How the Upper Class Got Filthy Rich

The rich have always gotten richer. It's a fact of American life. It is a truism of the Capitalist system. Since the beginning of civilized society, those who have money have always had an easier time making more and more of it, while the average plebeian struggles from paycheck to paycheck, just hoping to earn enough sheckles to keep a roof above his head and food on his table.

But recently, over the past twenty-five years especially, the wealth disparity between rich and poor has grown very large, bigger even than that giant rotten pumpkin which sits atop Rush Limbaugh's shoulders. Here are a few facts that should surprise those of you who continue to work harder and harder just to receive less and less. First, let's take a look at how a very small percentage of folks have been able to take control of most of the wealth in this world.

Bill Gates - The Richest Man in the World

1. The Number of Billionaires Has Exploded

In its annual list of the world's richest people, Forbes Magazine reported in 2007 that there are now 946 Billionaires in the world. That was up from just 868 members of the nine zero club in 2006. How many were there in 1990? How about 165. In 1980? There were only 35. Even adjusting for inflation, that increase is truly off the charts.

The average worth of these 946 super-wealthy folks is 3.6 billion, and their combined wealth is approximately $3.5 trillion.

That's right, the richest 900 people have a net worth that is nearly double the annual national budget of the United States of America, a country of 310 million people. Moreover, their combined wealth exceeds the GDP of 60% of the world's nations. Even the most staunch supporter of Capitalism would have to consider that a lot of money in the hands of so few people.

As said before, the rich have always gotten richer, but lately, especially over the past 25 years, the wealthy have gotten much much wealthier at an alarming rate. Which would be fine if the rest of the people who have worked hard and contributed to that newly created money were given an equal chance to share in the wealth. But they aren't. As this article will demonstrate, those at the top have spent the past quarter-century "rigging the game" to ensure that 95% of the new wealth created goes upwards to the very rich and the rest of the crumbs that fall from the baron's dinner tables must be split up by the rest of the slobs.

Here are more facts that, hopefully, will mobilize the middle and working classes to start fighting for what is rightfully theirs:

1. A minimum wage employee who works 40 hours a week makes $10,506 a year before taxes. It would take that employee approximately 7,000 years to make as much money as Oracle CEO Lawrence Ellison makes in just one year. Now Larry works his ass off and he has built an amazing company. He deserves a lot. A lot. But is there any reason that Larry needs to earn 7,000 times as much money as the guy who sweeps the floors at Oracle's headquarters? 7,000 times as much. If he earned only 1,000 times a much, Ellison would still be ridiculously wealth and at the same time, hundreds (or even thousands) of low-paid Oracle employees could rise above the poverty line.

2. 10 Former ENRON directors agreed to pay shareholders a $13 million settlement. Sounds good, right? It's not. That $13 million is just 10% of what those same admittedly crooked executives made by dumping Enron stock while lying to the average shareholders about the company's collapsing financial health.

3. CEO pay among military contractors has tripled since 2002. For David Brooks, the CEO of bulletproof vest maker DHB, it's risen 13,233%. Who says war doesn't pay?

4. Only the wealthiest 20% of Americans spend more on entertainment than on health care.

5. 20% of Americans spend 1/4 of their income on residential energy costs. No, we don't need alternatives to oil and natural gas, Noooooooo!!!

Larry Ellison's 454 Foot Yacht

How Did the Wealth Divide Get So Big?

So how did things get so bad over the past 25 years? Why are average Americans working more hours for less real pay? Even worse, why does it now take two parents to earn less than one parent earned just thirty years ago?

For example, in 1950, only 11% of families with chidren under 6 were two income families. By 1990, that number had grown to 53%. By 2005, it was at 73%. And yet, with two parents working, the overall quality of life (and real incomes) for working Americans has dropped, in a time when billionaires are growing like a twelve-year old Yao Ming.

Why have the number of billionaires exploded while the majority of the "rest of us" are working 125% more hours than our parents and still getting less return for our efforts. What is going on?

The basic reason is that high ranking executives (with the assistance of a series of Conservative Republican administrations) have taken numerous measures over the past 25 years to line their own coffers at the expense of their employees and those of the United States Treasury. They have done this in at least five ways:

1. Tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.

2. Refusal to Increase the minimum wage.

3. Outsourcing of good-paying jobs to India, China and Southeast Asia.

4. Unprecedented Increases in Executive Pay.

5. Encouraging Illegal Immigration and Employing Low Wage Illegals.

David Stockman - The Architect of Voodoo Economics

Tax Cuts for the Ultra Wealthy

Here is something that will make you laugh. When he ran for President in 1980, Ronald Reagan claimed that if the nation cut taxes (i.e cut income) while simultaneously increasing spending (especially military spending), we could pull the country out of the ongoing recession without falling into debt.

Do yourself a favor. Over the next four years, spend twice as much money as you earn. See if there is any type of magical synergistic effect that somehow results in a balanced budget. It's a hell of a lot more likely that you'll lose your home, car, credit cards and get chucked into a debtor's prison.

But that is exactly what the Reagan Administration did during the 1980s. The idea came from a then-33 year old economist named David Stockman, who claims that if you gave more money to the rich (whom he called the most productive people), they would spend it so wisely as to expand the overall economy, and eventually, the money given to these rich folks would trickle down to the masses. Reagan called it "trickle down economics." His opponent, the first George Bush, called it VooDoo Economics.

Reagan got elected and slashed taxes, mostly skewing his cuts in favor of the ultra wealthy individuals and corporations who had financed his campaign. To pay for these tax cuts and unprecedented spending on building weapons (many of which were given to Saddam Hussein in 1982 and then to Iran in 1986), Reagan became the first president to intentionally run annual budget deficits.

During his eight years, the rich got richer. When your tax rates drop by 40%, that tends to happen. Annual budget deficits, however, increased from $73 billion in 1980 to just over $300 billion when Reagan left the Presidency in 1989. The National Debt also rose dramatically: from just under $800 billion to more than $3 trillion during the Reagan years.

To further underscore that tax cuts for the wealthy do not lead to economic health for the nation or its workers, one need only look at the Clinton years and the George W. Bush presidencies.

Remember that when Bill Clinton came into office, he raised taxes on the richest Americans from 28% to 36% (and 39% in some cases). Guess what happened? Well, the $300 billion budget deficit in 1991 turned into a $236 billion budget surplus by the end of Clinton's term.

George W. Bush, that Cowboy from Connecticut, reversed all of the advances made by Cinton the minute he took office. Little George's cuts were even more blatant and egregious than Reagan's cuts. Bush gave the lion's share of cuts to the top 1% of U.S. citizens, and sent a $300 check to the average working stiff. Years later, Bush had wiped out the Clinton surpluses and replaced them with deficits, the lastest being a $480 billion shortfall for fiscal year 2007.

So, essentially, what happened is that the very, very wealthy banded together and paid to elect a "conservative" President, who in return gave these wealthy folks all of the money that the poorer people had paid into the Treasury. So, the rich got filthy rich, the Treasury got bankrupted and the little guy, as usual, got screwed.

Is there Another Great Depression Looming Ahead?

No Increase in Real Wages for American Workers

The minimum wage has actually dropped in terms of real numbers.

If the minimum wage had grown at the same percentage rate as CEO pay, the minimum pay would be $23.03 per hour. Instead, it is $5.15, and will rise to a whopping $5.85 on July 25, 2007.

Furthermore, the average income for a family of four (adjusting for inflation) has actually dropped since 1980.

When you don't pay your workers a fair wage and, therefore, get to keep more of the business' profits, that's what happens. Some people will respond: hey, it's the owner's business, he should be able to do what he wants! Really? Should he be able to hire illegal aliens just to keep costs down? Should he be allowed to ship entire successful industries, industries that formed the backbone of the American economy, overseas?

Read it, George!

The Outsourcing of High-Paying Jobs

Shipping Jobs Overseas

During the Clinton era in the 1990s, the most promising field for American workers was computer programming. From 1990 through 1999, during the heart of the computer and internet explosion, mainframe computer programmer's incomes raised from an average of $33,111 to just over $62,000 per year. More highly skilled workers who were well-schooled in internet programming, could earn well in excess of $125,000.

By 2001, however, the average pay of mainframe programmers had dropped from $62,000 to just under $45,000. Internet programmers saw an even more precipitous drop, down from six figures to just over $60,000.

What happened? Did computers go away? No. Did the internet disappear? Well, you are reading this article on the 'net, so obviously not.

Outsourcing consultant Michael Corbett says "off-shoring," otherwise known as the trend to send American jobs to low-wage centers like India and China, is now growing by 20 percent annually.

Corbett stated "I think we're really in the middle of a very fundamental transformation of business, of work, of careers," and went on to say "I think we need to assume it's going to be very painful."

So, why is this happening if it is so painful to the average American? Well, it's happening because automakers, software manufacturers and sneaker makers can get cheap, cheap labor in Mexico, China, Russia, and southeast Asia which enables those moguls to become even richer than they were a decade ago. To wit:

  • Phil Knight of sneaker manufacturer Nike, who has all of his sneaks made in Vietnam and Indonesia (average pay: 40 cents an hour), is now worth $7.4 billion.
  • Over the past thirty years, Ford Motors has cut over 50,000 jobs in America and relocated them to Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines. Ford CEO Alan Mulally was paid $39.1 million for his four months of work in 2006, while ex-auto workers look for work in the tire department of Wal-Mart.

Sharp Increase in Executive Pay

In 1978, the highest paid Chief Executive officer in America was David Mahoney of Norton Simon. He earned $2 million.

By 1988, the top executive now earned a whopping $40 million. Interestingly, that executive, Michael Eisner of Disney, as the Chairman of the Board of the Company, essentially decided for himself just how much he would be paid.

By 2000, the top executive pay belonged to Steve Jobs of Apple, who earned a total of $381 million.

Guess where that money came from? Regular schmucks like us.

Whose on Top Now?

Illegal Immigration

There are obviously a plethora of issues surrounding the ongoing federal debate concerning the 10 to 20 million immigrants who are in this nation illegally. But one fact is clear: the presence of illegals has held down real wages for both skilled and unskilled American workers.

Illegal immigrants work primarily in the construction, restaurant, landscaping and hospitality industries. In each of these industries, there has been an average decrease in real wages over the past quarter of a century. This is especialy true in the residential construction industry in Texas, Arizona and New Mexico, where illegals will work for as little as $5.00 per hour while skilled American carpenters, masons, roofers, and laborers used to command upwards of $20.00 to $30.00 per hour. Construction business owners, both large and small, thus have a strong incentive to hire the much cheaper illegals to save costs and ultimately increase their profit on jobs.

And the effect on American construction workers? Well, it starts with unemployment, which pays better than the wages that builders are willing to pay. After that, well, it can get worse. Why do you think there are a million black men in jail in this country? Could it have something to do with the fact that there are no decent paying jobs available to them because so many of those jobs have been taken by illegals? Many support that viewpoint.

The bottom line is this: American Capitalists have spent the past 400 years searching for one thing and only one thing: cheap labor and low taxes. When the Southern plantation owners enslaved Africans whom they did not have to pay, they became wealthy beyond anyone's dreams. When slavery was outlawed -- and these magnates had to actually pay workers -- many turned to employing children as young as six to work in their fields, factories, railroads and coal mines. That is how the Vanderbilts, the Morgans and the Rockefellers were able to build all of those 125 room mansions in Newport: on the backs of child labor.

Now, years after the advent of the child labor laws, minimum wage and hour regulations, and the unionization of most skilled trades, those seeking even greater weath have found a new source of cheap labor: illegal aliens.

One has to wonder how much longer this can go on without it causing the entire American middle and working classes to disappear entirely.

An argument in favor of communism if ever I saw one! ;)

(Kidding! And, seriously, I agree with you all the same.)

In response to Mr. What?????

First of all, jerkoff, I am not one to toot my own horn, like you obviously are, but I graduated top in my class from Penn Law School. Stupid lazy people don't do that. Secondly, I made a LOT of money practicing law and running a real estate investment company for the past 14 years, which has now alloweds me to do exactly what I want every day of my life.

So, if you are angry and bitter that I am in your socioeconomic class and still believe in a progressive tax system, then tough crap. It's people like you who will ultimately destroy America. You see, Mr. What, you could not have made that kind of money (if you really did) in any other country but America. If this nation goes bankrupt from spending too much while not taking in enough taxes from the the upper class, and if all of our middle class jobs go to other countries, or are usurped by illegal labor, then what will be left for the next generations?

Your kids won't have the opportunities to accomplish what you have.

I'm happy you made money in your life, but no matter what you think, you didn't do it alone.

WOW!!! I have to say to What???, you are one arrogant, obnoxious prick! Who cares how much money you've made, how much you've paid in taxes or how many hours you work a day! And, what gives you the right to call someone "lazy" or "stupid" because you may disagree with their point of view on a subject which is obviously the subject of much debate in this country? The beauty of living in America is that you are free to disagree with Mr. Ray and say so, but your self-aggrandizing post is just way, way out of line. What do you think your need to publicly ridicule James so harshly says about your pathetic life? You sound like one miserable, self-centered, insecure asshole. YOU ARE THE PROBLEM! Thanks for letting us all know.

James,

I have learned much from your research and agree wholeheartedly with your views. Many a great empire were built on slave and/or cheap labor. In our modern era, we must educate ourselves as much as possible about the goings-on of political/socio-economic corruption. I think, in large part, part of the problem is that the middle class either doesn't fight hard enough against corruption of this type or maybe we just don't care enough. I'm not saying we need to carry the torches to the steps of the monsters in Washington, but we MUST somehow create a pathway toward electing people in a "third party" without having the new guy come up with a couple hundred million to do so. As you said, it has always been easier for the rich to get richer. There have got to be many, many brilliant people in our country who are leaders educated in politics, warfare, economics, social issues, etc. but who have relatively little money compared to all the "Senator's Sons" who seem to coast into the upper echelons of politics. We must stick together. We must come up with a plan. I wish I were brilliant. I wish I had the answers. Gordon Gecco was wrong.

Wow, a big wow...I am still reeling trying to figure out how someone in the bottom 25% of income earners pays no taxes, gets all kinds of services and still can bitch about not getting enough of a "refund". How are the rich "stealing" all of these people's taxes? Could it be that folks like yourself who have achieved wealth through hard work, a little luck, and the blessing to be born in this country are getting a break on the tax noose that has been choking them?

James I appreciate that you have worked hard and found success, and it is your right to give as much of your wealth to those less inclined to work hard as you like. To those of us still struggling to accumulate wealth, does it make sense to crush us with overwhelming taxes and then tack an AMT on top. How about some incentive to keep working hard instead of falling into the trough of wanting another flat screen and HD DVD player for the trailer and complaining because you can't afford health insurance? Interesting piece.

Wow James, your article had some interesting, allbeit biased views interejected into it, but was sad to see that these types of reactions (using name calling and generalizations about class envy in your replies) are what's driving our country apart, rather than together. It's my view that we'll ALL be financial "serfs" of the New World Order once they're successful at completing the North American Union with the Amero in the next decade or so. For a different perspective on this whole issue, I recommend checking out my hub page titled, "The Morphing of America". It's a work in progress and I'll be adding more later.

Well, when you point out that those who got rich on the backs of children, or exploit workers by giving them less than "acceptable" wages in some way (Vanderbilts, Rockefellers, etc.), and then imply that this is true for all those "fat cats" of today who are billionaires, is, in my view, biased. There are many rich folks who are extremely philanthropic and provide a great deal of social support, so it would be only fair to at least mention them, don't you think?

Thanks for your compliments about my article on the NWO, but you should understand that it is also a fact that Bill Clinton (I suspect is someone you look up to based on your remarks in your article) is a Bilderberger. Are you aware of what their objective is and who they are? If you feel my article's points are good, then you'd be shocked at the answer to those questions. Most of the public doesn't know those answers because they are in total control of the mainstream media of today and there are members who are from both sides of the politcal spectrum. So, it's not a political ideaology thing.

I don't think we disagree.  I read your piece, and as I said, I thought it was fascinating.  And yes, there are many, many wealthy people who are quite charitable.  I have a few bucks, and I think it is my obligation as a human being to help those who don't.

My point is that we have had a shocking consolidation of business, banking, media, and political interests in this country, and the only thing driving it is a desire of those with money and power to hold onto and increase their wealth and status, and they have done so at the expense of the middle, working and poorer classes.

On Clinton, I think he did an okay job, but I agree with you that he perpetuated, and may have even furthered, the aforementioned business and political events. On the other hand, we had eight years of peace and prosperity, and that prosperity was very broad-based.  Which is exactly the opposite of what has occurred under Bush.

Neither party is in the right all the time.  And yes, I do agree that both parties have become to an extent tools used by moneyed interests. It's just that the Democrats weren't so blatant and unbelievably greedy about it.  In other words: I don't love Democrats or Clinton, but I do think the Democrats are (or at least were) the lesser of two evils.

I hope that makes sense.  We are talking about a lot of issues here, but they are all driven by the same interest: Greed.

If you want to start a third political party, I am with you. Just let me know.

Well, I'm north of the border and it's just as bad here. The wealthy drive the real estate markets up but not the average worker wages. Even according to the government a minimum wage salary is considered to be below the poverty line. That means even with working your ass off 7 days a week you still won't earn enough money to pay your rent, bills and develop savings. We live paycheck to paycheck.

It creates a vicious cycle because to elevate yourself out of poverty you need either an education, a trade or enough capital to start your own business. When you can't earn enough from a regular job to save the money to achieve those goals then you end up spinning your wheels.

And don't even get me started on how much tax we pay!

Not everyone has family who can pay for their education. Not everyone earns enough to qualify for a loan.

Post Secondary education is not free in North America. It's damn expensive. One thing I have always believed is that education should be free. You want people to elevate themselves out of poverty, then give them free education.

Minimum wages on this side of the world are a joke. In Australia where I grew up the current minimum wage is almost $14 per hour and most people earn way more than this.

When I compare living costs where I currently reside in Vancouver to where my brother lives in Sydney then expenses in Oz are only about 10-15% more. It boggles the mind. The average wage is double (sometimes triple) but living expenses only a fraction more expensive.

My sister-in-law who is a recent immigrant to Australia, with no university degree, working a regular job is earning $33 per hour. Does she work hard? Yes, but so do I and there is no hope of me earning that per hour in Canada for a regular job without a degree.

That is why I'm doing everything I can to try and pay off my debts so I can start my own business because that's the only way I will ever earn a decent paycheck. But trying to pay of debts when taxes are ridiculously high, rent is ever increasing and way overpriced, and wages are low makes it pretty damn difficult.

Now, I have no problem with people creating wealth for themselves. You work hard, you deserve it. But when that wealth impacts government policy, real estate prices and doesn't trickle down to the employees who work like crazy to create the wealth for their boss then that SUX!

And is just plain wrong.

I personally like the Ben & Jerry's model. The CEO's can only make 8 x more then the lowest paid employee. If the head honchos get paid more, everyone in the company gets paid more.

Also business owners always whine about paying higher wages. Saying they can't afford it. But what about profit sharing? The more successful your business, the more your employees get paid. I guarantee you employees would work way harder to create wealth for their boss if it meant more money in their pocket also.

What I have witnessed too many times are wealthy owners making truckloads of money off the sweat of their employees and paying the bare minimum that they have to. That's the general reality around here.

You nailed it James when you said it's all about GREED.

This doesn't surprise me. I live in the richest country in the world and I have watched as real wages drop over the past thirty years as those on top get richer and richer.

I am not advocating communism, but I think that unchecked capitalism is a joke. Small businesses need the tax breaks. I can't tell you how many good, hardworking people I know who have been driven out of business under Bush. See, they didn't get the tax cuts; only the huge corporations and people worth more than $20 million shared in the cuts. Now, we are in the midst of a serious slide.

While Ben and Jerry's model should be lauded in principle, eight times may be a little low for me. Again, I am not advocating communism of any sort. But, is there anything wrong with 50 times the lowest paid employee? Even 100 times would work. But here, we have CEOs and other top executives, who are getting tax breaks that stack the deck in their favor, make thousands of times the average worker wage. That's not democracy. It's just not.

People who defend Bush will say" go work somewhere else! Well, right now, the way the regime has changed things, there aren't many options for people, even people with good educations and skills. Look, government doesn't have a duty to make everybody equal, but when government has rigged the game so the biggest companies are encouraged (by tax breaks) to hire third world workers instead of American employees, that pisses me off.

In short, Globalization is just another word for Imperialism. It's morally bankrupt, economically unsound, and from a long-term perspective, national suicide.

Exactly! Small businesses in Canada get the shaft all the time too. The more employees you have the more you have to pay in taxes. That means logically even if you grow you don't make more money, sometimes you make less in net profit. Owners then choose to run their businesses short staffed to avoid the extra taxes and it's the employees who suffer.

It's a ridiculous system. Corporations get the tax breaks while the little people struggle.

This isn't right. And I'm not advocating communism either, even if I am pretty far left in political leanings. I just want the playing field level in regards to taxes so everyone has the opportunity to succeed.

And I want proper wages. I don't want to have my boss come in talking about how he just made 2 million dollars right after he cut staff wages across the board to a ridiculously low level. (This actually happened at my former work place.) What is wrong with people?

Where DID the myth originate that the financially rich Don't pay taxes or the right amount of taxes, etc...? Where? It is utter B./S.!!

end quote ==

I agree with you 110% - I pay MAJOR taxes in TWO countries, I pay so much tax I want to scream. WHY should wealthy ppl or middle class ppl be paying income tax AT ALL when it was instituted as a completely TEMPORARY thing in war time --

govt. saw just how big a cash cow it was so they could wallow in huge wages for themselves --seeing that the American ppl were Oh so willing to just lay down and take it - or rather lay down and PAY it - PAY a tax that is NON-CONSTITUTIONAL!!!!!

So why do the ppl continue to pay it? WHY??

The govt. has everyone convinced that they somehow have the HOLY RIGHT to take approximately 50-55% of YOUR income every year!!!!!! WOW - HOW do you people just - LIVE WITH THAT???

Yes, I live in a different country and I pay huge taxes in the USA as well, as I have a USA company. AT least where I AM, I know my tax money is going for great health care for ALL people to enjoy. NO FEE. It is Included in our way of living which is awesome. I have firmly decided that 2007 is the LAST year I will run an American company; WHY SHOULD I? I've been stupid is all I can say - paying taxes to a country I don't even live in...and even if there ARE any benefits from the taxes that I am unaware of - they can't come CLOSE to the amount of money I pay - and you ppl certainly do not give open-heart surgery (or ANY KIND of surgery) to ANYONE who needs it - for FREE; as it is built into a system that actually WORKS!!

\

It works SO well that Americans who can still afford to do it are moving abroad in droves!!!!

But in the USA, where do you see 1/2 of YOUR paychecks being spent?? where? Do you get free, uptodate heath care? Dentists and eye-glasses for yourselves or you CHILDREN?

DO you get free medication? Free help/aid in so many areas of life the list is endless. I watch the news, I SEE the people lined up to see those wonderful doctors who spend their weekends helping the *UNINSURED* for free - being so morally awesome--and the line never ends....as so many of you don't or CAN'T get health care when you need it most - you have to mortgage your HOMES to get surgery? Do you not see a HUGE problem with that?????

Are you not ANGRY!?!?! Geeezzzz.

Now you are in *the war that never ends* and remember this as I do!---->

GW Bush said in one of his VERY first campaign speechs and I quote.

"We are NOT the worlds police!"

And I recall vividly thinking that was a great thing to say - to stand up for; and so what did he immediately do even b4 911 - THE EXACT OPPOSITE and more if that is even possible.

You know, this hub has me so confused as to where the american publics heads are at I am going to make a hub of my own COMMENTS.

Wake up! IT'S TOO LATE FOR YOUR COUNTRY BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO STAY A PART OF IT.

MOVE WHILE YOU STILL CAN!

America as it has been known IS OVER. DONE. Cappott.

And there is NO WAY anyone can LIE the way out of it. It simply utterly isn't possible anymore.

Great hub James. why haven't I noticed you before :-)

Anyway, it's much the same in Australia where the average working person is going backwards, and the norm for couples is to pay outrageous costs in childcare, so that both can go to work to pay for the privilege of just existing in our crazy society.

A society that has counted on virtually unlimited cheap energy. Well, the chickens are really coming home to roost on that one.

We've been badly conned. And for the last hundred years or so we have been building the wrong kind of world to pass on to our children.

Oh well, at least we have a federally funded health care system in Australia. It has its problems, but at least it's there.

Thanks Eric. As you can see, a lot of people miss the point of this article. It seems that American attention span lasts all of three seconds nowawadays. People here "taxes" and they imeediately scream at me because they think pay too much. But they aren't the people I am talking about. I doubt that a lot of people with net worths exceeding $100 million are reading little old me. You say "Stop the War" and are imediately branded a "liberal whacko" or "someone who hates America." It's a bummer. Thanks.

Private Eye: You seem to have missed the point of the Hub.  Anyway, regardless of what my point was, is your advice to the rest of us is to simply up and move?  To give up a country that my ancestors fought and died for?  No thank you.  I would rather try to fix the problems we have instead of running away from my homeland.  That is, unless GWB somehow figures out a way to get 4 more years.

Back to my point: I am not talking about people who make a good living; i.e., in the $100,000 to $500,000 per year range.  We get screwed on taxes (yes, 50%-55% when it's all said and done.)  I am talking about people like my CEO and CFO clients, people who earn over $5 million per year and yes, they pay much less on a percentage basis than I pay.  Republicans tell me that money will trickle down into the general economy; but it seems that the money is "trickling out" to people like you, who really choose to "cut and run."

Stay and fight the good fight, private eye.  I am down on America too, but we can fix it.  We were well on our way before this crew of jackasses took over eight years ago.
