Why I am an Atheist
66I’m not trying to start an argument or offend anyone here, I just wanted to give a few reasons why I find it impossible to believe in God. I’m also not intending to make this specific to any religion, although I do have to refer to religion because it is a major contribution as to why I do not believe in God.
The Lure of Heaven
I’ve always perceived that people do things in God’s name, follow his commandments and abide by Jesus’ teachings because they hope to go to heaven or at least avoid going to hell. We are lured by rewards and perturbed by punishment. Pascal’s wager, in its simplest form, states that we’re better off living as God intended, behaving as he states, because if he does exist then our rewards will be infinite and if he doesn’t then we haven’t lost anything. If, however, you disobey him and he does exist then you are damned eternally. I’ve always thought that when you die that’s it … you’re dead, there is nothing else. It used to keep me awake at night when I was little, the thought that when I died there would just be nothingness for eternity. I just feel like I don’t need God or any notion of heaven to validate my time alive.
Furthermore, I’ve always thought it was kind of selfish that people do what God says because they want to go to heaven. When I do something good I’m not expecting some kind of reward or anything back from it. I don’t believe in karma either, although I wish I could. Good things won’t happen to me because I’ve done good things. Isn’t it better to do something good because it is the right thing and not because you want the rewards?

Disillusionment
As a kid I was brought up in a Jewish family. Not massively strict, but we had to follow the basic rules and there were lots of things that I couldn’t do that just seemed like normal things to do, for example, not eating meat and milk products together. It may not seem like a big deal but we had to check everything we bought from the shops, have separate cutlery and crockery for each and there’s just so much we couldn’t eat. There were lots of other things as well. But it basically boiled down to the fact that I had a miserable childhood/adolescence and had serious issues. I blamed a lot of it on religion and just came to the conclusion that all these rules were just pointless and stupid. Why would a God put such restrictions on a life that could otherwise have been a very happy life?
I’ve always thought that if there was a God he would understand that I am (on the whole) a good person. Most importantly because I don’t do things that will hurt others. I’m not a perfect person by any means and sometimes I do bad things. But no-one is perfect. I can’t believe that if there was a God he would be that conceited to insist that everyone must believe in him. If there was a heaven you would get there on the basis of how good a person you were and how you lived your life not on how you live your life given that you want to get into heaven.

I am a Christian. Not because I am afraid of God but because after carefully studying the life of Jesus I have decided His story is too compelling to be fiction; His person is too beautiful to be a mere man; the response to Him over the past 2000 years by billions of people has been the most supernatural event in human history.
But, I enjoyed reading your ideas and you seem like a plenty nice person. Thanks.
I'm glad you can enjoy it. Despite not believing in God I am still very interested in other peoples' opinions and reasons why they do. So thank you for sharing your thoughts too :D
Interesting Hub, Jen - Although I am a theist, I was atheist for many years, so understand your thoughts a little.
Nice to see that you have the most valuable thing of all - a keen and insightful mind. Always good to question and challenge what we know :)
Thanx Sufi! Its good that you can understand a little. I don't really expect theists to understand where I'm coming from, I just find it interesting to discuss and argue about religion, altho I'm always worried about offending people!
Thanx for your nice comments as always :D
Thanks for becoming a fan of mine first of all :) Decided to come check out your writing, and I thought this hub was very interesting. Especially since while I'm not an atheist, I agree with some of what you said (I also don't think people should do good deeds just for getting into heaven...good should be done based on its own merit). Keep up the good writing!
Like you for being an individual, just keep being you Jen !
Thank you so much. I really value all these positive comments!!!
have you read my brain? and my life's story?
Great hub... and I believe that everyone who questions, eventually gets an answer. Keep questioning lovingly.
Great hub, realy enjoyed how you approached your reasons, softly.Getting serious with you being outnumbered by believers, would have shown your still trying to prove why your right. Not just a few extra mild reasons why you think atheisticaly .Smart.Your new fan Chance,
Yep, it's a good hub. I spent 41 years as a non believer, so it's too early to say what will happen with you in the future, and I'm sorry that your folks kept the traditions of Judaism but did not explain why they kept them. I have many friends who have done the same thing, it's a shame, but it's what happens when you pass down the rules but not the reason.
Anyhow, keep hubbing, keep reading and remember your relationship with God started before you were born, and will continue after you die. Your decision is whether you have any relationship whilst you are alive. God will never force His attentions on you, He's a gentleman, so it's your choice.
No mention of Hell from me, in fact there was (is) no real concept of Hell in Judaism,or the Torah it was a Roman Catholic invention to keep the masses in order!
Stay Blessed and read Dueteronomy 28 (Devarim in Torah) to understand your birthright a mite more.
Being Jewish is not a religion, it is something far more significant than that.
Just realised how many comments I have on here that I haven't replied to. Sorry everyone!
@aguasilver - it's not that my parents didn't explain why they did what they did. I understand judaism, I understood that the rules were there because it said so in the Bible. I just thought they were stupid. I didn't think there was any mention of hell in the Bible. If nothing is gna happen to me if I don't believe in God, then I shouldnt have any worries ... most christians don't feel that way!
Most Christians don't read their bible and think! ;o)
I do believe there is a day of judgement (as Judaism does)and if you read any of my personal hubs, you'll understand that I was 'educated' in Judaism, before I became a humanist, before I came to faith in Yeshua.
I needed to work it out and have never been taught, I prefer to learn.
Anyhow, thanks, you are at least a civilised atheist and that makes a change in the forums!
I do actually work very hard at being a civilised atheist, thanx for noticing. I despair at people (religious and non) who are just rude to others in forums because at the end of the day the existence for God cannot be proved one way or the other and they don't want to accept that. Like i said (in the forum i think) I have respect for christians and other religious people if they have thought about their beliefs and why they believe them!
Well thought and well written. I understand how you feel.
I hope that many people can relate to what I've written, glad I'm not the only one.
Thanx Dao!!
Good hub, I feel the same way.
