Why did my hub score drop?

Over a period of last two days my hub score dropped 17 points. I was around 92 and at the time of writing this hub it is 75. And for the past year it has never been so low. Was the past score computation incorrect or the present algorithm incorrect. As it is the hub score computation is kept a closely guarded secret. But a sudden drastic change totally shocked me.

As per my knowledge original content, quality of contributions in hubs/comments/forum posts and quantity of traffic determines the hub score. I agree my command of English language leaves a lot left to be desired. I am not an English Major and ever since my 12th standard never have seriously studied English. Even in 11th/12th class we were more concerned with Maths, Physics and Chemistry to get a good rank in Engineering entrance exams and English we just had to pass. I regret that I did not pay as much attention as I should have.

I wish there was somebody who peer reviews and lets me know what is wrong with my English. If I am being all of a sudden penalized for my inadequate skills then I would certainly work on it. I agree sometimes I may not be spending as much time in creating capsules and organizing the hub which would have further lowered my score. In my defense I can only say that I have a full time job which is taking a lot out of me these days.

Initially I joined hub pages when I was single to get out of boredom but now I feel that I belong to this hub family. I owe it to this "family" to be a positive member. I would henceforth take out more time and put in the necessary efforts to create better quality hubs. Finally, I am thankful to everybody for there sustained encouragement so far and looking forward to being a improved member of this hub family.

Hi CW! I've noticed some funny scores, such as Cris A's, and I wondered what's going on. I don't think it's you at all, some others have been commenting on the forums about this funny score behavior for the past few days. I'd say, take the hubscore off your mind as I think it'll go back to normal eventually. BESOS!

Elena- I am reasonably competitive but at the same time I realize my limitations too. If somebody at hub pages feels my English is sub standard then I would like to know. Helium has recently banned Indian people and I was wondering if there is any similar line of thinking among hub pages think tank too. I agree some Indians predominantly publish picture hubs but categorizing all Indians wouldn't be fair. Btw I just checked Cris A's score and it is 96 maybe 3/4 points drop from his top score. Or when you checked it wasn't around 96.

I really don't know why and I just got up to analyze my test results for work. And when I checked hub pages my score dropped even further. You are right maybe I should just take it easy. Thanks and Besos. :D

Last night when I read Cris A's latest hub his score was 84, or 86, I forget which, but anyhow, way below his usual score. That, plus the comments in forums, made me think there is some system readjustment going on. Maybe someone from HP will explain this to you? Until then, yes, por favor, take it easy :-)

I read in the afternoon briefly in forums but none of there scores is drastically reduced. I was left wondering why me. You maybe right that they are doing some phase wise "system readjustments" and mine is yet to be adjusted. Hopefully mine should also climb. But anyway it would certainly help me if anybody points out some obvious flaws which I can improve upon. Have a great weekend. Besos!

Countrywomen: your English is lovely. Yes, we all have the occasional typo (me too) -- I think Elena is right, and there is some general adjustment going on.

Teresa- Thanks for the "lovely" compliment. In case even if I have the typos please do point out as and when you see them. I am far from perfect but simply accepting and not doing anything about it wouldn't make any positive difference at all for me. I will wait till Monday and then send an email to hub pages team. You both have set my mind at peace and I can now concentrate on my official work for which I got up. :D

Lita and I were discussing there is probably a bug in the system. Your hubs are great, so I would not fret too much. I am sure the Hubpages staff will probably explain the weird scoring fluctuations because several people have brought this up in the last couple of days.

This is a system-wide issue. People's scores have been dropping like stones over the last day. It has been said to be a bug in the system. (It's kind of funny to see the widespread concern. :) )

SweetiePie- I just briefly skimmed through the forum earlier in the day. And now when I logged in I saw everybody's score is reasonably where it usually is and mine was at 8 pm when I last checked 82 and when I got up it reduced to 75. Thanks to you, Teresa and Elena for boosting my morale. I will now peacefully complete documenting my test results for work. Have a great weekend.

Lisa- I am reading that thread and most of the people have reported there scores to be at the level where it usually is earlier. Anyway I will just take it easy for now. Thanks Lisa for stopping by and setting me at ease with my "concern". :D

Hi CW, how have you been? I missed seeing you around. My hubscore has dropped below normal too a few hours ago, but have since gone back up to the usual figure. Glad to see that it's not only me. :)

My own knee jerk reaction was to personalize when my own score dropped from 100 to 93 overnight. I had to remind myself to take a step back and quickly found that it was happening to most others. A closer look revealed Paul Deed's explanation what it was a result of a bug they were working out with some addition. Yet, many people continued with all kinds of worries and theories.

As for your English, your written English is wonderful, and far better than many who are native speakers (especially here in America).

Yes...your English is good and your hubs are also.

My score went from a usual 97 to 99 (I briefly hit 100 for a moment!) to 90 but it has gone back up. I also wondered about it but this has happened previously. So I do not fret about it...just keep writing.

I've often wondered if each new hub pulls the score down a bit for a brief time? Generally the new ones are at a lower score until they start getting read and have some comments.

I've ALSO wondered about this...

If I do not publish a hub that is finished and ready to be published, as the days go by the score goes up. Why?

I enjoy your hubs, Countrywoman. Keep hubbing!

Why pay attention to the score? Are you writing for some arbitrary score or are you writing to share your knowledge and abilities. Are you writing for your own pleasure or do you need some artificial score to validate you and your ability?

Your writing is fine. When I was active writing Hubs, I would worry about the "score". But once I moved on, I saw how foolish it was to let someone else rank me. I was not writing to compete. I was writing to hone my skills and share my knowledge and experience.

Bottom line, your score really means nothing. If your fans like your work and you enjoy expressing yourself, mission accomplished. Tell the score to the shopkeeper next time you buy something and see what difference it makes in the price you pay. None. It only matters here and ONLY if you let it.

Don't get caught up in letting things you have no control over have control over you.

Hello, CW. One month into HP and I still feel that I'm a novice and believe that there is still a lot more I have to learn. I've experienced some drops in my score and didn't understand why, as I was very active in the forums, comments, and was cranking out hubs like I was getting paid a king's ransom to do so. My theory is that hubscores are much like the stock market. I've seen newer people than me get "hot" and leap frog me because somehow their activity/traffic simply spiked and left me dragging my butt around the race track.

I'm sure you'll be fine. There's nothing wrong with your English and I don't believe that has much to do with your declined hubscore. I agree with JC above, as your Hubscore cannot be controlled...Keep your chin up and the rest will follow!

SweetiePie- Thankfully the bug has been fixed.

Jayb23- Actually thanks to you for inspiring me to continue writing.

Wandererh- Yes it is always a pleasure talking to you. In "California" we didn't finish completely testing. ;)

Jerilee- I shouldn't have come out with my own assumptions. I see every month somebody starting a thread complaining about Indian picture hubs. I see one site has totally banned Indians. More ever my integration tests related to work didn't succeed after I checked in my code which simply meant I had to spend the weekend working on it. I also had to finish a work document related to my feature which is no way as pleasurable as writing hubs. I didn't read more about this bug in hubpages affecting scores which I agree is my fault too(although I checked a few hubbers scores and they were in normal range then). More than one factor resulted in my "knee jerk" outcome. I now regret for taking this way too personally. And also thanks for motivating me and I will try to improve my English further.

Peggy- Individual hubs I never bother much. But overall I do like to be in a certain range at least. Thanks for encouraging me and I will try to publish better hubs in the future.

John- I am aware of my limitations but at the same time I have always been reasonably competitive. There is no other way I can describe why I feel this way. Agreed I did join Hubpages to enjoy writing and discussing but still one is known by the company one keeps. If I am in certain range then I might have lesser credibility. I don't know being a girl from India where sometimes women are just not taken as seriously as men I tend to react in ways which may not always be rational. I do become emotional over certain issues. But I will try not to let this personally effect me anymore.

Dohn- My theory about somebody finding "issues" with my English has been blown away. I should have waited and then this wouldn't have happened. My score is in the usual range where it hovers 89-94.

Thanks everybody for stopping by and commenting. And sorry to hub pages team for imagining things which had very little to do with me.

Hi CW! What's with this 'substandard English' thing? Where did you get this from? I never felt that way about your hubs. BTW your hub score has come back to 91. Your hub score might have gone down to 75 due to some kind of system adjustment but language can certainly not be an issue here. You're the queen of HP, dear. Nothing can go wrong with your scores. Sleep tight!

CW: I don't think your English is substandard or that Hubpages would penalize anyone for their use of the English language. I am thinking that if your score was in the 70's earlier and its in the 90's now, it was a glitch.

Good to see you again. :)

Interestingly enough ... my score stayed at 96 through all of this hubbub (pun intended).

At first I thought to myself 'maybe Hubpages likes me so much they granted me a stay from execution', but then I saw all the greats tumbling down and thought 'maybe Hubpages thinks of me as too mediocre to mess with'. Haha!

I'm just glad to see things normalizing, as I see a lot of people working hard to produce quality content, and while the hubscore shouldn't mean a whole lot, some of us (such as myself) see it as a personal barometer of how we are doing on the site, and I actively seek to make adjustments if I see my score falling.

More often than not for me ... it's a case of just not producing hubs on a regular schedule. doh! :)

My hub score also dropped 10 points and I wondered why. Then I saw your hub and I decided to see what it was about. I was writing a new hub, "GOD'S FOOD: BROCCOLI CURES CANCER".

By the time I had published it, the score went up 10 points and I am back in the normal range. The important thing is not to worry, but to complete what I have started to do.

Anyway, I thank you for writing so I know what's happening to others beside me.

I find no flaw in your English. I follow your hubs and think you do a good job.

Even i have seen my hubscore dropping from 98 to 90. This has happened to me earlier also. But it does not worry me much. Many hubbers are seen complaining of the low hub score in the forum.

By the way, I am looking forward to your 50th Hub!

lindagoffigan  says:

Sometimes the hubscore has nothing at all to do with you grammar or your style of writing. It is a known fact that the Google Search Enging keywords sometimes put misspelled word in the search because that is how people sometimes misspell the words.

I have written many hubscores and suggest that you look up my articles on www.hubpages.com/profile/lindagoffigan and search under hub page score so that you will learn about the importance of a hub score and how it is actually calculated.

I have decided that the hubscore is calculated not so much on the nature of your writing but on the longevity of your stay at hubpages. It is rare that a newcomer to hubpages will get a high hubscore. It is best to write more quality hubpage articles so that you will get a higher score. Just hang in there and see that your hubscore will increase as long as your write more quality and relevant hubscore.

Anjali- Thanks for so many kind words. I am really flattered "queen of HP".

Marie/Cindy- Clearly it was a glitch. You, my friends are always supporting and encouraging me with kind words.

Plants&Oil- In future I will keep that in mind. Due to many reasons I was under that misconception. Also have been reading some disturbing news online lately.

Yoshi97- Congrats on your high scores. Glad to know that you strive for such high standards. Yes it is a good idea to introspect now and then. I will keep your advice in mind.

Einron- Thanks for following my hubs and yes it is a relief to know nothing is amiss. I will visit your brocolli hub.

Anamika- Thanks for your encouragement. I hope I write a good 50th hub.

Linda- I will try to improve and publish high quality hubs. I will check your hub on the scoring methodology.

Thanks everyone for stopping by and commenting.

Countrywomen,

Just wanted to let you know I left the comment capsule off the birther hub because I knew I would have received intelligent comments from you and many other hubbers, but I did not have time for the nonsense comments I would also receive. I did include your comment on the hub though, so at least people can hear your take on the issue. I hope that is okay, and if you do not want it there I will take it off.

What happen to me was my score is going up, but when I went into my account where i can see all my Hubs that have been written, I had alot of down traffic, I don't know if I'm saying this right, but I was having less traffic going to my hubs. I really don't understand but as long as I am getting the Word of God out there, SO BE IT!!!! Much love to you!! Come visit me when you get time. GREAT HUB!!!!!!

Hi not the english but the "what you do" on hubpages is important, you know when you go on a hub and read, and comment, not just on yours, as many said not a english problem, a how much time you have to work on hubpages to begin with problem.

Hello, I wanted to say you are doing a great job. I have noticed alot of weird scores. It's not how others score us, but how we feel about what we have done. Remember this, alot of the people in the world if they listened to scores wouldn't ever have gotten anywhere. Keep up the good work.
