Anyway...I now sell life insurance here in Michigan to put bread on the table. AND if you're thinking of doing the same thing, I hope you don't like "bread" all that much, because selling life insurance won't put much on the table!

The really weird thing about selling life insurance in Michigan, is that when people ask what I do for a living, as soon as I tell them, I notice a subtle but definite shift in their attitude towards me. I can see the radar go up and almost hear their thoughts "OH NO...a Life Insurance guy. Run! Run! Flee for your life."

I find this strange because, generally speaking, I am well liked...even if I do say so myself. My dog likes me anyway, and my wife seems to...at least she seems to pretend to. (just kidding, honey!)

What I have learned in the last couple of years is that the reason Life Insurance agents are so generally disliked is because of how pushy they are. When life insurance agents are learning their trade, they are told over and over by various mentors "it's a numbers game, the more people you can see, the more you're going to sell".

So the mentality of the life insurance agent becomes "just buy something...NOW!" Very few seem to do a needs analysis to really figure out what it is you actually are looking for in a life insurance policy.

I find this attitude strange simply by virtue of the fact that with most life insurance policies, if the client cancels within the first year of the policy, even longer in some cases, the life insurance agent is going to get hit with what's called a "chargeback". Meaning the life insurance agent is going to get "charged back" the commission they made on the initial sale.

So...if you encounter a life insurance agent who really tries to bully you into buying something and you want to teach him a lesson...buy a policy from him, wait about three months, then cancel it! There's no downside to you...you did actually have coverage for those three months, AND you had the satisfaction of knowing for a fact that you burned a real A**HOLE!
