Nintendo Wii History
Here's a brief history behind the Nintendo Wii game console and its concept. Back in 2001, Nintendo's major video game system was the Nintendo Gamecube. At the time the Gamecube was being marketed and released, the Wii was already in development. The creative team and designers decided that the console didn't need to have the powerful gaming compatibilities of its two main competitors, Sony's Playstation 3 or Microsoft's Xbox 360. Instead, Nintendo introduced a revolutionary type of controller with its Wii console. This controller was said to be based on the look of the interface of the portable Nintendo DS system. It features a wireless remote that when aimed at the screen controls the action. Players can do everything from swing a tennis racket, swing a baseball bat, pitch a baseball, swing a ninja sword or go bowling.
Originally, the Wii was known as the "Revolution", but Nintendo decided to go with something short and simple that was easy to pronounce. Wii has stuck, and its original commercials used the play on words since "Wii" sounds just like "We". The Wii saw its official launch in the United States on November 19, 2006 carrying an original price of $249.99. It made its debut in the United Kingdom on December 8, 2006. The Nintendo Wii has had higher sales of its console than either Xbox 360 or the Playstation 3 since its launch.
Nintendo Wii Tech Specs & Features
Here are some key features and technical specifications about the Nintendo Wii Game console.
- The Wii gaming console stands upright at just over 6 inches tall and almost 1.75 inches wide. It's Nintendo's smallest home game console to date, and also the lightweight of the three major consoles (Xbox 360, PS3) since it weighs in at just under 3 pounds!
- Wii video games come in the format of 12 centimeter Wii Optical discs which load into the vertical game slot. Additionally, 8 centimeter Nintendo GameCube discs will work as well.
- The Wii features two processors, a 729 megahertz PowerPC-based "Broadway" processor (by IBM) and a ATI "Hollywood" GPU.
- As for memory, the Wii has 512 megabytes internally, as well as a slot for an SD card for external storage. The external storage can be used to save game data as well as upload photos and other items onto the Wii. Certain games like Excite Truck also allow MP3 music to be used from the external SD card during in-game play.
- There's slots for four Wii game remote controllers on the console which connect wirelessly via Bluetooth technology. Additionally, GameCube controllers can be used and there are 4 slots for those as well as 2 GameCube memory card slots.
- The Wii has component, composite and S-video output ports, and is compatible with an optional Ethernet LAN adaptor.
- Audio for the Nintendo Wii console is in Stereo as it is Dolby Pro Logic II-capable.
- Overall the Wii consumes just 18 watts of power when it's switched on, and 1.3 watts in standby mode.

- Sony's New PS3 Slim Playstation 3 for $299!
The big news heard round the world which eminated from GameCom is that the Sony PS3 Slim video game console will be a reality. It's scheduled to hit shelves next month and is already available for pre-orders at a lower price than the original. The new Playstation 3 unit features a much smaller size (about 35% smaller) than the original PS3's. It includes the standard Wi-Fi, Blu-Ray player and a 120 gig hard drive storage unit, so you can watch DVD's, play CD's and store other media files. Video gamers have already started buzzing about this hot new Sony PS3 slim game console, which will be competitively priced at just $299, which is $100 less than the original PS3's were. With that, Sony will be doing a price drop to reduce the price of all PS3's, and try to phase out the older units at $299. But who will want the old when the new is so much slicker cooler and smaller? It also is quieter and consumes less energy. There will be a new 3.0 firmware upgrade for it, also coming soon. Well worth the wait and the money...Only problem is it seems this ps3 slim is not backwards compatible. Oh well, we can't get everything in a video game system....yet! - Nintendo Wii recall for Battery Recharger
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recent Wii recall. The recall is for the Psyclone Essentials and React Wii™ 4-Dock Battery Recharge Stations, which are distributed by Griffin International Cos., Inc. These charging stations were sold from January 2008 through July 2009 by Amazon.com, Target, Toys R Us and Best Buy for about $50. Apparently the battery recharger stations have resulted in overheating problems which can pose a burn hazard. There's been at least six reports of overheating, two of which lead to minor hand burns. If you experience a burn, you should contact CPSC as soon as possible to report it. To determine if your Wii battery recharging station is part of the Wii recall, check for the company name "Psyclone" or "React" on your particular item. These will have model numbers PSE6501 and RT530 respectively on the bottom of the unit. If you determine you have a faulty recharger eligible for the recall, stop using the item and unplug it immediately. You can also do any of the following to find out how to return the product for a free replacement: Call Griffin toll free at: 888-344-4702 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT Monday-Friday Email productsafety@psyclonegamer.com Visit this site: www.psyclonegamer.com/Wii4Dock for more information. - Heidi Klum Guitar Hero Ad You Didn't See!
You've seen the Guitar Hero ads running amok all over television. One of the latest ads features sports stars Alex Rodriguez, Tony Hawk, Michael Phelps and Kobe Bryant rockin' out as a group in the living room. One of the original Guitar Hero World Tour ads featured supermodel Heidi Klum wearing a long shirt which drops right below her waist ala Tom Cruise in "Risky Business". Below you'll find the "Director's Cut" version of Klum's ad which never made the air. If it did, Guitar Hero might be selling way more copies, but they're doing quite alright... In case you're wondering, other ads in the GH series feature American Idol finalists from last season David Archuletta and David Cook, as well as Corbin Bleu. Most of all the ads can be seen over at YouTube as well as random people's attempts to impersonate the ads. Wii Video Games page on Squidoo!
