerful lovely things that encouraged you.

Why Hypnosis does not work. The Nutter Trance. Part 2.

Lets go in to the kitchen again.

I ask people “ have you ever been in the kitchen may be making a cup of tea, yet in your head you are running an argument with someone”?

Do you get really angry feelings in your body?

Usually they say “yes”

Cool.

So on your own, with no one else around you are able to get your self worked up and angry.

Out of interest when you are arguing with the person, who is not there. Do you hear the argument in your head, and see them.

They usually reply “yes”

I then politely point out that they have been able to do the following.

  • Change their state.
  • Produce real feelings with no external input.
  • Create auditory hulanations.
  • Produce visual hulanations.
  • They were also able to interact with the fantasies they had created.
  • All done while they were wide awake.

Sounds like a trance to me.

They usually get the idea at this point as I trust you have.

In order to experience deep hypnotic trance and interact with your own hypnotic world you do not have to be relaxed, in a trance you do it any way.

I suppose hypnosis does not work.

Good question mae.

It depends on who you ask and what their experance is.

As a ypnotist lookng at all the trances people are in every day.

It seams to be how we exist .

Did you mean hallucinations?

Paul Hastings  says:

Yes a lot of the time people are making things up, in their own minds and then living as if what they make up is true.

Thank you.

To me it is apparent that as we do these things.

Why not go in to the kitchen and have an have self induced fantasy say “ high gorgeous”

Or re-run a time when someone said to me “ you are the most amazing person I have ever been privileged to know”

We seam to move through reality pretending things are real and then living as if what we made up is true. Might as well have some fun out of it.

Hi Paul,

wise words. Reminds me of a common strategy by many people (I'll take the risk of being called a sexist, but: particularly women!). You make them a compliment and they angrily reply: "You just said that to make me feel good!" (Well, even if it's true, then that's a sign that somebody cares about you enough to make you feel good, and that in and of itself should make you feel good).

I think we should handle good feelings the way the US government is currently handling the dollar: just make more of it.

I love the Random Acts Of Kindness idea. And it's not limited to do random acts of kindness unto others - we can always be kind to ourselves. Just as you suggested, Paul.

High five,

Bob

I think the people who say that hypnosis doesn't work are the ones who are really in a deep trance! The "I-can-not-be-hypnotized-trance".

I'm glad to see you use EFT in your practice as well. This is something I've introduced in the last few months in my hypnosis practice as well.

I always use EFT at the initial consultation as it quickly allows me to show a client how quickly they can turn off or reduce some glitch in their life, sort of a convincer.

It is also part of their daily drills they do at home, so that they can take responsibility for the changes they will be making. For many things it is faster however not always and in these times of financial difficulties it allows people to still get good results.

Remember that much of EFT involves hypnosis and NLP I have found that the best emotional freedom therapists are also good hypnotists and neuro-linguistic programmers.

Sorry guys - but I believe it is possible that you are all biased because you want to believe it works on everyone. Blaming the client for not getting results is silly. If you want to get at the truth you have to understand that the client does'nt care if they are in a trance or not all they care about is if they had a shift. So what if people are in trances. Just because you are in a trance does'nt mean you can reprogram your subconscious - for some it does but for others it doesn't!!!!! I have been a mediatator for over 15 years. I can sit still without moving for over 2 hours. I have read books on NLP and hypnotism. I have used EFT. I have made my own subliminal tapes. I have experimented with photic, binaural and isotonic entrainment. I have not been able to reprogram my subconscious. There are more mysteries to this science yet to be revealed - why not own up that you don't know everything about everyone. Some people are different when it comes to reprogramming the subconscious - yes they can go into a trance but not a trance that allows reprogramming. Lets research why - lets do the studies and make them publicly available - so far its all hearsay and subjective opinion from those in the trade. Just as a finisher - I aim to learn how to reprogram myself - hypnosis has not worked for me even though I am able to go into a deep trance by myself. I also practice out of body experiences and lucid dreams. I have managed these feats - but it takes alot of effort and they eventually tend to happen randomly. Until it works easily everytime on everyone...only then will you have all the answers to this science. You don't know why it does not work for everyone so just admit and stop blaming the client. Do the research - you waste true seekers time with your false leads!! Sorry guys!

Wicked article mate. There are too many misconceptions about hypnosis in the world.

Reality Corrodes, trance makes it easier to do lucid dreaming and meditation, however just being in trance isn't the only requirement for programming. Have you looked at 'Core Beliefs' and 'Meta Programs' in your search? You may experience deep changes once you begin reading in those areas.

Thanks alexed181.

You are right core beliefs and meta programs can come in to it as well.

Thanks for this great article, Paul!

I have been doing some research on hypnosis, so I wanted to respond to Reality Corrodes' comment:

"Lets research why - lets do the studies and make them publicly available - so far its all hearsay and subjective opinion from those in the trade."

That research is being done. Just go the PubMed (http://pubmed.gov) and search for "hypnosis". You will come up with over 11,000 results, many of them detailing double-blind, peer-reviewed hypnosis research.

Hope this helps!
