There are many ways you can choose to backup your data. Most may choose to use a removable media, such as a DVD/CD or a USB flash drive. Both are easy to use and you can move them from place to place. Probably the most common method of backing up data is by use an external hard drive. With the vast storage space and low price, it is a popular option for many.

The one type of media, or method, that many people don't consider with regards to protecting their data, is that of online backups. With the increase in speeds of broadband today, online backup is a viable solution to most who wish to keep their data safe. There are many online backup service providers available, with each have several data storage packages to offer.

If you are unsure about backing up your data online, consider the following few points:

  1. Online backup is secure. Online backup providers take security very seriously. When your data is backed up, your files are first encrypted on your local machine, some with 448-bit encryption. The files are then transferred to the online backup service provider's servers over a secure SSL connection. This is the same type of connection that is used to connect to your bank online. The files then remain encrypted on the servers so only you can look at them.
  2. Your data is offsite. When backing up to an external hard drive, chances are the hard drive is located next to your computer. This is good since you have a second copy of your data, but bad in that the backed up data is located in the same room as the original. If disaster were to strike, both sets of data would be lost. By backing up your data online, your backed up data is now in another location. If something were to happen to your home, your backups would still be safe.
  3. Automatic data backup. An online backup service provider will usually supply an application that you install on your computer. This application runs in the background when your computer is started and monitors your files and directories. If any file is changed or added, that file is automatically backed up. Now you don't have to worry about remembering to backup your files.
  4. Online backup is affordable. There are many different prices and packages available to you when backing up data online. I currently use an online backup provider that provides unlimited storage for less than $5 a month. I current have over 160 GB of data backed up, and have yet had a storage space problem. Many charge a fee for a specific amount of storage, so look around at alternatives to see which package meets your needs.
  5. Easy access to your files. With an online backup, all you need is an Internet connection to access your files. They are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you have replaced your computer, you simply need to connect your new computer to the Internet and you can start downloading your files from anywhere.

The above points provide several good reasons why you should look into online backup if you would like to keep your data safe and secure. While there are other methods of backing up your data, online backup is another way you can make sure you will never lose your data.
