Why Social Network Advertising Doesn't Work

Well, most of us have been on social networking sites. How many ads have you clicked? Hardly any? You aren't alone. Social networking, a way that many eyes are collected in one place is not, I repeat, is not working as an advertising resource. All that money that folks paid for Facebook and Myspace, etc, was a waste of big, big bucks. It would have been better for the internet if these social networking sites had never been invented.

Well, maybe that is an over-the-top statement, but you get the picture. Fact is, social networking is a place to gather, not a place to shop. Ads assume you have shoppers who want to click on the ads and buy stuff. But social networkers are not interested in buying stuff and they aren't even interested in clicking on the ads!!

So, I view these places as being useless in terms of where you advertise. Some of these social networking sites are so important to people that they don't dare click on an add from another member, fearing that they could be banned. If they have adsense on websites they are twice as scared. And this even though Google encourages the clicking of ads on social networking sites as long as it is not on your own page.

Oh well, guess we have to pay through the nose and advertise with adwords or on high traffic sites. Remember those were the original ways to advertise online. It turns out that those were the best ways to advertise. Now, the question remains, will those sites and that kind of advertising make you any money? That is the big question.

It has been shown that even pay per click is useless on social networking sites. So any of you who know what does work should post in the comments section.

If anyone cares to challenge this article you can feel free to comment below. If anyone can build a better mousetrap for advertising then lets see it.

So What Is the Value of Social Networking Sites?

I am not saying that there is no purpose for social networking sites. Certainly, SEO is helped, backlinks are gained, and maybe a better PR is achieved by posting at social networking sites and blogs. However, most of the traffic is useless regarding ads. We just cannot fool ourselves about this.

How correct. Social networks have taken the business of catching eye balls a bit too far and its not getting converted into advertsing dollars. This is causing their revenue model to fail miserably.

I agree. It is almost like the net would have been more profitable without social networking. I don't know if that could be proven, but there would just be blogs and information searches.

I have to agree that facebook would not be a good place to pay & advertise hubs, but the company itself is is worth around $3 billion dollars for a reason; it's earning potential. It is not currently earning billions a year (even though it could) because it's founder is focused on building the site by ensuring quality. I don't know anyone on myspace anymore because it is filled with ads and junk. Facebook is not and everyone is migrating there.

Facebook is a phenomenal tool for businesses to advertise on, but not in a traditional banner advertisement way. It's a waste for a small company or website to advertise on there, again, I agree. Large businesses, for example can host events and invite thousands of people in a targeted area to boost turn out.

Since mostly younger people use the site, the ads have to be integrated into the contect on the site. The movie and music industry plays a big part in facebook's current yearly earnings.

I have never clicked on a facebook advertisement on the side bar , but I have clicked on ones or attended events that were well integrated. The future of the internet is not google adsense (unfortunately!) and not banner ads. Young people see right through it; we've become adept at ignoring it. Other ways are needed to catch our attention and facebook is well on its way of developing those.

The company's current estimated revenue projections for 2015 are at $1billion a year and I would honestly be shocked if they did not meet that goal.

Anyways, that's just my two cents! Thanks for listening and again, I agree to the extent that it is not good for hub page advertising or small websites.

It can definitely be good for traffic to advertise your hubs to your friends.

I think that social networking ad commericals have a place, sort of a way to get the world out, but people don't click on many ads. So they are more a commercial than an ad. But adsense is the backbone of the net, and if young people don't click there may be less incentive to make websites.

I guess it really depend on the Social Network you are involved with. And your approach to trying to sell to your newly found friends. (WHOM YOU REALLY BARELY KNOW). You need to build an relationship with those you are being SOCIAL with. Once trust is built, your "FRIENDS" will be more prone to affiliate themselves with you. **Buy Your Products or Services.** There is a Buzzbot Property online based on Social Networks and it's packed with information on the many Social Networks online Today. I think you have a point. I am saying that statistically social networks are not the place for traditional google type ads. People rarely respond like they do in a search environment.
