Why does the second amendment exist

The great thing about the Bill of rights is it is a foreward thinking document, the first amendment gurantees our right to freedom of speech. The founders of our country knew that at some time we as Americans would need to say something about something and wanted us to have that right! That sounds a bit stupid "something about something" but they had no clue what may set the citizens off.

The second amendment states"A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." Notice that it does not say the right of the Army to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed, the word "shall" is paramount to protecting our freedoms to keep and bear arms, "shall" means that it is a guarantee we can keep firearms.

Some people seem to think that firearms should only be kept by a well regulated militia, but the amendment says "People!" I know that they probably didn't see the United States as the huge force that it is now but does it matter? I have owned firearms since I was 12 years old, I used them initially for hunting but as I got older I used them as a way of life, I am a former Recon Marine and former police Officer and firearms are an important tool for each job!

I own and carry firearms now for self protection and am very knowledgable in their use, I do not threaten people or expose people to the fact that I am only a hand movement away from producing a weapon with the force to kill! Sadly there are alot of bad people in this world that have them and would just as soon use them than walk away from an encounter. This causes Law makers to keep revisiting the right to keep and bear arms, many limitations have been imposed on the people regarding this fundemental right.

Convicted felons cannot own firearms, people convicted for some misdemeanors are prevented from owning them, is this good? Probably, but if they want a firearm they will find a way to get them, and this is where the safety of you and I is threatened. Some Legislators seem to think that prohibiting everyone from owning guns is the best way to handle the situation but as I have stated the bad guys will get them so who is really at risk?

The good guy becomes the target of the bad guy without the ability to defend themselves! Is that want politicians want? Maybe the politician is actually the bad guy! Maybe our Government is the real "boogie man" why is a fundamental right always under assault by law makers? Could it be they want a disarmed citizenry because they would be easier to control? Tyranny is a funny thing, it seems to creep instead of run full blast at its victims, we seem to be losing our freedoms a little at a time, is gun ownership next?

In California it is hard to by a firearm same in New York city so in New York they go down to Virginia and pick up as many firearms as they can purchase legally. I don't know what they do in California, maybe go to Mexico and get them hell maybe even come to Texas! Is our Government trying to disarm us and if they are why?

I believe that people like Obama are in fact creating ways to take this right away, and if I'm right then there must be a reason, is that reason to control us so they can do what they want? An unarmed citizenry would be damned easy to control. Our right to keep and bear arms is to protect against just that sort of thing! I watched a video earlier of a woman in Virginia reminding the federal Government that we citizens have the right to vote a tyranical government out and if that does not do the trick we can go another route! That is exactly why the right to keep and bear arms exists, to prevent against tyranny!

They have resorted to out right pushing, may not be a good idea to push too hard. Thanks for the comment!

Well said by A Texan. I don't see any ambiguity in what the Founders said in the 2nd Amendment. To paraphrase for those who don't get it, "In order to be able to raise a militia (people's army) whenever the freedom of the state (The U.S.A.) is in peril, the government is not allowed to tinker with a citizen's ability to own a weapon of any sort and that includes firearms."

Hey Tex - nice hub. Whenever I hear about the 2nd I always think of the 1st. It is the existence of the 2nd that guarantees the 1st. I saw a sign that someone had on 9/12 in DC - it said "We've come unarmed (this time)" Kinda liked that.

Great Hub! The people who get so stuck on the phrase "well regulated militia" conveniently ignore the usage of these words at the time the BOR was written. Support or disdain for the 2nd amendment is a litmus test in the highest order because along with the 1st is the shining example of freedom. A government who cannot trust it's citizens with arms or free speech cannot be trusted itself.

My ole man is a hunter/gun enthusist, I learned to shoot last fall when he was sighting in his guns, I support all our rights as Americans.

I feel you are right about that, this would have dire and fatal consequences, because Americans will be powerless and unarmed and criminals and gangs will have all the guns, what then? What would everybody do, have to wear bullet proof vests at all times.

First he raises taxes on ammo booze and cigarettes and he himself IS A SMOKER!!! But I heard him give a speech and he was coming down hard on smokers and us having to pay for treatments for diseases that smoking causes!!! It's totally messed up!!!

All I gotta say is the NRA is going to have one hellacious fight on they're hands if that is the case!!!
