Is Apple Alienating Their Best Customers?
Today Apple released their 1.1.3 firmware for the iPhone and iPod Touch. After seeing some videos of the leaked software, I was definitely interested in upgrading. A couple of UI enhancements like the jiggling movable icons just seemed kinda neat.
First let me say, I HAD a jailbroken 1.1.1 iPod Touch, and had a few applications on it. My favorite being a NES Emulator (with Zelda and Punch Out). I was never able to get the hacked version of Mail to work.
So I upgraded to 1.1.3, as expected, all of my 3rd party apps were gone. I was hoping for some new functionality though. At least some jiggly icons? Nope. Not even that.
If you're an iPod touch owner, you have to pay $20 for the new "real" upgrade. (Mail, Google Maps, Notes, Stocks, Web Clips, and cute movable jiggly icons).
I'm perfectly happy to buy software. But these are already available in the iPhone firmware. But it's purposely taken "broken" on the iPod Touch. Also, if you purchase a new iPod Touch, these pieces of software will already come on it for free.
As Far As Any Free enhancements I Noticed in 1.1.3
- Ability to set a 4-digit password to lock your ipod.
- The ability to view rented videos from the iTunes store on your iPod.
And Thats About it! Thanks Apple.
I'm sure there are probably a few "under the hood" bug fixes that I'm not aware of. But as far as day-to-day use goes, it wasn't enough of an improvement to warrant breaking all of my 3rd party applications.
Needless to say. I'm going to go downgrade my iPod Touch firmware back to 1.1.1 and put my free applications back on. Lots of people are frustrated about this, check out the Apple Forums. These are lovers of Apple products and early adopters who pay extra to have the newest Apple product.
It's unwise for your biggest fans to continually feel like they're getting a little bit screwed. In the short run, its profitable maybe. In the long term, its bad business.

I do understand your frustration Karl!
I will say one small thing in Apple's defense that I didn't think of until after I wrote the article. They offered free major firmware upgrades for Apple TV and for the iPhone. Both items, once you buy it from Apple, they continue to generate revenue from you with the purchase of phone service and iTunes movies.
The iPod Touch doesn't offer the same post purchase revenue. That firmware update is 150 mb and bandwidth isn't free.
Is that reason enough to charge customers who paid $400 for your product a couple of months ago? I still don't think so, I still think it stinks. Check the Apple forums, and lots of people are pretty upset by this. Honestly, outrage caused Apple to cave with the recent iPhone price drop (even I don't think they should've). It proves they're capable of doing the right thing after the fact.
Dam, im pissed off , upgraded to 1.1.3, no extras exept my dock looks shiny...
I live in South Africa, so I cant evin open an iTunes account to buy the friggen extras for 20 buks, witsh is a lot in my country, not to mension what I paid for my Touch in the firs place...
Hi Edd
Are you thinking of downgrading back to 1.1.1 and jailbreaking again?
No doubt, just waiting for a reliable hack to downgrade...
"Also, if you purchase a new iPod Touch, these pieces of software will already come on it for free." - Now this tiks-me-off.
I have the 1.1.1 firmware on my computer. If you want, I can get it to you........ better yet, here is a link to a good article showing how to downgrade. You don't need a "hacked" firmware, just the actual firmware. There is even a link to the firmware on the page.

Get the actual firmware, and http://jailbreakme.com does the hacking. = )
Hehe, good stuff, thanx...
Heard more people about this.

Fucking shit this, had 1.1.1.. Working as a charm with the iPhone apps.
I thought that it however could be worth upgrading now when you could get Mail.app and those aswell with the UI enchantments.
