Bilingual management: important in manufacturing

Why bilingual management is important in manufacturing
With increasing numbers of people that don't speak English coming to America every day, there is a growing importance for companies' management to become bilingual. Bilingual management is a key in the success of business in America today. This is especially true with manufacturing companies.
With the number of employees that manufacturing companies require, it is hard to limit your employee search to one language. If a company can offer jobs to employees with different language backgrounds, they have so much an advantage. Not only will they be able to fill their open positions, but they will be able to bring a diversity and culture to their company. Those different cultures can bring to the table many ideas for change and improvement that can make such a difference to a company.
Communication holds a tremendous amount of importance in any business. A company cannot plan to stay productive very long if there is a lack of communication. If managers can understand that importance and learn to communicate with all of their employees, they will have the ability to grow stronger as a company and as a leader. Leadership is a skill that every person can benefit from.
It is important for manufacturers to have bilingual managers to keep job positions filled. The hiring process should not be painful for anyone. If there is a language barrier then there will be many stumbling blocks for the hirer and the hired. Companies should have to turn away applicants because of a language barrier.

This site has many articles pertaining to this and many other manufacturing topics.
Language barriers can cause problems long after the initial hire. The problems can start with teaching. Every new job requires new training. If you cannot offer bilingual training you are hurting your staff and your production. Even if there are audio or video recordings available to take care of the training, any questions that come up will remain unanswered.
Next comes safety. It is hard to communicate the importance of safety and the rules for being safe with a language barrier. Having bilingual management that can help focus on safety to their employees that can't speak English can greatly reduce the risk of a negligent accident. Every company can benefit from fewer accidents.
One of the problems that can occur most often with language barriers between employees and management is discipline. If an employee needs to be disciplined for any wrong action in the company, who will take care of it? Another problem is what if the mistake or incorrect action was a result of lack of communication or miscommunication? Then you have to think about who is really at fault. Is the uninformed employee in the wrong or is it a mistake on the part of management in not correctly conveying policy and procedure?
Managers working with each other and with employees can create a working environment second to none. Bilingual managers have such an advantage for creating that environment. Their knowledge can bring employees from different walks of life and draw their cultures together to grow and learn from each other.
Should the unemployment rate be higher among those that are bringing other cultures into America because of companies' lack of communication skills? Jobs should be readily available for any American that wants to work. Managers have the chance to stand up and be leaders for all hard workers. They can take initiative and do something to better their company.
