Why do Animals have TAIL?

A tail is an extension of the spine, so it is very delicate.

A tail is usually used to help keep the balance of an animal so that it can sit on branches and such. This is why a cat can stand on such a narrow surface, and may be why they always land on their feet.

They have a tail because there is no reason not to have one, there are some people that are born with tails, it's not necessarily odd... We all used to have tails...

Animals have tails for assisting in balance and steering, propulsion,

grasping, grooming (swatting flies is one example) and for display. One of

the gaudiest tail displays I can think of is the male peacock's tail. Believe

it or not, we still have remnants of tails because or ancestors did. This is

a good example of a useful characteristic (the tail) evolving in our ancestors

but not being retained in the descendants (us!) because of a loss of evolutionary selective pressure. Because we can modify our environment, it is unlikely that we will evolve to regain tails!

When people moved down from the trees, there was no need for a prehensile tail so it gradually evolved and shrunk into the little tiny tail bone we have today.
