The cracking of the sides of your lips is caused by a condition called angular cheilitis. This problem is also known as perleche or angular stomatitis and it is characterized by the inflammation of the labial commissure (the sides of the lips).

Depending on the cases, the cause of this problem can be either a bacterial infection or a fungal infection by a fungus called Candida Albicans.

It has also been demonstrated that people who have iron deficiency or a deficiency in vitamin B-2, B-3, B-6 and B-12 are more vulnerable to this skin condition.

There are also other factors that favor the cracking of the sides of the lips.

For example, in kids and teenagers, the exposure to cold wind or the exposure to the sun can cause the lips to crack. And what makes things even worse in this case is the constant licking of the lips in search of the relief from this symptoms.

One other factor that is common among elderly people who have lost their teeth and is the use of a ill-fitting dentures. This causes the over closure of the mouth which then favors the build up of saliva in the corners of the lips and favors fungal and bacterial infections.

Other factors include allergies to toothpastes or to lipsticks and cosmetics. And pre-exisiting conditions like seborrheic dermatitis.
