Why I Love Oregon
63The Best Place On Earth
I was born on the Oregon Coast and I have lived in Oregon for my entire life except for two years in Phoenix, Arizona. The desert is nice but nothing matches the Oregon Coast for beauty. And if I want to visit a desert the Oregon High Desert is only three hours away.
Oregon has almost every type of landscape there is except for swamps which is fine with me because I am not fond of snakes.
We live near the central coast which does get a lot of rain but it sure makes things green. After a while you just realize it is going to rain a lot and you get used to it. If you like earth tone green colors you would really love it here. Of course the big attraction is the Pacific Ocean. Pacific means peaceful but when Lewis and Clark first reached the ocean they wrote in there diaries there was nothing peaceful about it. We have great storms here and up the beach from us is the US Coast Guard training center for surf rescue. People from all over the world come to learn how to handle boats in waves bigger than buildings.
November is when we get our biggest storms and thus the biggest waves. We often times get winds with gusts of more than 70 miles as hour. Two years ago we had a storm come ashore about 50 mile North of us which had sustained hurricane force winds. It flattened the trees on thousands of acres of forest land. These storms can be really impressive. In fact, during November the ocean front motels are used booked solid with people coming to veiw the storms right out their front windows.
A great attraction near my home is the Oregon Coast Aquarium. This aquarium housed Keiko for a few years until they tried to move him to Iceland. That didn't work out so well. A new shark exhibit has been installed in his old tank. This exhibit has tubes you walk through as the sharks and other sea life wsim under, around and over you. The kids especially get a big kick out of being so close to the sharks.
Riding On The Massive Oregon Dunes
One of our hobbies is riding quads on the Oregon Coast Dunes. There is a section of the dunes that is set aside for ATV riding that does not harm the rest of the ecosystem. The dunes are about an hour and a half away from our house so we only go on the weekends. The picture above is of my youngest daughter catching air over a sand berm.

Basalt Cliffs of Oregon
One of the most fascinating places on the Oregon Coast is the cliffs found at Cape Perpetua south of Yachats. These cliffs were an impediemt to any kind of transportation along the coast until the 1930's. During the depression the federal government paid to complete a highway from Astoria at the mouth of the Columbia River which is the norther border, to the California border over 300 miles away.
This project put thousands of unemployed Oregon men to work and helped bring the area out of the depression. Part of the project was finding away around or through this headland. It was done by blasting out a road bed from the face of the cliffs and by tunneling through one particularly tall headland jutting out to the ocean. Now when you drive along the roadway you are literally feet from the edge which is a drop off hundreds of feet to the Ocean crashing on the rocks below.

Fascinating, as I don't know much about Oregon, coming from the bottom of the world myself, :-) The beaches look awesome!
I agree - I have to live near the sea - the desert is dramatic and impressive and I like mountains too - but there has to be sea! I don't know oregon well but did live in Vancouver for a year - loved Vancouver Island too. I think you'd like New Zealand we have a lot of coast and wild weather
I recently moved to Oregon from northern California. Haven't had the time to explore too much, but the coast is beautiful.
@Lissie, We were almost neighbors. LOL. I ike Vancouver Island also it still seems kind of wild and the scenery from the ferries is spectacular.
@Lafenty, Welcome to Oregon. If you get a chance go to Newport and visit the aquarium. It is really great, even Keiko lived there for a while.
How I Got To Hubpages
I have never really been one to toot my own horn so to speak. I would never have thought about writing on the internet about myself, where I live, or what I do. So why do I have this blog you ask. I have been publishing content on line for about six months now. I have a web site about online business opportunities and the key to success for a website is visitors. I thought all you had to do was put up a website and the internet surfers would be drawn to my site and I would make money. Wrong.
The only way to get visitors is to get your name out on the web and write things for people to read. If they like what they read you will get visitors to read more. So internet marketing is really all about writing as much as possible so you get more credit. The thing is I found I really like to write. I always thought I would enjoy it but I rarely had anything to write about. Now I find I can write about all kinds of things and it is really fun.
I decided with this hub I would share the Oregon Coast with the world. This is a beautiful place to live, i mean visit. We like visitors but don't be afraid to leave when your vacation is over. We are selfish and don't want to share the great life style we have. One of our governers actually contemplated taking down the Welcome to Oregon signs at the border.
Anyway, hopefully I can share the coast with you and you can learn a little about my neck of the woods.
