Why do you become a fan of 540 hubbers in a row?
70
When I get a new fan I usually find out who they are and then visit the person's profile to find out more about them.
I recieve an email notification when someone that I'm a fan of publishes a new hub, because I like to read the hubs of these folks (that's why I'm their fan). And that's why I never fan back anyone unless I find that I like their writing. If I did, my mailbox would be littered with notifications about people I don't know.
I think that's what fanning is all about - tracking your favourite hubbers' activity.
But some people think it just simply looks good to have a host of fans, and apart from that there is nothing to it. These people bacome fans of dozens of hubbers in a row.
Why am I mentioning this? Because someone liked me while she liked approx. 540 other people at the same time. Her crazy fanning frenzy can be traced back over 28 subsequent pages in Hubtivity. 28x20=560, but some folks fanned her back upon impact so... I didn't count it but it was about approx. 540 people.
The thing is that these people are just so obvious. If you became fans with one, every now and then they will ruin your Hubtivity screen, as it will show they're running a crazy conversion campaign again.
I'm just writing this because it's so... maybe ridiculous. :)
I've researched the person who inpired me to write this hub.
Here are my findings.
- She runs a fanning campaign every six days or so.
- Her frenzy never ceases until she became a fan of at least 10 people.
- During her longest run she liked about 540 people in a row.
- Her longest run lasted over 28 subsequent pages in Hubtivity.
- Usually one third of the people she fans become her fan.
- The 540 fanning took place 6 days before the writing of this hub.
- She has about 150 fans by now.
Why do people become a fan of others they don't know?

Some of them even leave "fan mail" -- asking you to read their hubs and become their fan. That really predisposes me against them; whereas, had I found their hubs in the natural course of things, I might well have been happy to read and enjoy.
People think they are on facebook or myspace, the more fans the more popular, I do admit to fanning others quite often but only if I like what i read and I would hope hope in return they would do the same thing. I am your fan, did ya know?
I hope Teresa comes back, because then she will smile. :)
When I see that I am just one of many fanned in a row, I don't fan back.
I think the number of fans we have is a reflection of how many people like what we are doing. I'd like it to remain that way.
I always do a little research before fanning anybody, if someone becomes a fan , if I like what they write I will fan back regardless if they have already fanned 100's others, must admit I am more cautious with these hubbers.
Well yes. We should try not to be judgemental. Funny these days I find myself more concerned with the internal affairs of the community, wanting to write hubs like this. There are lots of things going on here. :)
Ah Ha, you are becomeing addicted, my friend, lol join the club!
Hmmm... I have noticed some of this oddness but basically dismissed it as 3 options: the very immature who are socially inept, the devious social site manipulators or sadly, someone in their manic phase of bipolar depression. I usually just fan them back and let the Universe sort out the rest...
To each their own. More fans means more email or turning off the emails. I like interactions with people. For some people, clicking the "join" button is all they have time for.
True Haunty. I actually do what you wrote in Para 1 - out of curiosity and if I like their Hubs I will become a fan.
Haunty - Cooooo lol! I'm not great at joining fan clubs. I'm a little bit fey. I have moments but generally, I'm a bit pants. I'm surmising there must be a point or reason behind random, rapid fanning.
Rated up :) And may the fancrazymegaclickerhubber get the message. If ever they stop fanning long enough to actually read some of the articles published by the people they hit upon ...
I have been here for 2 years and it still drives me nuts, when they fan so many people. I will fan the ones that I read and all of my fans that I currently have I sincerely work on reading there work, as they inspire me to continue on my journey, I can say honestly that I have not became a fan of everyone but if they stay I certainly try as this community of writers is wonderful. :)
I think they do it to get email addresses, then move on
I cannot agree with you more! It's so annoying to click on hubtivity tab and see it sprawled across the page that abc has become a fan of almost everybody on hubpages - pages after pages with the same news. Thankyou for highlighting this 'issue'!
It's a bit of a farce isn't it, this fan business? One never really knows a person's motivation.
Haunty - it's done with the express purpose of hogging the Hubtivity Highway and haunting it forever more with their presence - don't say you weren't warned :D
You couldn't have said it better Haunty! Being new I added quite a few (it felt anyway) the first week but now I have backed off and do what you have said here first -- research & read!
As I have voted, I think most them do that, in the hope that someone might return the favor. Although I didn't come to that point, maybe during my first week the most is that I fanned 6 xs in a row, hoping they'll do the same, at that time I wanted to feel that I belonged. Although not everybody reciprocate, there’s no hard feeling for me. Afterwards I've realized that you have to participate and be active in a lot of things here to fit in. I believe that we have some responsibility as a fan, and I do that in every hubber that I fanned, if not leaving some comments I made sure to look/read into their stuff. And I don’t become a fan and then gone afterwards, some will just become your fan and after you have just do the same, you'll find out he was gone, although maybe they have their own reasons why they quit ones fans club, we’ll never know.=)
So, we deny fans? It seems kinda mean, but when you say this person was on an avalanche of fanning, what the heck - who needs that? There are some nuts here, just like in the real world.
I now have one thousand fifty two fans as I am writing this comment. And I confess I sometimes wonder if people fan me because they see I have so many fans already. LOL But of course there are exceptions. And they write wonderful comments and fanmail too. So you know they are actually reading your hubs. :-) Thanks Haunty for being one of those who read my hubs. I'm enjoying reading yours too you know...
Another great Hub, Haunty.. "When I get a new fan I usually find out who they are and then visit the person's profile to find out more about them."
HP is a lot of things, and most importantly, it's a SOCIAL site. If you dilute your focus and go for quantity of friendships, you'll never find true qualities of those you're wishing to get to know.
And if they don't want to know you, it's probably because you haven't figured out how to be the best you yet. Although everyone evolves at their own pace, and this means there's plenty of people around you that will get what you're saying...
...just my four cents, stupid inflation.
Thanks for doing HP a service and making this hub. You should be commended!
I dont go round just making fans for the sake of it honestly.... If I fan you I like you...... usually anyway......
I was wondering about all the fan frenzy!
There are several who have done this. I once saw a so-called "hubber" who did fanning for several days in a row and joined thousands of fan clubs including those who have been inactive for a long time. I looked up several of his hubs and found they were directly copied from many sources. Last I saw, he had a hubscore of 1, but people still join his club occasionally. He has at least 291 fans. I'm not one.
I agree with Teresa that the "fan mail" asking you to join someone's fan club "in return" is pretty obnoxious. I check my new fans out and if they have something that interests me enough to want to keep up with their new publications, I'll join their club. I'll also un-fan if I find it's not working out for me. Sometimes, I've decided not to be someone's fan at first and then become intrigued by a forum conversation of something else & joined then. Point is, fanning to be fanned is LAME. :)
Hope you would have understood now...
Yeah, I'd be standing under...
I checked out a person who became my fan and they had no hubs or comments. It was impossible to know this person. And they had a huge list of "fanning" like you showed above. I agree with RooBee. I check my new fans out before I become their fan and I assume most people became mine because they like my slant. I hope it stays that way. I'm glad you wrote about this.
I too hope that people fan me because they like what I'm writing. But that is not always the case. :-)
Like I said before, this ain't myspace.
dori
Hey - thanks for forgetting that you have already commented and commenting again. :)
LOL that's alright...I guess it's a heartfelt wish I truly feel I need to say it again! Hahaha
Ok I'm joining your fan club only because I liked the honesty and truth attached to this hub. :) You did a good job by bringing this up. Only a couple of days ago I read another hub on the same issue. I guess lot of hubbers have started noticing this 'fanning frenzy'. Good work.
I've seen people as such, annoys the heck out of me... if your going to join a FAN club don't you think you should actually like, read, and comment on their work? Anyways, I only fan people who I actually LIKE their hubs, I never fan back because someone fanned me, maybe it's rude but I like to try to keep on top anyways. :)
Hi - I'm starting to feel this fan business is a bit overrated. But I want those of you whom I fanned back to know that I did look at your hubs first. :) Though, I also appreciate your kindness. So thanks.
You are so kind Haunty lol
I started a thread on this very topic a few months ago. I was annoyed because they were clogging up the hubtivity. As it turned out, I had fanned them at some point, probably when I was under the influence of drugs or when I was new here and didn't know better. In any case, I learned to immediately go to their hubs and un-fan them, which keeps them from showing up in MY hubtivity. I felt better.
Um, I'm fanning you. Please read me and love me and fan me too please! And besides, we agree.
exactly...I couldn't agree more. Eapecially when those very same people show up in the forums asking why their hubscore is so low. Um...duh...quit obscene famming. :)
Why the hell am I so kind Haunty lol again?
The people who I have become fans of are limited in number, because I believe in a community of writers. I'm a little idealistic in some ways, yet a skeptic in most.
You may be idealistic in this, yet it's a good approach. :)
I have already fanned over a hundred hubbers. In contrast, I have less than 100 fans, which I don't mind at all. I'd rather they fan me because they like what I wrote or I fan hubbers because I like what they wrote without expecting them to fan me back. By the way, I am now one of your fans =).
I enjoyed this hub. thank you for sharing.
Excellent hub! I only fan those that I've read & I enjoy their work. Some of the articles that I read about SEO, back links, etc., I just add as a bookmark instead of fanning, because truthfully, I can't keep up with everyone's work.
I hope when I get a new fan it is because they enjoy my hubs, and not to get fanned back :)
Same here, Jane. :) Thanks for dropping by.
Haunty, I just wanted to let you know that I became a fan of yours, because I enjoy your work. I find it original and fascinating. When I started HP I was a little overwhelmed by all the hubs and had no clue as to what hubtivity, fans, and figuring out how to generate traffic to my hub were until I took some time to research it. Needless to say I barely skimmed the surface of it. I came across your hub “5 challenges for writers” and enjoyed it, which let me to this hub. By the time I was done reading I wanted to read more of your hubs in the future. After the long winded line of BS it all boils down to this…your writing is interesting and to the point. A fact that I find admiring. Thanks for posting this hub because it eases my guilt about not always becoming someone’s fan. I felt the need to reserve my fan base to those writers that I can benefit from in the future and as always have something original and interesting to say. Thanks again!
Thanks, tlpoague. I'm glad you're with us! :)
When I first came to hub pages I had some one fan me and I got excited to start with. When I looked at the hubtivity, they had fanned tons of people about every minute. That kinda disappointed me. I thought to begin with that they liked my hubs, but there's no way possible that they even had time to read one. Thanks for writing this hub. It's been an eye opener.
ftgfmom, thanks for stopping by. I know what you mean. I get dishonest fans all the time. They comment on one or two hubs and even write some fanmail. But by the things they write it is apparent that they are only pretending to have read the hubs. In all honesty, I'm taken aback by this behavior.
I'm doing it now, with wild abandon. It's my new job I think. I was never one for joining fan clubs and now I'm doing it like it's going out of fashion. The joys of life - annoying new hubbers :)
LOL, you, ralwus, BC... even Mark Knowles joined someone's fan club the other day. :)
The wonders of the world never cease to amaze me. Mark Knowles is a wonder. I quite like hoofing new hubbers into the forum. That's where I point them anyway. I hope they're following my advice and saying hello. It's the right thing to do - announce your presence. Nothing I didn't do. Only I didn't make a thread, I sneaked into other peoples :)
"I recieve an email notification when someone that I'm a fan of publishes a new hub, because I like to read the hubs of these folks (that's why I'm their fan). And that's why I never fan back anyone unless I find that I like their writing. If I did, my mailbox would be littered with notifications about people I don't know."
Thank you for saying what I've been thinking ever since I joined HP. If someone fans me, I check out their hubs (only polite) but I don't fan anyone unless I either (a) really admire the quality of their writing, or (b) think they've got original/interesting stuff to say. And even then I err very much on the side of underfanning - there are people on here whose writing I like very much, but I still haven't got round to becoming their fan. And I'm not remotely offended if I fan someone else but they don't fan me back.
Quite a few forum posts seem to consist of people begging for fans. WTF is *that* all about?
Empress Felicity just said it all for me. I'm often fanned by people with a request that I become their fan in return, but why would I do that unless I like their writing? A fan is surely just that - a fan!
Couldn't agree more. I was curious when I saw your avatar and so here I am and because I like this hub can I be your fan?
elayne lol, you do whatever you want. :) This hub is as old as my hubpages account.
Hi, Can I be a fan, you dont have a choice really, I am a fan now, came across your name when justine is looking for you in the forum! Maita
This is 'too nice' of you. Thanks, pdh ;)
