The myth and facts of Valentine's Day flowers
With the air soon to be filled with the love of Valentine's Day, you may be thinking that you need to head to the store for some flowers for your special Valentine's Day guy or gal. After all, even if you forget the present, forget the note, forget the name of the person the flowers are meant for (let's hope you don't have that many special sweeties!) the one thing you should never forget is the Valentine's Day flowers.
Flowers have been a special part of Valentine's Day for as long as most of us can remember. Maybe its because a red rose symbolizes love, maybe its because girls are supposed to like flowers, or maybe it's because flowers are the easiest thing to grab in a hurry next to chocolate for those who do forget until they are about to head home. Ever wonder why people really do give flowers on Valentine's day?
The reason that you give flowers on Valentine's Day is not quite as clear as you would think, since there are three myths surrounding why we celebrate flowers in the first place. However, for those who like the lore of forbidden love, you probably prescribe to the version of a priest who married couples against the will of the Emperor Claudius the third. He outlawed marriage so that young men would enjoy join his army, but Priest Valentine would still conduct marriages in secret as he believed deeply in love.
For those of you wondering what this has to do with why we give Valentine's Flowers, hold on, I promise we are getting there! Claudius eventually found out about Valentine and had him sentenced to death for disobeying the law. Note: This could be why so many people are against wars, war and love have never quite gone hand in hand! Meet St. Valentine, the first civil conscientious objector of war to be thrown in prison!
Anyhow, while in jail Valentine ironically fell in love with the jailor's daughter. Their love was shortlived as his death sentence soon came up. Before he was beheaded, he gave the girl a note and one red rose, hence the very first Valentine which came flowers, or flower to be accurate.
So ever since Valentine's Day became officially noted Valentine's Day cards have come attached to Valentine's Day flowers. Cute eh? Well, now that you know, you might even be able to charm your special girl or guy, as you can note that you will forever be by their side unlike the first bearer of Valentine's flowers! Most girls would swoon over that, however, make sure you do not forget the Valentine's Day flowers or your night (eh the couch instead of the bed) may not be much better than poor St Valentines!
