According to an article entitled: How to go Braless by Vanessa Raymond

  • 1. Breast Health. Circulation within the lymphatic system is an all-important part of maintaining breast health. And, you guessed it; bras compress the lymph vessels that are close to the breast’s surface, preventing the flow of the lymph fluids that help to clear out toxins. In their book, Dressed to Kill: the Link between Breast Cancer and Bras, authors Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Grismaijer contend that regular bra-wearing may well be responsible for the huge increase in breast cancer in modern times. So, many women choose to forgo bras for reasons of health and not just comfort. To women who feel compelled to wear a bra, consider massaging your breasts at the end of the day to increase lymph fluid circulation. (To the guys who are reading this, we’re talking massage for the purposes of health and not arousal.)
  • 2. The Nipple Factor. Ever heard of fripples? (Hint: It’s not the name of a new Starbucks drink.) The possibility of prominent visible nipples is one of the biggest deterrents to many women who might otherwise go braless. Here are a few solutions to embarrassment over visible nipples:
  • 1. Nipple tape. Nipple tape comes in several different shapes and sizes but the primary idea is to compress the nipple to the level of the surrounding tissue, thus making it less distinctive. There are variations to the nipple tape theme, such as pasties or glue-on cups. Beware that some of these products are designed for function and others for decorative effect.
  • 2. Remember your jacket. Do you remember the boys in high school who liked to turn on the fan and watch the results? When shopping for frozen foods have a jacket or wrap close at hand. In a similar vein, you don’t want to get caught braless in the rain.
  • 3. Vests. Vests are wonderful accessories for going braless with ease. There you are beneath your vest–fashionable, comfortable and braless–with no one the wiser for it.
  • 4. Don’t look down. Let’s face it. There will be eyes glued to your breasts, whether you’re wearing a bra or not. But just because they’re looking doesn’t mean you have to.
  • 3. Size Matters. Girls who are AA on a good day can wear just about anything without support but those who are more well-endowed have a different, um, set of problems.

The flop factor. One issue for women with large breasts is that movement of the breasts can be painful, particularly at times of the month that breasts tend to be swollen or sensitive. Good posture can help to offset this effect.

The modesty question. Big mammaries tend to migrate more than the smaller ones do….out of one’s shirt, into one’s face when you lean over, and so on. Your choice of clothing makes a big difference in this regard. Get a sense for which articles of clothing contain (but don’t restrain) your breasts. Practice at home until you feel comfortable being out in public without a bra.

Chafing. Large breasts can chafe the skin just beneath the breast. Sweating, rashes and even fungal infections are also possibilities. Many women find that silk and cotton camisoles worn next to the breast lessen these issues. Some women also apply antiperspirant beneath large breasts or carry a small towel to dry the area beneath their breasts on occasion; an item one friend of mine affectionately calls her “titty towel.”

Shelf bras. Shelf bras are pretty much what they sound like–a support built into an undershirt that basically provides a shelf for your breasts to rest upon. Unfortunately shelf bras tend to make your chest look like, well, a shelf, but they do provide some support.

  • 4. Breast Fetishists aka “Breast Men.” Most women are all too familiar with the mannerisms of this particular breed: During conversation, the man’s eyes are glued to your mammaries to the point that you’re tempted to start using sign language. Sociologists and anthropologists remain unsure as to why breast fetishism is as pervasive as it is (sounds like a topic for a government study). Meanwhile, get used to it…….breast men are ubiquitous.
  • 5. Breaking In. A week on a topless beach can do wonders for your self-consciousness about going braless. But if you’re not planning a trip to the Mediterranean anytime soon, try starting out in the winter when you’ll be wearing layers anyway. Get used to how your breasts feel hanging loose–remember that women had been living that way for years before the invention of bras.

There are many ladies and actresses that preferred to show themselves to the public and without wearing a bra.  They might be thinking that by doing so it will make them look sexy, though some really look awful.  Anyways, according to many that wearing bra is a proper way to protect your breast and it indeed a proper way, but some experts would not say that it is unhealthy but instead just making your self comfortable in sexy manner.

We all know that we can not always go braless, but if we do go braless at home and other times when a bra is not needed, will it affect our health? Is it better for our health or worse?

I decided it was time to find out. Sure all us women have grown up to believe that our breasts will sag and the ligaments will stretch out if we do not always wear a bra. I am sure you have heard this rumor, but is it true? Here is some information that I have found by searching for an answer:

Women with cups sizes larger than a DD should wear a bra throughout the day. Any size smaller than DD can get away with wearing a bra only when they want to, like when they are out of their homes or in the public eye. Bras are made to lift the breasts, shape the bust, and support the bust so that you will have a better shape and look in all your clothes. A good fitting bra with plenty of support can alleviate back and shoulder pain in women with larger busts. So yes, a bra can be important to your well-being. But should you wear a bra all the time, even at home or even to bed? No this is not healthy.

Read on to understand why:

**Many natural-health experts encourage women to not wear bras, and a number of women who follow this advice report that they don't suffer from breast pain, even during PMS. One therory:

Without the daily constriction of a bra, circulation to the breasts is optimal. So even if hormonal fluctuations trigger an increase in pain-causing breast fluid, the body is able to reduce discomfort. And some experts take this a step further, theorizing that a buildup of waste-carrying fluid can lead to cancer, making proper circulation a must. Still, no studies confirm this.

The bottom line:

It's perfectly fine to go braless, but there's no bona fide health reason to do so. Instead, simply make sure that the band of your bra (especially if it is underwire) isn't too tight. You should be able to comfortably fit two fingers between your chest and the band, and there should be no dent in your skin when you remove the undergarment. This might alleviate some of the tenderness you've been experiencing.    Elizabeth Gunther Stewart, MD, FACOG. (First Magazine).

Make sure you buy the right size bra (not too small, too tight) for your body. Measure properly and often. Your bust can change with weight loss, weight gain, PMS, Menopause, water retention, body building, and exercise. Therefore, at least measure your bust each time you buy a NEW BRA. This will help guarantee a proper fit. Wearing a bra that is snug, constricting and one that makes you pull at the girth will not allow you ample circulation. A proper fitting bra is best for better health and and a better fit in all your clothes.

Go BRALESS at home and when you can and never wear your bra to bed. Give your body the comfort it needs.

And when you do need to wear a bra, get the right size and a comfortable fit. Take a look at my other guides to get the proper fit by using the proper measurements. Then come check out my auctions for bras that you will love to wear. - by Sharon pokerqueen2win

I was basicallybraless until I was about 30 - I am only a b or c anyway - the only time I wore a bra was because the dress was very thin and nipples obvious or if Iwas wearing a rough shirt that rubbed the nipples. Unfortuantely these days I need a bit more support as they head south but I still only wear a soft cup bra - and they are bloody hard to find too!

Thank you for this hub and the included educational photos.

Women should feel free to go commando-ette without scumbags (like some of the above crude men) making comments.

I say to all (good-looking, nice-figured) women to feel free to go braless! I will suggest going one step further...go completely topless! ;-)

Just as a men's necktie a bra serves no purpose. Not only are they uncomfortable, they do not improve your figure. I had never left the house without a bra until I was almost 26 years old. Once I found out that it turned on my boyfriend, felt more comfotable and made me feel sexy, I have never worn one again, other than to work and it has been 20 years.

Great article. I'm starting to go braless more and can't get over how much more comfortable I feel. I even worked out without a bra for the first time and it felt great. I do believe in modesty when I'm out in public and will only go braless when I'm wearing loose fitting tops.

Ok, I just want to put my 2 cents in. I had huge breasts, got a reduction, they looked good for a while, but the first mammogram (after the surg) they fell, they came back, I got stage IV cancer in '06 and had them removed...now I wish I'd had a little talk about: the whole nipple thing, although I have none and do not miss them. I had a cone scan and the tech had hers done...with little pinched flesh, that they pull up and tie off so they are ever-visible. Pueke!

IT IS NOT NORMAL FOR NIPPLES TO SEEP FLUID (like mine had done for 18 months or so prior to diagnosis.)

After cancer, I did not get re-constructive surgery.

I love my breastlessnes, but I get a negative charge when I see women with their boobs schlogging back and forth, nipples at the end of that (eeeeeewwww) watch out they don't burn on the stove or get caught in a drawer!

I see women who think their boobs are faboo and everyone needs/wants to see them, well: "not I" said the cat...what is it about boobs anyway? Why do women show them off?

Personally, I am sick and tired of seeing bubble boobs, sagging breasts and nipple-mania. If someone comes at me with a car and their headlights are on....it bugs me the same as this does with women...it bugs me yeah, yeah, yeah...it bugs me..yeah, yeah, yeah booooooooobs...

I also want to offer this info regarding breast health. I don't think braless is the answer, but rather: the prepared foods, the growth-hormones in our food (see little 8-9 year olds developing already) These little girls need a better example....than bragg'n and sagg'n well folks ...it is just not pretty. Ladies, I had large breasts and I know how they look with or wothout a bra and I can spot an augmentation a mile away....flat chest and big round (dumb-looking) balloons. I assure you, women. Do men like touching these? Get a strss-ball, ame diff. Just wondering...

On another note regarding men: yes, I have seen them do it...they look so confused (especially when you're still bald from treatment!) They look on their faces riminds me of: PAT. MAN OR WOMAN? ('70'-style SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!) It is humorous to me now...but they look so confused and disappointed. I literally saw men look at my breastlessness, my face, back to the breasts to make sure.

Women also give "the look":

"so glad it's not me" (they are thinking)

Pity looks, like, "what would I do, if that was me?"

I have prosthetics...but the best thing about them is taking them off! I never wear them, I took them from the clinic....because I was told I "should".

I really feel it makes people kinda uncomfortable, besides there is no breastless clothing line. One day when I wore them fake boobs) for a joke, my friend said, "oh, they make you look so feminine" gag me...how is feminine defined now anyway? Men paint their nails, have kitchy fashions and color their hair. Cross dressers may have on female clothing...but it does not mean that they are feminine now.

So here's my question: what about man-boobs? I don't hink anyone thinks this is very pretty...and so for equality sake ...neither a woman!

Thanks for the opportunity to comment...it is a pet peeve of mine. If you think about it, it's just fatty flesh...hell I got belly-fat and a large rib cage that looks like a una-boob...wanna see that? I didn't think so.. I think the BOOB -fetish is all nonsense, although I would NOT recommend underwires for larger breasts...and waterbras? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?
