Why Women Need Skills And Education

It is important for women to have an education

I live in an area that is both very Christian and very conservative. One of the things that I hear repeatedly from young women in college is that they really aren't interested in finishing, because they have only come to find a husband. And then they'll raise kids. And what is the point of getting an education or gaining some practical skills if they'll never use them?

This attitude violates the very principles of financial preparedness, as well as life preparedness. Just because you don't think that you will use something NOW (and I beg to differ; I use what I learned in college everyday to teach my son), doesn't mean you will never use it. And what happens if something happens to the man in your life? What if you get divorced? Working one minimum wage job will never support your family, and working two doesn't lend itself to much in terms of quality family time.

Getting an education doesn't have to mean a college degree

I have a friend who has an interest in photography. She didn't finish a college degree, but she has hopes for a small business, run out of her home (so that she can be with her kids), taking pictures. She bought a lighting kit on Ebay and some different colored sheets to use as backgrounds. Her photos look great. All she needs is two or three classes to hone her skills. Then she will be able to provide a little extra income for her family, and the ability to build up some savings. And she will establish herself. If anything happens to her husband, she will have a good reputation and be in a place to provide for her three children.

Getting an education doesn't always mean that you have to complete college. Developing a marketable skill is a big part of it. I work part time from home as a writer, and make enough to provide for my family while my husband finishes his Ph.D. I would not be in this position, with the opportunities I have working for a variety of publications, if I didn't have a degree in journalism.

It is important for women to gain some sort of marketable skill and/or education. Financial preparedness is about looking to the future and knowing that you can provide for yourself.

Good, practical article! I agree that not everyone must to go to college in order to be successful. I think that's one reason that we are see the rise in self-paced study programs and distance learning, as well as home schooling early on for children.

So true. It's all about using today's options to help you get to where you need to be. And there are several options available today. The main thing is to develop a marketable skill, and then find little things to keep it up, so it is usable when necessary. It is also important to learn about finances, and find a way to squirrel a little away for yourself.

I liked this article.University Degree is just one of the ways to measure your potential, but it does not reflece the actual skill set in any individul. So, passion for learning is the key in any field, studying for the sake of a DEGREE can not get you success.Thanks.

Good advice. Everyone should find their potential through whatever education and opportunities they can access. It is important to your sense of worth and and a way to keep you from being dependant. Independence is freedom.

I totally agree about the importance of education for women. When you educate a man, you educate one person, but when you educate a woman you are educating her children too and I agree too about the importance of having marketable skills. You never can tell what is going to happen to you in life and a woman needs to be prepared not only to care for herself but for her children as well. Good hub.
