Why Pornography is Bad for Men - NOT Completely True

By Lady Guinevere

Another hub has this very same name and my comments were deleted. All they want to hear is that PORN is bad for every single man on this earth. This is not true at all.

I commented that such men and couples that have problems with Erectile Dysfuncion need porn. It isn't what the porn is but how the person or man looks at it. Even that is subjective to personal definition.

I mentioned that when a guy goes to the Urologist for such a problem the first thing they are examined for is prostrate problems. Then they are asked to give a sample of semen in a cup--if they can get that. They are asked to get an erection. I guess the lady that wrote that article was too shy to talk about such things, but not shy enough to write about porn.

I also wrote that couples in sex therapy use porn to help their relationship and that was censored as well because they said that sex therapy is another issue. .....BUT it isn't another issue because they stated that all porn is bad for all men-----even the one's in sex therapy? Porn is Porn as to her article.

There be PORN stories in the Bible: http://www.fourmilab.ch/etexts/www/Bible/Song_of_Solomon.html

The article is here: http://hubpages.com/hub/Why-Pornography-is-Bad-for-Men

The body is a beautiful thing. I mean come on if we were given this body to walk around and do all sorts of things with it and to it then it is up to us the see it as a beautiful thing.

A blanket statement that porn is bad for men is not the case. It isn't when used properly and in maarriage and both know it is being used to further their relationship.

What do you think of sex toys, are they bad for all too?

It does not make sense to me that in religions the Human Body is so disgusting yet God gave us it to use and live through and with and reproduce and everything that he made was good----where di it go wrong , why and how?

Rainbow Brite profile image

Rainbow Brite  says:

Well religion expert I am NOT, but I could have sworn that somewhere in her "Bible" which is supposedly the book that she worships by, I could have sworn it said something in there to that effect...about God being perfect and never making a mistake and all that good stuff....so if God never makes a mistake then all bodies are to be considered beautiful....and wasn't there something about two people running around naked all the time? Until...who was it...a snake? Or the Devil? Told them that this was bad....so if the Devil says that looking at the human form (or exposing it for that matter) is a bad thing, then doesn't that make it inherently good? Just my opinion.

Great hub, Lady G, one of my favorite writers is Henry Miller who wrote very graphically about sex and was banned here in the United States for quite some time and whether someone likes to deny that we essentially we are animals and are very much motivated by sex, it is a raw need and however we choose to express our sexuality is our modern right, whether it be through pornography or books. thank you for writing this hub.

You are welcome. I hate when people have closed minds and feel the need to censor others because they believe different or don't have the facts. I think of it this way...would anyone be comfortable being filmed in a porn flick? Can anyone picture Jesus watching porn or making his living by producing porn?

I think we could all agree that the Jesus of the Bible would never engage in either watching or filming, therefore we shouldnt' either. We are to follow His footsteps.

Our bodies are beautiful and they are meant to be covered, and to be uncovered only for the spouse.

Lady Guinevere profile image

Lady Guinevere  says:

That may be fine for you but there are those like I stated that need this stuff and it is between and man and a woman. Now I have knowledge of the other side like the ED thing. If you don't then that is OK too but leave the rest of us who do need this stuff alone. You are not to judge what others do in their houses and not all those who do this filmaking and are filmed do it against their will. Get some facts first. How about all the temples in India and the sex they dispaly right out in the oen----I guess they are dong a mortal sin. When did the body become defiled and by whom and who said so. Not everything is written int he Bible and for good purpose so you cannot say what Jesus would have done and what he wouldn't have.

LOL, I am sorry ETT, but I am now left with a vision that Jesus disapproves of us doing virtually every sport there is (as he did none of them), and that topless sunbathing is suddenly a sin, mutual showers with the same sex are wrong as they involve nudity without a spouse present, etc etc. I can just see Jesus shaking his head in disapproval whilst seated on the sidelines of a football game, simply because he didn't 'engage in either watching or filming' it during his lifetime!!

Lady G, you did not answer my question, but that don't matter we all know the answer whether we choose to admit it or not. jesus loved his neighbour as himself and yet he hated sin, we are to do the same.

Londongirl, Do you now what ED is and how it affects couples or even a man who is trying to find a wife??

Lady Guinevere profile image

Lady Guinevere  says:

The problem with men and women and porn is that men get aroused by sight and women by touch.  I was trying to find an article to get that information from but failed yesterday.  Men are different then women.  Porn doesn't really turn me on either unless my hubby is with me, but I am female and most of the people who are against porn are female.  Education is important to understand how men's bodies work versus how womens bodies work...but then again that is a taboo subject for Christians and others who are against the human body, ect.....

Lady Guinevere, good job on this hub. And, yes, you are right!

However, LondonGirl does have a point that not all people who oppose pornography do so out of religious conviction or sexual repression. Some people are just tremendously "normative." They have this idea that they know exactly what normal is, and that they get to legislate it and then enforce the laws against others, even when it involves only consenting participants and nobody is harmed.

Well, whatever anybody thinks of it, it's here to stay. I think there are a lot of interesting things you could say about porn that have little to do with morality or the Bible or Jesus, but on a purely personal level, I think that after the initial shock wears off it gets kind of boring and anatomical. The only moral objection I have to porn is that it is so often is made by people who prey on very young women with messed up lives--I mean, this is what people mostly want to look at, and the average 17 year old isn't going to make a porn movie unless she's a bit unhinged or someone is exploiting her. I don't see how to stop that though.

Now I have this indelible image of Jesus watching porn on his computer. I can't get that out of my head now. If the diatribe against it hadn't been written here at HP, I'd have have never gotten that visual...Oh my now it's getting worse...

Lady Guinevere profile image

Lady Guinevere  says:

Oh Pam, yes it doesn't take much does it to visualize a suggestion. lol

A questin for everyone: Sex education videos for the purpose of learning sexual teqniques between a man and women and the peolple that are being videoed as consenting adults--are they considered porn? Another question--the study of human anatomy in higher biology classes--is that considered porn too? If those who are against any porn, and that depends on your definition of what it is and who should not be watching it,....all things pertaining to ones body functions outside of a man and wife's bedroom is porn---so how do you learn how your body works and that of your mate?

Really important Hub!

To espres my opinion I will say "All that is in its place is good, and It become bad out of it"

SO when I know of a couple talking about their sexual problems, I think "Cheers" How many couples have problems and don't do anything about them? They might don't know or they just don't have hope, that's sad!

If a couple say We have something important. Us. Let's do something to make it work! That's great!

I think there is no bad ways, between brakes("), the only wrong thing is not to do anything. I mean if we a looking for a solution, we can make mistakes, everybody do it. But we are on the way, because we are fighting.

I've just published a hub, talking a little about sex and love. Well if u want to say something there won't be censure for respectful opinions.

Some education often dispells myths and fear of such topics as those which are tabooed by various sectarian groups and the general public. So I looked up something for you:

What is the origin of the word pornography?

This is a surprisingly young word in English. Pornographer is first recorded in English from about 1850. Pornography appears by 1857. These words are from Greek pornographos "writing about harlots", from porne "harlot". In English pornography referred primarily to ancient Greek and Roman texts of that subject. It wasn't until the late 19th century that it came to be used to refer to newly written works. It also applied to art of a licentious nature from its earliest use in English.

London Girl:  Yes, I got that you are against porn.  Sorry if you see that as stereotyping people, but I did not say that all people who are against pornography are religious or religious zealots.  Religious zealotry and an extreme negative attitude towards pornography almost always go hand in hand.  I was simply wondering if that would prove to be the case here and it was.  Unless I am mistaken, Lady Guinevere is a very religious and spiritual person, a minister or something similar, and clearly she is not sexually repressed, or not patently against pornography at least, so I am not confusing a dislike of pornography with religion in general.

I believe that the person in question is a religious zealot and that she is sexually repressed.  I was sexually repressed myself--thanks to the Catholics--and when at first I had the opportunity to become intimate with a woman, I was messed up in a big way. That, as far as I'm concerned, gives me the right to say whatever the f**k I want about it. I was almost screwed up for life. It was a devastating, horrible time for me. I stand by my statement about this writer.  It is my belief and nothing more.  So, my lud, you may put away your big red pen.

Anna, yes they are great and very eye opening as to how the church dealt with sex and all the implications. St. Augastine really messed with their heads! What I found surprising is the Birth Control they had privy too anad how often they used it--to the point of one plant's extinction!

I never knew she existed until I saw her hub AND I have only tried to comment on that hub about 5 times with all of them being deleted and not one has been read!!!!! Some of those comments are here that I copied BEFORE she deleted.

Misty's have been deleted too!She looses credibility when all comments that she deems unacceptable are deleted and then spreads such lies! Some of Misty's posts were in her favor too.

STOP Spreading YOUR lies and Lying is one of the ten commandments!!

I just want to say to Christoph Reillythat I am agree with him. The Catholicism just talk about sins, and that made me feel bad with myself all my life.

The religion haven't got to forbid anything. They have to talk of how to love ourselves. When we do love ourselves, many things change. We see us differently. We see to the rest of the people differently too.

I really like Dr. Wayne W. Dyer Your Erroneous Zones have shown the truth to many people. It's time to accept ourselves, the way we are.

The other great point is that we have to realize that we are evolution constantly. No even one situation define us. No even one situation is forever. Our mind works the same. We don't have to worry about how we feel. Everything come and go. With a little of patience we will understand ourselves and other people.

So I love myself the way i'm. And I don't put any labels to my life because everything change and the life take care of me, and take care of you.

Cheers to everybody

I heard an interview done with Ted Bundy, shortly before he was put to death, and he spoke briefly about the influence that porn had made in his life. He, as well as the other inmates in the prison were all addicted to porn, and it had caused them to think of, and treat women in a way that was wrong. He wasn't blaming porn for the things he had done because they were his actions, but he was saying that porn played a very negative role.

I understand your point about using it in moderation, but it's kind of like alcohol. As long as it's around, some people will use it responsibly, and others will use it irresponsibly. There's really no way to regulate that.

Also, regarding the Song of Solomon; I do not believe it is a porno. I believe it is actually a love story. There is nudity is love stories, yes? I would say that a porno is something done for profit and pleasure, which is not what's going on in the Song of Solomon. Also notice that it is mentioned several times, "I charge you O daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please". This sounds kind of like a warning, not to rush into love until the time is right. The book isn't exactly the easiest to understand, but it is clearly about two people who are in love. If there were pictures, I don't believe it would resemble a porno.

Again, I understand your position, but believe that the effect of pornography is more negative than positive.

Lady Guinevere profile image

daveearly,

When you say it is like alcohol you can also add food to that too. We can't say that porn is totally negative, just as we can't say that food and the obese are totally negative. We simply can't throw out the baby with the bath water. The only thing that is negative is what is in that person's mind who reads it and looks at it--you can also say the same with food and other things--gambling, and so forth.

I don't think Song of Soloman is porn either, just bringing it into view as a book about sex and love that many people who profess the Bible doesn't have this sort of thing in it when it clearly does. Erotica it is .........but is erotica porn?

Whose to say they didn't sell Song Of Soloman as a book of love or anything else?

There is another aspect you brought to mind. Those who take pictures of their children naked are said to be doing child porn when in fact they neither sell those pictures or they go no further than their families---is that porn?

I wouldn't think so.

"Whose to say they didn't sell Song Of Soloman as a book of love or anything else?"

Don't know.  Perhaps they did, and perhaps they understood it better than me also.  LOL

"When you say it is like alcohol you can also add food to that too. We can't say that porn is totally negative, just as we can't say that food and the obese are totally negative. I know.  We could add a lot of things to the list of use and abuse, but there's really no way to keep it under control between those who would misuse things and those who would not.  Sometimes to help keep others from being tempted into doing certain things, we may have to sacrifice some things ourselves.

I watched the first one. I wouldn't say according to the Bible, but according to men who thought they had the authority to tell people what to do.

I am not saying to go outside of marriage for sex. There be many couples who have problems in tht department of their marriages, and the only way to get it fined sometimes is through cunseling and through porn for the men. You believe that they should not have any opportunity to fix their marriage? Just as watching on one video aren't you also stating something with only on tenth of the facts?

Peter, yes I thought that strange of her to post a picture such as that and then say that it is a bad thing. Why post it at all if she ws after something more pristine?

One look at the porn industry should settle this 'debate' once and for all. To say that such a vile institution should exist for the sake of a urology office is just silly. And show me a couple that needs porn to help their relationship, and I'll show you a couple that has problems far deeper than anything porn can fix. I truly believe this hub misses the mark, and tries to show porn in an innocent light, when honestly, nothing could be further from the truth. For every couple porn has 'helped,' I could cite one thousand relationships it has destroyed.

Porn: creative activity (writing or pictures or films etc.) of no literary or artistic value other than to stimulate sexual desire

Seeing as I how I am a man, I would like to think I have some understanding as to how my brain and body works, and having a woman tell me I don't is kind of ridiculous. (I assume you are one, judging from your avatar). The point is, you state that not all porn is bad, then go on to list things that clearly do not fall into the category, such as instructional sex videos and the Song of Solomon. Based on your criteria, just about anything alluding to sex is considered pornographic. If you don't want to be misunderstood, don't try redefine porn by comparing it to literary and artisitc masterpieces, i.e. Song of Solomon, or Venus of Milo, for example. Of course I understand your point, it's not rocket science, but you misdefine porn, plain and simple. And no, pornography, correctly defined, is never a good thing.

Jrueter,

Since you are a man, tell us what your definition of PORN is. Also could you tell us how your body works with sex? I didn't go with my thoughts abou how it works but by scientific knowledge. So go ahead. I want to know what you know.

Oh and while you are at it what makes a man rape a woman? What does a man's body do with sex in that nature?

1. I already gave you a definition of porn

2. Is it really necessary, or appropriate to explain how my body works with sex?

3. Scientific knowledge? I'm sorry, I've read it three times and I'm just not seeing what you're talking about in that regard. A reference to the Kinsey Institute hardly qualifies this hub as scientific.

4. What does this conversation have to do with rape?

I just don't agree with you. Sorry, it's nothing personal.

Oh, and trimar7, you must be new. This is hardly a volatile debate. Pretty tame from what I've seen in the religious ones. Besides, arguing is a good pastime, as long as there are no insults, I see little reason to not engage in some good old-fashioned back and forth. Not to mention, no one can stop anyone from "speaking" and sharing. That's the magic of sites like Hubpages.

Jrueter, I can only bring a hosre to water but I cannot make him drink. I don't know what you are talking about with the number 4--having to do with rape. You brought it up. jreuter profile image

Um, no, I didn't bring up rape. You did. Are we reading the same exchange? What I don't understand is why you can't address the points I made, instead you just accuse me of ignorance. Pretty simple cop-out.

Lady Guinevere profile image

Lady Guinevere  says:

I have addressed your points. I will not agree with your statements and that makes you more determined to make this an arguement. I will not play that game. When one sees the body as evil or disgusting, then that is what it will become. You said that I only had one scientific site, well I went back and read the whole entire thing and the comments too.--there are 4 sites and more listed. You won't go look at them because you think your body is not worthy of expression and that you think others are not entitled to that either. Keep your eye on what you are doing and not on what others are because if you are thinking it then you are doing it--somethig like that is said in the Bible.

The Rape comment, yeah I brought it up, but you didn't answer my question---what causes a man to rape?

Ted Bundy was already sick before he did those things.

I feel that if it is a problem between a couple then it is a problem between them. I also think alot of it is jealousy and then that is their own problem because jelousy is really possession of another person. Jelousy is what really tears families apart and they very well don't look into the root cause but just the symptoms.

OK I have a few comments on this hub and the comments on it.

First, I personally don't like visual porn but it's none of my business if someone else watches it. I do think that porn can be damamging and addicting for people, I've known several who are addicted to porn and can't have a normal sexual relationship without it anymore. In this way, yes, porn is damaging.

There are other people however, who use porn as a tool in sex between themselves and their spouse. I may not personally get it, but that's their business, not mine.

Furthermore, not all Christians are backwards and repressed. I was raised Catholic, and my mother was very open with me with regards to sexuality and the human body when I was growing up. In High School I was the one that the other girls came to with questions, even though I did happen to be a virgin until marriage. I don't think it's fair to generalize people based on religious beliefs any more than it is far to generalize people based on their sexual practices (Including whether they choose to watch porn or not)

The one thing I don't happen to buy from your article, is that porn is a treatment for ED. In all my nursing classes they've talked about medications and psychological therapy to help the guy "get it up" and actually stated that there is no scientific evidence that porn helps with erectile dysfunction issues.

If the ED is caused by an accident or cancer or some such, then no amount of porn is going to make that penis erect, though it may help if there's a psychological issue causing it, it is more likely that psychological counselling will help in the long term in these cases.

Now with all that said, I do know that sometimes porn is necessary for some people who masturbate, simply because they need something to get them going on a fantasy. My wife and I actually read erotic literature...she uses it because she needs a fantasy to latch onto and I read it because I like having a mild "turned on" feeling sometimes, that hopefully will lead to an intimate night, though I don't actually masturbate using erotic literature.

To each their own but I thought it would be important to make a few points.

I admittedly didn't watch the video, but only because I'm not in a place where I can (no headphones, damn). Nor did I read all the comments - there's so many! However I agree with you Lady G that porn is not always bad, that it has some very good uses, and that no one has the right to judge others for viewing, filming, or being filmed in porn.

As far as "what would Jesus do" - there's a book called "Stranger in a Strange Land". It starts with a mission sent to Mars to find out what happened to the people sent in an earlier mission 20 years ago. All that's found of them is an adult human male, child of one of the couples sent in the first mission. He has been raised by martians, but he is taken back to Earth and taught human ways. He ends up founding a new church, and is the author's idea of what Jesus's second coming might be like. The church members practice full nudity on a daily basis.

I'll spare any more details than that. It's a great book, and I think it's a great representation of what Jesus might have to say about the way we do things today.

Dizze Blogger, Yes, it is how we relate to our own bodies that matters. When a child is born they have no clothing on them. Immediately we clothe them and then we expect them to act a certain way depending on their genitalia. When they are other than that we freak out.

It is our own focus on that part of the body that gets us into trouble, but why do we only focus on that part of the body in the first place?

upal19, I agree.

Having said all that, I suggest that some of your audience here read "The X-rated Bible". You would not believe what you will find in our very own Bible!

Another quick note, in America it is illegal for anyone who is not legally an adult (i.e. 18) to be in the adult industry.

I don't think adult content is for everyone but I don't think it has to be a problem for anyone. CAN it be? Yes, it can just like anything else including EATING. (Yes, just as there is a Sex Addicts group out there so too is there an Over-eaters Anonymous.
