Owning horses

My first horse
I’ve wanted a horse for as long as I can remember. My first memory was John F. Kennedy’s funeral. That happened when my family lived in Georgia. I was 2, but I remember seeing these beautiful white horses pulling what looked to me like a wagon. I pestered my mother so much that she told me should would buy me a horse when I turned 16. When I turned 16, she said that since we didn't have a place to keep a horse, she would buy me a car upon graduation from high school instead. When I graduated high school, she said she wanted to be sure I went to college and that she would get me a car after two years of college. She gave me the Volkswagen Beetle that had sat undriven on the side of the house for years. I had to fumigate it, make an ignition key and put it in the shop to get it running. Still, she kept part of her promise.
Even though I never got the horse my mother promised, owning a horse has never been far from my heart, even though I was a city girl. In 2003, after one-too-many times of bouncing around uncontrollably on a trail horse that decided to catch up with the other horses on the trail, I decided that I needed to learn how to ride properly. After a few months of lessons, I decided I needed my own horse so that I could practice and ride whenever I wanted. When I bought my first horse, I couldn’t wait to call my mother.

Frankly, I didn't either, until I bought my first horse. In my next hub, I'll tell you about some of the comments I got after telling people I bought one.
The ideal of groomimg a horse, feeding, and riding it are great feelings. I would love to have a horse or two ... just don't have the time and or land. Hopefully I'll make it to your neck of the woods for a ride.
I have always liked horses but never considered having my own. The past couple of weeks my neighbor's have been in my yard and I am appalled at the lack of care they are getting. So now I am considering taking them in if he will allow me but I am trying to learn more about them in the process.
Erick, you should be commended for your willingness to take on this responsibility. Know that it is a big responsibility, but it's well-worth the time and effort, and if you do it right, you get to ride.
Please check out my next post in the next couple of days, which will provide more details on getting that first horse.
Thanks for the encouragement. I found out the gentleman is elderly and can no longer physically take care of them. His kids help but they do not have the time.
We are negotiating price now on not only his horses but his land they are on as well. Not that I needed the land really, I had more than him anyway.
Wish me luck!!
And please keep the horse instruction hubs coming since I still have so much I need to learn.

Interesting, especially since there are only few black folks that I know own horses. To tell you the truth I only know one which is you (smile).
