Why do I get lots of clicks on Google Adsense but not a lot of money?
59Increasing Adsense Income
The amount of money you make per click for Google Adsense ads is determined by several factors:
- Ad placement
- Article keywords
- Smart Pricing
- Number of ads per page
If you are writing for HubPages then you really only have control over one of these factors, article keywords. The others are all controlled by Hubpages since they place the ads on each page and it is their account that is reviewed by Google for SmartPricing.
So, how can you increase your Adsense income on HubPages through article keywords?
It's quite simple actually. All you need to do is write articles in niches that advertisers are willing to pay for. Some obvious areas are insurance, credit cards, and loans, but there are many others that pay quite well.
One easy way to find out how much advertisers are paying for keywords is to open your own Adwords account with Google and research the keywords that you think would be higher paying. You can open an account at http://adwords.google.com
Once you create your account you can then log in and go to the 'Campaign Management' tab. Click on the link that says 'Tools' and on the next page click the link that says 'Keyword Tools'.
Place your keyword or keywords into the box under 'Enter one keyword or phrase per line:' and then click the button labeled 'Get Keyword Ideas'.
Once the keyword list is generated you may need to click the drop down box titled 'Choose columns to display:' and then choose 'Show Estimated Avg CPC. This column will show youhow much advertisers are paying (on average) per click for Adsense ads targeted to each keyword. You can also sort this column by value by clicking on the column header.
When writing your articles make sure to include the high paying key phrases in your title as well as in the the beginning and ending paragraphs of the article. The Adsense spider will pick up on these key phrases and serve up the appropriate ads. Cha-ching! You just increased your earnings per click!

Not a problem at all and you might be surprised about some of the things that actually pay fairly well. Just go to Adwords and start looking at some common key phrases and I'm sure you can find some decent paying niches.
As a journalist I'm sure you won't always have assignments that you want to write about so might as well start practicing now :>)

These tips are actually really helpful. I had no idea about the adword thing. I don't know if I'd be able to force myself to write about something just because it will earn me more money, but for others who fortunately can, this is great! Thanks for answering my question
