8 Damn Good Reasons Why You Need A Website!
62Get Yourself A Free Website
I have been a graphic and web designer for over 5 years and am now happy to share my knowledge of the online world - I have sifted through a LOT of hype and rubbish to bring you the 'really good stuff!'
I go by the theory 'Give a man a fish - feed him for a day, Teach a man to fish - feed him for a lifetime'. So, whilst still designing sites, I am also taking the time to put all my valuable knowledge into e-books so you don't have to sift through the hype...

8 Damn Good Reasons Why You Need a Website
Validation:
Today a website's first requirement is to validate you as a business. Think about it you look up things on the web before you buy most anything. And, the public is following suit.
Business Influx:
How much business are you missing by not having one? If you got 3 extra jobs and each job made you $100, I'm pretty sure a site would pay for itself very quickly.
Low Cost:
Utilizing the Internet for your business is very inexpensive.
Customer Support:
Provide personalized support for your customers with answers to common questions; assistance on specific products or services, provide a variety of ways in which you can be contacted. Do all this without answering a phone or hiring additional staff.
Specials:
Say you just received a new product and you want to advertise a "special." Reaching your customers via the phone, sending a letter, or FAX would be time-consuming and expensive. With the Internet you can send out an e-mail to 500 of your best customers with the click of your mouse.
Open Hours 24/7 :
A website allows your business to be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are millions of people, from all over the world, online at any time of the day. Many of them are looking to source products or services. If you run a conventional brick and mortar business, you can only attract the people who walk or drive past your shop, in any one day. Having a website designed for you allows you to attract new customers that would otherwise never find you - and they can do so when your shop is closed! A well designed web site also gives them a reason to revisit the site in the future.
Details & Referrals:
What is easier to remember, mysite.com or 01215501528? A website address is much easier to remember than a telephone number, so it stands to reason that having a website increases the likelihood of referrals - and let's face it, referrals are one of the most important sources of new business.
And finally, one of the most important reasons why you need a website:
Competition:
If people don't find your business on the Web, they will certainly find a Web site of one of your competitors.

Excellent advice, Debs - it's scary how many businesses (even traditionally brick and mortar ones) don't have a website. The amount of business they could be missing out on can make the difference betweena successful business and one that "just gets by".
