"If I pick up my newborn, she'll get too used to it and become dependent on me":

Guess what? We hear this sort of thing too often and it just isn't right!

I started dressing my son at birth and he I'm SURE one day he is going to be able to dress himself. Helping him dress when he's not able to is not going to make him a dependent dribbling invalid.

JUST LIKE settling him back to sleep. Oh, you argue: My child now settles itself back to sleep. Thats because your baby now knows that you don't come and comfort it when it needs you. This is not what we should be doing with our children.

C'mon people, cuddle your babies, sometimes you have to listen to your instincts instead of some outdated 1940's book focused around bloated formula fed babies and mums who wanted to maintain the tequila lifestyle.
