Does mind-over-matter and mind-reading really work?
Uri Geller became world famous for his ability to bend spoons by some strange power and later on in his career he also demonstrated that he was able to read minds and fix broken watches by some mysterious force. As well as all this he has demonstrated dowsing ability and psychic powers of prediction.
Many people are keen to believe in Uri but there are also a lot of sceptics with James Randi probably being the most famous of these. These people want to see Uri fail and claim that all the things he does that are believed to be examples of his mystical powers and mind-over-matter are actually just illusions and tricks that a good stage magician can do.
In his public performances it has always been the case that there was an uncertainty that anything strange would happen and he never knew for sure what would take place. But Uri has always made a point of stressing the value of positive thinking and believing in yourself and what you are doing. This is not easy to do in the presence of sceptical people, who want you to fail.
The point is though that anyone who knows about and believes in real magic will know that the intent and keeping your focus on it strongly are what causes the result you desire. Mind-over-matter works best when you believe it will work with no doubt at all it won't work and also with no counter intentions and doubts being thrown in by other people.
This is why children often have better command of powers like this. It is because they haven't as yet been convinced by doubting and debunking adults that these things cannot work and are not real.
I used to play the Monopoly board game with my son Isaac when he was a boy around the age of 11 and often it looked as if he was controlling the score on the dice, where he or I would land on the board and even what cards came up in Community Chest and Chance. I could do this too but not as good as him.
It was like a board game being played as much by mind-over-matter as it was by the luck of the dice. For example, Isaac would work out what dice throw I needed to land on one of his properties with a hotel on it and he would call out "get...(whatever the number was needed to make me land on his property)" and I would end up getting it and have to pay him the rent for landing there. Or he would land on Community Chest or Chance and get one of the "Bank pays you" cards after saying: "Some more money". Or Isaac would say "Go to jail, Dad," and I would have to. But then I would say "I want doubles," and throw them and come out. Then he would say, "Go back in"! And often I would have to.
I remember we once had a Scientologist called Andrew from the Office of Special Affairs staying with us - I was a member of Scientology at that time - and he saw Isaac and me playing like this and was very impressed with our powers. It was far too often to be coincidence. Local kids in the neighbourhood knew my son could do this and called it "Isaac's magic."
Unfortunately he started to have epileptic fits and had to be put on medication to control his seizures and has been on these drugs ever since. He was best at causing mind-over-matter when playing a board game before he had to take the anti-convulsant drugs.
I think because I never told Isaac that he couldn't do these things that he believed he could and that's exactly why he got results.
Recently, in the school I was working at I noticed that often children would be able to guess a number or something else I had chosen in secret straight away. For example, the teacher I was helping, would ask me to pick a number between 1 and 50, and I would choose 33, say, and then the first child from the class to guess what it was would get it right.
Of course, this didn't always happen, and more often than not the children would need many goes to find the number or object I had picked, but the times a child would get it right straight away didn't seem like coincidence or good guesswork to me.
I believe this is mind-reading or telepathy in action. I would suggest again, that children may be better at this because their "psychic senses" have not been dulled or turned off yet by listening to adult opinions that negate such abilities.
It would be very interesting to see how children would grow up if they never had any parent, adult family member, teacher or other grown-up putting negative thoughts in their heads about what is "impossible" and what cannot be done.
We are all brought up in a system that tells us what we cannot do far more than telling us what we can do. Is it any wonder there are so many sceptics and debunkers? Is it any wonder so many people are lacking in confidence?
To stay a child within I think is the key to success with "paranormal" abilities, and would add that it seems very significant that the Bible tells us in Matthew 18:3 that Jesus "said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."

Hi Chris! I once emailed Uri after seeing him on TV and having the feeling that I should and he emailed me back in under 30 minutes! I have been a fan of Uri's since I first saw him on a TV show many years ago when he first became famous. I have an autographed copy of one of his books here!
That would make a great hub, Chris!
Very interesting hub Steve. I have always been interested in the psychic abilities we all have as children, and yes negative conditioning does dilute it out of us. I was very isolated with my kids when they were very small, so before they hit the age of 4 both children had a knack of being able to guess who was on the phone, which picture card i was holding, or they spoke about when "they was old", an allusion to past life memories i suppose. My son especially used to talk of an old lady who he claimed to see around our house with some cats, and he picked out my deceased grandmother from a bunch of photos I had. He had never seen a photo of her before since she passed away several years prior to his birth. Also, he claimed to be able to "see" energy fields around everything, something he did not see once he started going to primary school. I never told my kids that things were impossible and indulged their imagination as much as i could whilst they were very small as many parents do. We also shared a "mind connection" as he would often ask me about things I was thinking about even though I had not mentioned what I was thinking. I have known many children growing up in rural areas who have claimed to see fairies or talk to imaginary friends, and it does seem far more common than in children in towns and cities exposed to modern thinking and all the trappings of modern society. Children who live in their imagination are far more likely to be able to keep hold of their psychic abilities, especially if they are not exposed to TV, media or internet, or the scourge of children today, videogames. What I term "organic kids" ie those who have been allowed to roam free range in the country side, which while they may appear a bit "slower" than city kids, are far more perceptive to people's moods, thoughts and body language, than those of city kids, who seem to have less acute psychic senses dulled by the "white noise" they have to grow up in. I agree that the focus of our society does seem to centre on negative conditioning right from an early age, and is a major cause of many mental illnesses like depression. What you focus on does seem to materialise whether its is positive or negative. Many people focus on the negative brought about by fear or lack of understanding. I saw Uri at Exeter Football Ground some years ago, when he made an appearance with his friend Michael Jackson, and he seemed to manage to clear the clouds away directly above the ground, on what was a miserable day, by getting all the Michael Jackson fans to focus their thoughts on shifting the clouds and allowing the sun to shine through. It could have been coincidence, but it seemed like a small hole in the clouds appeared within minutes of asking, directly above the football ground, letting bright sunshine through for 20 minutes, while the rest of Exeter was shrouded in overcast drizzle!
I agree with all you said there, Lou, and your memory of Uri getting some sunny weather made me remember when I did the same at a festival in the Kymin in Penarth about 10 years back. I was compere and John Otway was headlining. It had started to rain and I asked the audience to do a "reverse rain dance" to try and get the sunshine back. Nobody did so I said well, it looks like I'll have to do it myself and I jumped of the stage and was dancing around, and amazingly the rain stopped!
Fantastic! I would love to have seen that! lol! I must say that positive visualisation it also works very well with parking spaces too! whenever I really really need a parking space, especially one near where i need to be, I mentally ask for one and focus intently on it, and lo and behold! one appears, usually in exactly the right place i need one, without having to drive around for ages looking for one! Now if I can get that same principle to work with finding a bag containing a great wad of cash I'll be laughing...!
Hi Bard
The story i read about Uri Geller was that Andrija Puharich, a doctor, was studying psychics, and found that people's disbelief was a hindrance in allowing the psychics to demonstrate his or her powers. So he formed a theory that if the psychic could do a magic trick in front of an audience first and claim it was paranormal, then that would overcome the audience’s disbelief and allow psychic ability to be demonstrated.
He then looked around to find a stage magician who was willing to do this and managed to find Uri Geller who was at the time a magician. And this is what Uri Geller does, he starts off with a magic trick, to ‘prime the pump’ and then when he has the audience believing in him, he then can use his psychic abilities. It is a very high risk strategy because if his trickery is found out at the beginning and the audience still remains sceptical, then, he cannot demonstrate any psychic abilities and can only carry on as a stage magician. What I find incredible about Uri Geller is that he has been exposed publicly as a fraud, both on Israeli and USA TV shows, but still has the self belief to carry on regardless. I think what he has going for him, is that he has managed to train his mind, so he has total control over what he chooses to think and can block out any negative thoughts he might have.
When I was involved in the occult and witchcraft I did meet people who could actually read other people’s minds. All the rituals and dramatic ceremonies that surround the occult, I suppose do a similar thing to Uri Geller’s magic tricks. The rituals are designed to take us away from ‘normality’ so we are open to different possibilities. So in these settings, things become possible, like mind reading, that would not be possible in a the ‘normal’ world.
Yes, I know about Puharich's involvement but didn't know what you have said, William! I can see a logic in doing that. Uri doesn't care about all the sceptics anyway because as he says on his site the more they argue against him the more publicity he gets and the better he does in other ways! He has had a large part of his publicity machine thanks to all the debunkers!
Bard - Uri Geller will always be a controversial individual. Personally, I don't see the harm in what he does. He doesn't claim to be a prophet and he isn't trying to change the world. I'm not sure what he does - whether it's a paranormal ability, stage magic - or if its really the power of his mind.
He's always been an interesting man, one that I've both read about and watched over the years. And I've never understood the skeptics inner drive to expose such people. For what purpose?
I'm a happy fence sitter in many things. Not, as some would believe, because I can't form opinions of my own or because I don't have the courage of my convictions. It's simply because I don't believe I'm here to judge. I like the diversity that we live among. I love that we are all unique. Who am I to sit in judgement in how others do or do not conduct their lives?
I know of one or two people that are very strong, mentally. Their self-belief is the core of who they are. And - they're wonderful people. Uri Geller is just a public example of such people. He lives a good life, in as much as he's clearly not harming the world or those around him. Therefore - what's the problem?
I enjoyed your perspective Bard :)
Thank you, frogdropping! As you have probably gathered I am a fan of Uri Geller's and respect him for the reasons you give, because I believe these things are possible and also because of his views on animals. I think some of the debunkers are just jealous of his success.
I am with you on this subject. Our mind is a very powerful machine and the corruption of life holds the power to stifle the strength within it. I believe and have been a Uri fan since the first time I saw him on TV...seems so long ago, ugh!
I am glad to hear you agree, CS!
I also believe in mind power and the power of positive thinking.Positive thinking is much much stronger than negative thinking and surely it has some power on matter ,yet we don't know how to develop this power.someone might have in their brain kind of special control centers or frequency generators which really can communicate with matter and govern its state.Maybe in our case that part of the brain is under developed.
I am glad you believe in it too! Thanks for posting!
"This is why children often have better command of powers like this. It is because they haven't as yet been convinced by doubting and debunking adults that these things cannot work and are not real."
Oh so true! Sugar Pills prove that it's all mind over matter.
Yes, that's what I think too, lxxy!
I do not want Geller to fail ... But am of the considered opinion, 'What Uri does, by way of applied Telekinesis and Telepathy, is in his Exercising the Lower Animal "Instincts" ... An ability though present, but not Exercised consciously by the higher humans.
I say so on the basis of my Experimenting, for the sake of understanding the Animal Abilities of Human Mind ... by applying the latent powers of Telekinesis and Telepathy in controlled experimentation.
The Mind, is a totally different ball game, for it transcends both the Physical and the Ideal states of Human Awareness. Therefore, I suggest, the correct Title of your Hub (and Geller's book ... if it is so) should be
"Exercising the Human Will over Matter>"
Regards.
Thank you for your feedback, Shahdid!

Both telepathy and precognition have been proved by scientific experiment. I'll get the references and write a hub on the subject at some point. But I don't trust Uri Geller though. I think he's just a show biz act hiding behind a paranormal front.
