It Must Be A Nocturnal Character Trait
When I was a very small child I had a terrible fear of the dark. My imagination could turn the silhouette of almost anything into the monster that was sure going to consume me the instant I closed my eyes. I distinctly remember crying one night, when I was about 4 years old, because I was sure that the boogieman was waiting inside my clothes closet. My Mother had to turn on a light and try to reason with me that, all I was seeing was the outline of my dresses hanging on the closet pole. She tried to show me that in the darkness, what I was viewing was the silhouette of a dress, but I would not buy into her story. She was getting annoyed and told me if I would close my eyes I would not be able to see the monster, In other words, "shut up and go to sleep".
Looking back, this was probably the beginning of my desire to keep my eyes open through the night. I was positive at the time that Mother was a part of this conspiracy and was somehow possessed by the evil monster. Together they were in cahoots to steal my very soul, as I lay sleeping, with my eyes closed, as ordered by my very own Mother. The fact that my brother, who is 18 months older, figured out how to play on my fear of darkness, was also a contributing factor in the equation. He would be sure to sneak up on me and spook me as children love to do. The thing was, I was extremely gullible and this was to his advantage. To this day I do not enjoy horror films or freaky stories and I will give that disdain to my brother's youthful efforts.

The Influence Of The Planets
There came a time and, I am not sure when but, I found myself interested in astrology. I was reading as much about the subject as I could and I realized that this could also have something to do with my nocturnal love affair. I do honestly and naturally love the wee hours of the morning. You see I was born in the sign of LEO and that is where many of the other planets were resting when I made my debut on this Earth. Not only is my sun sign residing in Leo but an additional six planets were lined up there as I made my worldly entrance. It is not uncommon for more than one planet to be located in the same house at birth but, it is unusual to have more than half of the planets in the same house. Leo is the king of the cat family and cats are considered nocturnal creatures, so there I found another explanation for my comfort in the night time hours.
Mom Was Always Trying To Feed Me Vegatables And Fruits Because I Was Always Tired During The Day
I spent a good bit of time with my head down on my desk at school. It caused me a considerable amount of grief from those poor souls who were trying their best pound some sort of education into my sleepy head. I am living proof that you can learn while you are sleeping. Just because my eyes were closed did not mean that I was not giving them my full attention. They did not see it that way but my test scores usually left them dumb founded.
My Mother made us go to bed very early because she was sure that we needed "mucho" hours in the sack. I was climbing out of bed and crawling past my relaxing parents before I started grade-school. I would watch them, from my position on the floor and silently crawl behind our couch when the coast was clear. I could watch TV and listen to their adult conversation without anyone taking notice of my mission.
There were times when I would get cold and return to my bed to retrieve a blanket so that I could be more comfortable in my secret hiding place. This habit went on for some time before I got busted. One morning I woke up behind the couch to the call of my Mother trying to find me when she did not find me in bed. UGH! That might have been the beginning of my understanding of "little white lies", avoiding a good ass whippin was another personality trait I developed at a young age. That would make an entirely different Hub, so I will leave it at that.
Creativity And 3AM
I decided I wanted to be an artist at the age of 7 or so. I did not like the continual battle over who was going to watch what?, on TV every night. My generation was lucky to have one TV and the other kids spent hours arguing their best, to gain channel control. I liked the quiet time I could spend away from them. The best time was the night time. They would settle in front of the tube and I would retreat to a place where I could pursue some sort of creative adventure.
I made a purple dinosaur pinata, with pink polka dots, in my bedroom at the cost of my new carpeting. I thoughtfully stowed all of the materials in my bedroom and while everyone else was sleeping I crafted this pinata from a giant balloon. It was the envy of my Spanish class but Mother was not too happy. I got glue all over my carpeting and my homemade concoction for paper mache' did not want to come clean. Thank you to God that my oldest brother was in the carpet cleaning business.

Facing Your Fears
The darkness creeped me out so I learned to stick a towel along the crack of my door at night. Mom would bid me sweet dreams and, I would wait until all was silent. That is when I would start on my projects. That is also when I started climbing out my bedroom window to face my wildest fears. The window ledge was fine for my first few excursions but in time it was a silent, drop and roll, to the ground and out into the darkness.
I climbed trees and perched where I would not be noticed. You can learn a great deal from hiding, in the dark, in a tree and, observing your neighbors. It was exciting and creepy all in the same package. I have to admit that a few of my night time jaunts left my heart racing until the day light hours. I would regularly ditch my bed for the streets until I was old enough to get a job and go to work. I never got caught escaping the house at night. That lead me to believe that God was watching over me.
Night Work Is Always My Favorite
There is something about the people who are active in the night world that appeals to me. I do much of my shopping in the wee hours of the morning to this day. My friends call me crazy and I am constantly being warned of the evils that take place in the after-hour. I continue my night work and try to make the most of it whenever it befits my schedule. The one thing I know for sure is that experiencing the night and all that it encompasses leads me to understand and respect the day light for all it is worth.
My creative self always seems to shine the brightest at 3AM, I call this the "witching hour". I would go to bed at 11AM and get up at 5Pm everyday if I could. I would be able to fish during the best times, early morning and late evening. I would be able to work at my crafts, writing and drawing, woodburning and designing and the "witching hour" would be my creative best time. The darkness is so quiet and still I think it opens a door between me and God. There I have no fear.

Well I thank you for your response and kind consideration Rhym O'Reison. It is good to make a connection. C.S.
HI C.S. I am glad I stumbled on your hub. I truly enjoyed reading it. :) I was grinning at the little girl and was touched when I read the last words..."The darkness is so quiet and still I think it opens a door between me and God. There I have no fear." It reminds me of my childhood, when in the dark, I would whisper to GOd to hold my hand. Well, he still does. Thank you for this. :)
Very interesting always love your hubs! :)
C.S.Alexis: What a great response to my REQUEST for "what's your favorite time of day and why?" Very comprehensive and unusual and full. Thanks so much. Creativita (a.k.a. Helen Borel)
ripplemaker,
your comment makes writing worth my while. I am lucky you were stumbling. Thank you for reading where you landed. C.S.
Cup of Joe,
you are always welcome here.Thanx C.S.
Creativita,
This was fun to write and I am delighted that you found it fulfilling to your request. Stop by and visit again soon. I am thinking to change up some of my topics because of this request. Thank you. C.S.
Very interesting hub. Isn't it great how every person is "wired" just a little different. God knew what He was doing when He made us. I'm not sure what my best time of day is, but after reading this, I'll begin to pay more attention. Fun hub as usual.
I typically wake anywhere between 3 and 4am - on my own! It's quiet. The neighborhood is still asleep. Creativity flows.
at that time i'm yawning and cursing the clock thinking why my lord, however, it's normally cuz I only went to sleep 3 hours before. LOL still, I awake and after 5 minutes of stretching and coming alive...I'm ready to face the day with a dazzling smile. Oh yeah, baby, that's me.
CS I loved this information and how your early life affects you now. I, too creep in the night -- with the other "creep-ers?" Now, I will know there are others awake and I am not alone..
Learning while your eyes closed brings back many memories of me in college at 37. I had 3 jobs and foster kids and was going thru an adoption ordeal that shudda made TV -- it was successful but heartbreaking madness at the time too.
I had great grades and looked sleepy all the time. We women, hear us R O A R.
Rob,
Yes, and I like the change up in our wiring; makes life so interesting, Thank you for commenting. C.S.
Constant Walker,
It seems I read something about our liver doing something during this 3-4am time period several years ago but I can not recall it and have not researched it. I wanted to for this hub but so busy. Maybe somebody out there in the medical field has the answer???? You understand about the creative stillness! Thanx for sharing. C.S.
marisuewrites,
your comment tickled me. ROAR MISSY! See some people could save half of their lives by learning and sleeping at the same time. I know many woman who have done the same. We seriously need to rethink our educational system.
God bless you for taking in those children too! C.S.
Maybe it's because it's silent then and there's only you!
Louie,
I really think it is when I am experiencing the closest contact with spirits in another realm of being, thus making me in company with many. Please don't tell anyone as some may consider that grounds for the loony bin. The silence is a path. Just my thoughts! Thanks for reading here. C.S.
Thanks for a very interesting and open loook at your life.
jedgrey,
Thank you for taking time to read here.C.S.
Thanks
I aree, I love the quiet time too.
First Eagle, Thor Einar
I feel more creative during the late night hours also, especially when I get home from working late. I really enjoyed reading your story.
SweetiePie, I do really believe there is something to the energy level and spirituality at this time. Look how many people have agreed with the time and creativity here on these comments. Thank you for reading, C.S.
I find it interesting that as a child you were afraid of the dark, yet you would venture out into the dark world by yourself. That to me is scary LOL,,
Did it ever quiet your fears about bogeymen?
No Trish,
as I knew all along bogeymen are real, some of them are people you know, some are strangers but all the world knows how ugly it can be, in the daylight, even!
Seven planets in Leo the time I was born, you know they say, curiosity killed the cat! I was just LUCKY, always have been. Thanks for stopping in.
Hmmm, never considered that some of them are people. In that category I'd have to put my childhood doctor and dentist. They scared me to death :)
Not that I am a paranoid one, I just see that there is evil lurking amongst us. Just never know who you know.
Great Hub, C.S.
It is much easier to be creative at night. Everything is quiet, and the alcohol has had time to kick in.
Sufidreamer, You have a point as many of my friends like to stray in at the wee hours, as for me well let's just say I smoke too much!
fantastic hub - I'm a night owl too
Understood - my particular poison is Ouzo. Helps to unlock the mental processes.
I do not know this poison Ouzo, enlighten me!
It is a particularly evil Greek spirit - mix with a little water and enjoy. One is fine, two is better. After three, the world goes wobbly. All for less than 3 Euros.
Even better, I will be setting up my own still in the autumn, and making lots of extremely evil Raki. Happy Days!
Like to hear you will grow your own! I have been known to harvest my crops in the fall when I was a lot younger. Good Luck with your still and thanks for the education on Evil Spirits!
LOL, ouzo! a Greek liquor. My hubby, who was half Greek and half Irish, used to buy that for special occasions. It definitely is an acquired taste.
Trish - Half Greek and Half Irish - what a great mix!
We are lucky here - we have enough grapes for about 150 litres of wine, then we can distill the grapeskins left over. Nothing is wasted.
Is there any food that man has not managed to make alcohol from?
I had a Hot Buttered Rum last night after reading your comments, it is driving me to drink! LOL
I see we Leo types agree on this time of night - try getting the last name of Lyon and go thru school with that and the nickname Cat Eyes, oh, well, guess it was better than some others names folks endured...
Seriously, I love the night and the moon and it is the most creative time, tho I find 3 PM equally creative. According to the folks in India this is Vata time - between 2 - 6 AM and PM and the best time for what we are talking about. Seems like I was always on Vata time long before I ever read about it.
Validation is wonderful when you are a spiritually connected person because you tend to be out of sync with most people who severed their connection long ago. Guess that's why people like me are Sirens! :) calling humanity back to balance and knowing in the silence of the comforting dark, the dark of infinite knowledge.
Here's a poem I wrote, one of the first ones I put up on hubpages months ago, just about what you are describing here in your hub, you may get a charge out of it as the woman is a moon and night person: http://hubpages.com/hub/The-Social-Poets
Great hub from you - as always I enjoy your writing!

Great Hub!! I loved your background story and totally understood what you meant about being more creative in the wee hours. It is a difficult concept to explain, but you more than did it justice.
