Will Tim Tebow translate to the NFL?
58The best college player ever is between positions in the NFL
Florida quarterback Tim Tebow is about to begin a campaign for a third BCS National Championship and a second Heisman Trophy. Unfortunately I'm not convinced his game is going to be as legendary on Sundays.
The Gators run the spread offense, which does not use a traditional pocket passer. It essentially uses a running back as the QB. Tebow is very good at that position, he has run for 43 touchdowns and more than 2,000 yards in three years at Florida.
He also has thrown for 67 touchdowns and nearly 6,400 yards. Unfortunately, it is not the type of game pro scouts want. NFL defenses are too fast to run an offense like the spread. No basketball pass plays on the goal line are going to work.
Former West Virginia QB Pat White, who also thrived in a spread offense, already is working to prove the spread will not be the end of his QB career. After being drafted by the Dolphins, the new kings of the Wildcat offense, White has not risen high on the QB depth chart, according to Fanhouse.com, and is behind traditional passers Chad Henne and Chad Pennington.
Florida's offense is not using the pass enough to impress the scouts. This year's No. 1 NFL draft pick, Matthew Stafford of Georgia, threw nearly 100 more passes than Tebow last season and had about 50 more completions. That translated into nearly 700 more passing yards.
While spread offense QBs like Tebow and White may be useful in certain situations, the league's fundamentals for the position have not changed much in the last two decades. He will have to drop back and make a strong throw more often than not.
I expect Tebow to be converted to a running back or tight end in the NFL. And if he is stubborn and insists on playing quarterback, he likely will find himself on the bench. Or he could suffer the fate of Eric Crouch, who is now out of the league.
Unfortunately, being a winner and a great person in college may not be enough to be a good NFL quarterback.

I'm a whole hearted Gator fan and will say that you are exactly right. Tebow is a fantastic COLLEGE qb, but the NFL likes the drop back and pass style qb. I think Tebow will be a great running back or tight end in the NFL. Given his questionable draft position last year which lead to his decision to stay at Florida for his senior year, I think he knows he probably won't be an NFL qb.
