technology has become a very powerful tool world-wide paving the way for a
ground breaking new, highly convenient, way of making phone calls using wifi
VoIP phones. As financial issues arrive, forcing many into economic hardship,
we find that free is good and yet so hard to find. That is why making free
phone calls using VoIP is certainly something to get excited about.
Though the use of VoIP to make phone calls has been in use for some time, there
were pitfalls to the service, the most important being that callers were
limited to their computer. Manufacturers quickly went to work, implementing
their know how to create what are known as WiFi phones so that callers could feel
free to roam while they talk on the phone to friends and family.

The wifi phone looks much like a cell phone and transmits frequencies like a

802.11b/g technology which the cell phone and LAN line phone do neither.
When you use a WiFi phone, you are still using your computer to make the
initial phone call but it is the phone that sends the signal to your router and
then to your computer so that the computer is able to connect the call. The
computer sends the information about the call back to the phone so that when
you turn it on, you are able to hear a dial tone, dial in your number and make
your phone calls.
VoIP phone calls are broken down into bits of data. Whenever you are speaking
on the phone, your voice is sent out as data to the computer and onto whomever
you are speaking with. If you have ever experienced a VoIP phone call, it works
just the same only with the convenience of an actual phone in your hand.
Since
there are program which are specifically designed enabling you to use VoIP
technology, many manufacturers have designed WiFi phones to use those certain
programs such as the previously mentioned Skype calling. Vonage is another
popular VoIP phone service.
When you purchase a WiFi phone from companies such as Netgear, Linksys, ZyXEL
and a few others, they may explain to you that they work with certain companies
like Skype and Vonage or at least similar to the two. If that is the case, you
will have to open an account with the provider and have your phone configured
so that it is capable of calling within that network. Not all wireless phones
require you to have an account or a certain program in order to use them by
enabling you to use an open protocol from just about any location.
Wireless technology has made the world a very convenient place to live in for
everyone by using radio waves to send and receive thousands of packets of
information in a very short amount of time. There are WiFi hotspots available
all over the world, enabling people to use various tools such as laptops, cell
phones, PDA's and even VoIP WiFI telephones. This means you can travel as you
please and still make free or low cost phone calls to friends and family.
A
wireless router connects multiple devices to the internet at once. This means
that you can run your computer or laptop at the same time that you are using
your WiFi phone. The router decodes the bits of information so that it can then
be sent to the Internet. The Internet responds to this information so that you
can happily go about your business. The speed in which this information moves
is so fast that most people fail to notice.
The frequency used for carrying data from the WiFi phone to the router runs at
2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. This is because the higher a frequency, the more information
a signal can carry back and forth. As far as 802.11 technology, 802.11b runs
the least amount of data at only 2.4 GHz. 802.11g is one of the most popularly
used technologies because it is slightly faster than g and still nearly as
cheap.
802.11a is considered a very fast frequency and becoming just as popular as
802.11b as well as 802.11g due to the fact that it is quite a bit faster than
b/g frequencies but it is also slightly more expensive. 802.11n is the fastest,
and newest, wireless technology available moving large amounts of data per
second with few interruptions.
Not
everyone is hooked on wireless phone calls as a form of communication and
without a decent sized network of contacts within the VoIP community, it would
be more practical to stick to typical land line or cell phone calls, though
spreading the good news of WiFi phone technology would benefit, not only you,
friends and family as well.
The fact that WiFi phones are capable of picking up hotspots does not exactly
bode well just yet either unless the phone has a browser since some WiFi
locations require this in order for you to gain access to them. Since you are
constantly moving, your wireless network would constantly be changing as well
and your phone would have to adjust to the change of network causing too many
pauses and interruptions.
If all the few kinks of VoIP WiFi phone technology can be ironed out, it will
end up being a new fad that will take the globe by storm. People will realize
the benefits, sign up to the net work and start calling those they know for the
wonderful price of free. Until then, it is still a very useful tool, even with
the kinks. Especially if you do know a lot of people on the VoIP network which
then makes this the perfect way of communication for someone like you.
