'k, someone from the HubPages team asked me to write about why us bunnies make such good pets. I just giggled, hee hee  - I mean, why not?

First of all, we are very cute! Serwiously, we are even cuter than puppies! And kittens. Maybe even guinea pigs, although they are so cute that I even luvs them. And the cuteness doesn't go away when we gets bigger. We will always be cute, no matter how old we get. Ever seen a baby bulldog? They are so cute when they are little babies...then they grow up and gets bigger and I don't know they don't look as cute as they did in that little basket with those other puppies.

Are you not entertained?

Second, us bunnies are very good at entertaining you. While I wouldn't recommend it, some bunny owners like to put little outfits on us, or put us in little cars or other funny scenarios, then take pictures of us---->

Serwiously, though, from one bunny to another, this is just not right. Us bunnies are verwy sensitive creatures, and something like this might be too traumatic for our tender sensibilities.

♦Do NOT try this at home, ever!♦

But you don't have to put funny clothes on us or put us in Barbie cars to amuse yourself. We do all kinds of fun stuff all on our own that will have you going "Aw" and "That is so CUTE' for hours on end. Things like:

  • the binky. the binky happens when your bunny is happy or overjoyed, usually when you bring him (or her) a treat!
  • the nom-nom. the nom-nom happens when you feed your bunny a treat that makes a lot of noise when they eat it, like a little slice of banana. they pounce on it like a kid on an ice cream cone in July, and they make the cutest -smek-smek-smek- noise when they eats it!
  • the tooth grind. the tooth grind happens when your bunny is relaxed and happy, usually when you are petting it softly. your bunny will rest comfortably on your lap or on the floor and, as you pet him, will make this cool little sound by softly grinding his teeth together. it is very gratifying when they do this because it means they trust you and love you. believe me, us bunnies don't trust easily because we know some humans want to eated us, so when we trust you like that, it is a very big deal!
  • the herd of buffalo. 'k, you will just be sitting there quietly reading, listening to the radio, or watching TV and all of a sudden, you hear this thundering galloping across the prairie of your carpet and here comes your bunny, running like mad around and around the room! when he does this, it sounds like a herd of miniature buffalo. it is hysterical!

  • the stretchy-stretchy. us bunnies will stretch out really long so that we look like furry Slinkies. We do this when we are completely calm and relaxed. It is fun to see your bunny all stretched out like that, his ginormous hind feets sticking out in the back, heh.

  • general hopping and tomfoolery. we are bunnies. we gots big hind feet, and we knows how to use them! we can hop onto your sofa and sit on your tummy, sniffing around for treats. "you got any carrots in there?". We will wander into your bedroom in the wee hours of the morning on a Saturday when the rooster hasn't even woken up yet and hop onto your bed and wake you up. When you notice us, we hop off and go hide, waiting for our breakfast!

But don't bunnies leave "cocoa puffs" all over the floor?

'k, now THAT is just a vicious rumor! Us bunnies are completely litter-box trained, and any self-respecting bunny NEVER goes anywhere but his littler box! I myself goes only in my box. My bunny parent has a litter box in my living quarters (cage) and one in the room where I hang out the most, and when I need to use the necessities, I goes either in my living quarters or in the box in the corner. Every time! So don't worry, you will not need to be following your bunny with a dustpan!

Also, us bunnies just do NOT smell. You know how some people can tell right away when you gots a cat in your house, even though they never sees the cat? Well no one ever knows I live in this house unless they knows my bunny parent, or sees me strolling by. That is because our *ahem* poos are as dry and odor-free as cocoa puffs. I am serwious about this!

Aren't bunnies expensive?

Bunnies don't cost a lot to buy, especially if you go to a rabbit rescue and adopt one. In fact, that is what us bunnies recommend, that you adopt one from a bunny rescue and take him home. There are plenty of sweet little bunnies just waiting for a human friend to love and care for them.

At first, I have to say we are a little on the pricey side, but so is any animal when you first take them home. You gots to buy the following if you get a bunny:

  • a cage or pen. It should be large enough for the rabbit to stretch out completely in any direction.
  • a water bottle or water dish
  • a food dish
  • two plastic litter boxes (one for inside of the cage and one for outside of the cage)
  • timothy hay. A 10-pound box is $20, and will last your bunny for about three months. Since hay is such an important part of your bunny's diet, you should get only timothy hay, and plenty of it.
  • timothy pellets. Bunny afficionados are split as to the merits of pellets. If your bunny is used to eating them, you should buy them for him, but only give him about a tablespoon a day. Bunny doctors and owners recommend pure timotiy pellets, and a superior brand like Oxbow Timothy pellets.
  • area rug to put under your bunny's cage. This is a soft place for him to stretch out and easy to clean up.
  • brush or comb and bunny nail clippers for grooming.
  • toys like a willow chewy ball or grass jingle ball.

That's really all you need to get started, and will set you back total around $100, which, when you break it down, isn't all that bad, considering you have a bunny, food and all his accessories. If you want to give him treats, he can eat the same vegetables you guys eat (just in smaller amounts. My bunny parent also gotted me a beanie bunny, and I like to snuggle with it. That set her back five bucks at Target.

Are bunnies noisy?

Heh. Bunnies are the quietest pet you could ever have! Serwiously, there isn't a quieter pet except maybe (shudder) a snake. We is very quiet and don't bark (and we don't bite either) or scratch your furniture, which also makeses us good pets. And you don't have to walk us in the park or anything...we gets our exercise doing the Bunny 500 around your living room, remember?

So, you can just leave bunnies alone then?

NO. Us bunnies are very affectionate, and love to be petted and cuddled and adored. You can leave us alone if you have to go to work, of course! Just make sure we are either in our cage or our room is bunny-proofed (no electrical cords to chew on, etc.). If you ignore your bunny, or do something else he doesn't like, he will let you know by thumping just like Thumper did in 'Bambi'...this is how bunnies express their anger or react when they sense danger. Us bunnies are very sociable creatures, and need interaction with our humans.

Your bunny might also express his disappointment in you by turning his back on you. Serwiously, this is a calculated snub on his part, and you will have to do some work to make him forgive you, like an extra treat or petties or something like that.

Part of the joy of bunny ownership is learning all the bunny protocols, and interpreting what your bunny is saying to you. We is VERY communicative, and able to tell you exactly what we want or need if you are paying attention.

Are bunnies good pets for children?

Too many people make the mistake of buying a bunny for their children at Easter without bothering to research them at first. Bunnies are very sensitive creatures, and delicate - Their little bones can break if someone is holding them too tight and they wriggle to get away. Some bunnies have even broken their backs this way!

Which is why a bunny would not make a good pet for very young children. The child should be old enough to understand that rabbits require commitment, and need to be handled with reasonable care and have their hay, food and water freshened daily, and the bunny should be played with or petted every day as well.

Bunnies live for ten years (sometimes more), so make sure you really, really want a bunny and can handle the responsibility of a bunny before you take one home. And when you do, your life will change. You will smile all the time and look forward to visiting with your little furry friend.

Finally, bunnies gets along with dogs and cats and even birds, because we are very sociable creatures, so if you already has one of those, that's ok.

You've forgotten to mention that rabbits need veterinary care, and that female rabbits will need to be spayed if they are not to almost certainly get cancer at the age of two or three years old.

Also, many bunnies hate to be cuddled and become quite distressed at being manhandled in any fashion.

As you claim to own a rabbit you must know that their urine DOES absolutely stink and their cage needs to be cleaned on a daily basis if you're not to live in a rabbit sewer.

I love rabbits, but they're not necessarily perfect pets, and it is hubs like this that make people buy rabbits only to come crying for advice after the fact asking why their rabbit poops on the couch, why it scratches and bites and why it doesn't want to be their best friend.

Seriously. This sort of one sided cutesy writing does a lot more harm than good when people go out and buy rabbits and realize that their bunny is nothing like you've described.
