Do try to stand out from your competition by addressing a unique need. That implies you have to do a little market research to find out what people want that they are not getting from the current products or services that are already available to them.

The purpose of finding your niche market is in order to cater to their needs. So make sure that your niche can afford the price you set for your product. For example, if you are selling something to a niche market that is in the middle class income then you don't want to price your product for those that are in a higher income class or you will lose money.

Niche marketing can be very successful if you do it accordingly. The first rule of niche marketing is to research a market first and try to establish a shortage in the market place, after which you will need to find a product to fill that shortage. The mistake most people do is to find a market for a product that they already have.

The first thing you do before you do any research is to decide on the type of market that interests you. Below is a good starting point to find your potential list of markets to review.

1. A market following one of your passions. You need to list all the subjects that you feel passionate about, such as hobbies, sports, your work, or any subjects that you are knowledgeable about. If you are passionate about the subject then it would seem natural that you could make others passionate as well.

2. A market within the internet Marketing niche. This is probably the largest market currently on the Internet, but it is a highly competitive one. There are many niches within the overall market. They are: Private Label Rights, Resell Rights, Search Engine Optimization, Traffic generation, Blogging, Membership Sites, etc.

3. A market that follows the high spenders. The third is using Search Engine Optimization to find information regarding which subjects have the most searches made, and there is a high spending value in that market. The highest money spending markets include: Dating, Travel, Stock trading, Diets, Pets, Real Estate. Again there are many niche markets within each of the above topics with room to dig down to find the best possible returns.

With your list of markets to explore, make extensive notes as you dig into each market. Ensure you can evaluate the number of searches in the niche, assess whether there is money being spent in the niche and something missing which hopefully you will be able to find and sell to the market.

When you have completed the research on your niche market list, you will need to make an evaluation of which one presents the best business proposition, and then start developing the niche. Remember that Rome was not built in a day; slow and steady wins the race. It's a matter of time the product will be selling like hot cakes.

Now that you have selected your niche market and determined who needs your product or service. Consider the characteristics of your ideal prospect, by asking yourself: Who are they? How do they act like? How can I become somebody special to them in this area of sales?

Your goal is to market yourself to this niche as the one that has the solution to their needs. It is time to market your expertise along with your product or service. By focusing on a niche market you have the opportunity to build a reputation for yourself as a specialist in your field. This reduces the rejections and stimulates new business inquiries from others. To become a specialist you should use different types of marketing strategies.

To build your reputation you must become involved in the niche you are servicing. Join organizations and trade groups of your niche market. Become a member of their community. Obtain positions within these organizations and trade groups of your niche market. Become a member of their community. Obtain leadership positions within these organizational groups. Get out there and be seen and heard.

Write articles with information that your niche market would find informative. Submit these articles to trade publications for your niche. Contact your local paper about writing niche specific articles, start your own newspaper column.
