Why do we HATE telemarketers?

PEOPLE love to buy but hate to be sold! Don't believe me? Go to Wal Mart or Target or the Mall on any Friday night or Saturday morning. What do you see? Hundreds, and in some cases, thousands of people with carts full of items doing one thing, BUYING.

But they are making the choice to buy and telemarketers seem to take that choice out of their hands. Imagine this; you come home from a hard day at the office, and turn on the television when the phone rings. You climb out of your recliner and stumble to the phone just to make it stop ringing and bam, it's Vinnie from Vacation Sales telling you he knows you need a vacation to Florida.

The fact of the matter is, you probably do need a discounted vacation somewhere, and given a little time and marination, you would have considered Vinnie's proposal. Especially if it's a good deal.

But you see, for Vinnie, he's got a sales quota to meet, and if he starts putting you to the screws to commit, he's going to make it. The pitch is great, you get a year to use the vacation, and it's about half the price of going it on your own, plus all you have to do is go to a Resort for one day to sit through a 90 minute presentation, and you still can use the pool, spa and other amenities.

But you don't want to be sold. Chances are, if you saw that same bid on an infomercial, you would call (IT works, check out Tahiti Village in Vegas, or Belle Vista in Arkansas). So you tell Vinnie your objection, "Not Interested."

Which really isn't true, you just don't want to hear it right now, over the phone. But it's not that simple to Vinnie. He has bills to pay, and you've just thrown up an objection, which he can overcome to "Sell" you. He's got a list of tools at his disposal, and to him, you're just playing hard to get. Free tickets. Another free trip. Free dinner. A bigger discount on an allready low price.

Ever wonder why a company will taint the lifeblood of it's business (sales) with a resentful customer who wants to buy but hates to be sold?

Because statistically, when buyer's remorse sets in, most people don't do anything about it. And they accept the status quo, which is if they don't use the DNC registry, they are going to get telemarketing calls. And with an ever shrinking pool of usable numbers, those calls will get more frequent, more desperate and more annoying.

Do we need telemarketers? It's a multi million dollar industry so it works. But at what price to the consumer and the companies that serve them?

BTW, I actually know Vinnie, and if you want to visit Orlando, shoot me an e-mail at lowrychris@gmail.com and I'll hook you up with a discounted vacation. It's cheap, and you will have to take the tour, but if you can say "No thanks" or if you are in the market for a time share, you absolutely can't beat the deal. And it's a great chance to illustrate to the industry that they can generate interest without bothering people on the telephone.
