Why you should “empty your cup”
70
Many years ago I read a wonderful book written by Robin Sharma, called “The monk who sold his Ferrari”. it was in this book that I first read the idea of how a full cup cannot take in anything new. That in order to learn more things, we must have an open mind, or empty out old outdated stuff from our minds, only then can we learn something new.
Let me ask you to do a very simple exercise as you read this, to show you how it is impossible to take in something new when we already have so much stuff inside us.
Draw in a breath, and now, hold on to that breath, don’t release it, and take in another breath and then another….impossible, isn’t it? That is how God created our bodies. He made sure that in order to take in a fresh breath, we must release the first one. It is the same with our stomachs. Imagine if you were to eat and eat everyday, without once emptying out your bowels. What would happen? There would certainly be a build up of toxins in your body, and you would eventually perish. Our bodies follow divine intelligence. Our lungs take in a certain amount of air, our body absorbs the oxygen it needs, and then the rest is expelled, and a fresh breath is taken in. Similarly with food, our bodies absorb the nutrients from the food we eat, and then the rest is eliminated. Our bodies have other filtering organs such as kidneys that also help in keeping the body clean, internally. Because if that did not happen, then as I already pointed out earlier, you are bound to perish.
So what makes us think our minds are any different from our bodies? Why do we assume that we can go on learning new things in life if we do not release old, outdated ideas and beliefs? Why is it that we feel that we are not creative enough?
Do you really think that you do empty your cup on a weekly or monthly basis if not daily? Many of us go through life, thinking we have an empty cup, but we only fool ourselves.
Think! How much do you hoard? Do you have a habit of storing old articles that you have not used in a long while? How about clothes? Are your wardrobes full of stuff you have not worn in a long time? Your garages, attics, basements and lofts, are they full of junk? Do you hoard money because you fear a lack of it? If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you have not emptied your cup truly. The amount of junk you have in your lives, is directly proportional to the amount of junk you have in your minds! So empty your cups.
Empty your cup so you can attract new things into your lives. The attitude of hoarding, or keeping makes you stagnate. It blocks the flow of prosperity. The empty cup follows the “principle of emptiness”. The emptiness creates a force within you, with which you attract, the vacuum with which you suck prosperity into your lives. This is essentially what the Tao Te Ching teaches.
So stop hoarding now! De-clutter your lives. For when you hoard, you send two messages to your brain, 1) that you do not trust tomorrow to bring you what you need and 2) that the new and the better are not for you.
But in order to attract prosperity- you MUST trust that tomorrow will be better than today, that is the only way to grow, if not you are going backwards. And in order to show the universe you are ready for prosperity, you must create room for it to arrive. You can only do this if you- Empty your cup everyday!

Thank you Jerilee, for taking time to stop and read. I also hope you did empty your cup today, in order to receive something new :)
Very inspirational. I definitely have to work harder at emptying my own cup. I have a lot of stuff that I carry around with me on a daily basis, some I don't even realise until someone jiggles the cup and things long buried come back to the surface. Giving it a good emptying once in a while would do wonders for me, and I'm sure it would do the same wonders for others!
Thanks for stopping by Ria.. and let me assure you- emptying your cup does work wonders!!
Thanks for this one. Just came upon it by chance. Even though I've heard so many empty the cup stories your article opened my mind.
