Here Are The Reasons I Doubt McCain.

OK, some of the things shown in these video clips may be over the top, but I have serious and grave doubts that John McCain would make a good president, much less a great president. And to be fair, I also have doubts about Obama in this same respect. But this hub is about John McCain and his past - a record that seldom gets mentioned.

Personally, I have yet to come to grips with many of the unmentioned things he has done in the past. I have come to appreciate why many far-Right wing Republicans do not support him. He is, after all, anathema to their beliefs of where America should be heading.

That said, McCain seems Hell-bent on appeasing the far right wing of the Republican party, to which he has quite literally bent over backwards to prove that he is "their man". He has changed his past potitions to agree with the religious conservatives, to make their agenda match his own. I am convinced that he really is beginning to agree with many of the farthest right conservatives that America needs to become more of a throcracy, replacing the 'Republican Democracy' we now enjoy. (Yes, we are a republic and a democracy.)

However, McCain has a past, and much of it has, for whatever reasons, been ignored in this presidential go-around. While people debate Obam's religion, his pastor, his wife and his ideas, few, if any, mention that McCain is a seriously flawed candidate with his need to come out honestly about his uncertain past.

I believe that he has been given pretty much a free-ride based upon his military past, yet I think that he should be held to task, just as any other candidate needs to be. I also have come to doubt that he was the military hero people make him out to be. Yes, he was captured and tortured, and that is something I feel for him, nut why did he get shot down? There are some who claim he was "hot-dogging", as they allege he was often known to do.

Hopefully these videos will open up some of the things that McCain should be honest and open about. Whether you support him or not, do not be fooled into thinking that he is the hero, and that Obama is the enemy.

Neither candidate is a saint, but I think we, as Americans, need to know our candidates, warts and all. For example, Bill Clinton and John Edwards cheated on their wives and the Republican attack machine (similar to the Democratic attack machine in purpose) has attacked them both as vehemently as if theywere on a religious crusade.

However - Did we know that John McCain did the same thing? Why isn't that out there for us to see? He admitted cheating on his first wife with his next wife Cindy.

In 2000 McCain was attacked by George Bush's attack machine. Just before the South Carolina primary Karl Rove and his attack machine headed up by Charlie Condon asked in a phone survey if South Caroline voters would vote for McCain if they knew he had an "illegitimate black child." This was an obvious attempt to use racism to influence an election. (And yes, this is the same Karl Rove fawned over by and featured on FOX News!)

Now, in 2008, McCain hired the very same Charlie Condon (who trashed his adopted daughter) to be on his campaign!

Well, judge for yourselves. And caveat emptor!

Actually I am still on the fence as to whether I will vote for Obama or not. I probably won't make that decision until election day.

However, I am finding out and remembering things about McCain that pretty much rule him out in my book. Obama is, to put this in cliche form, the devil I understand, but McCain is the devil of whom I know better. And knowing of McCain's past, I find it difficult to match the John McCain of 2008 with the image he is trying to fabricate for himself.

Unfortunately, I have found, in politics, we often have to chose the person who represents the lesser of two evils. I had briefly supported McCain early in 1999-2000, especially when Bush and his attack squads ambushed McCain in South Carolina.

But McCain was a different candidate back then, in my opinion, than he is now. I find that he is getting much too cozy with people I simply do not trust, many of them being far-Right wing religious zealots.

I would like to see a more or less fiscally conservative but a more or less socailly liberal candidate. Libertarians come pretty close to what I see as a viable alternative, being more or less hands-off on the social issues while presenting what I believe to be some sound ideas fiscally.

But historically Libertarians do not do well at all in elections and are forever seeking the top offices at the expense of building up a base of their own.

Thanks for doing the research, Chef Jeff. I learned a few things here. McCain may try to "distance himself" from Dubya, but actions speak louder than words. He backs Bush on just about everything, including two of his most egregious "mistakes", preemptive wars and tax cuts for the rich -- although, to me, a mistake is something you do unintentionally, not on purpose. If Americans elect John McCain, they will deserve what they get. The videos tell the story.

Thanks, William and Fishskinfreak2008.  I think we are at a pivotal point in the history of our nation and the decisions we make this fall have the potential to either make or break us as a country.

We often forget that no nation lasts forever.  Only the nations which embrace freedom and positive change deserve to live, because those that chose to try to be the most powerful at any cost lose to others who come to hate them and seek to destroy them.

I fear that what Bush and his crowd have done can't be undone, and if that is true, then we may well be at the zenith of our existence as a nation.  We have set out on a path to be the most feared nation on Earth, and we have come to think that we are perfect. Thus the chest thumping and "God Bless America" and other things we continually shout out loud to make us believe it is true simply because we say it is.

But for all our shouting and self-delusion, we are doomed if we do not honestly face our mistakes and learn from them.  Only a fool believes he or she is beyond the need for self-reflection and humility.

We are not the people we think we are, and nobody ever has lived up to their own inflated ego and self-image. That said, we can love our country, as I do, but we need to realize as a nation that healthy self-criticism is a good thing, not the act of traitors and "un-American" Liberals.

Unfortunately there are those out there who decry that anyone who says America could be better is somehow a fool, a Liberal and a traitor.

Hey Chef Jeff,

I hear the author, David Freddoso, who helped bring down Kerry with Unfit for Command" is now marketing his new book intended to ruin Obama's reputation. Is this all Republican hype and why do people choose to believe the worst? Thanks for all your research.

I have been reading Scott McClellan's book "What Happened" and in it he points out that the Bush administration has gone into full continuous campaign mode, which means they will reach out and slap someone whenever that someone says anything critical of them

I fear that McCain has latched on to some of the same operatives who propelled Bush's campaign past the truth with such impunity.

This is not to say the Democrats haven't used the same tactics.  It has, indeed, and sadly, become a part of the Washington culture of politics.  Yet men like Rove have created a feeding frenzy atmosphere in which you and I and all Americans are being fooled into believing lies and all sorts of things that are patently false about the people we are going to have to chose for our leaders.

The worst thing is that we just keep on falling for the same old trick. There is a bit of common wisdom that claims that only the insane will constantly do the same thing over and over and expect a different result.

Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, I must be a voter.

I think, if the election takes place, we are simply faced with choosing what manner of execution we prefer. Our choices are a relatively fast demise in the electric chair with McCain or a slower, more lingering end from a lethal injection with Obama. I have come to the conclusion that it really doesn’t matter what happens in November. We can have martial law with a Cheney/Bush dictatorship or a bogus election which will give us the final destruction of the country sooner or later depending on the “winner”. Either way the country is done. Without a complete change in the way we live and think there is no future worth anticipating.

Our government has already been overthrown. I have resisted this thought as long as possible. After all my years of seeking peace I may be forced to take up arms.

I actually had planned a hub on that very subject, so I thank you for the encouragement! Phil Graham already angers me without my having yet written the hub!

I had hoped that McCain would truly be a break with Bush but it appears that this is what he must do in order to win. Just as Bush claimed he would be a fresh breeze after all the fun with Bill Clinton & the scandals, real or otherwise that surrounded his presidency, McCain seems bound and determined to make the same errors Bush has been making.

I would have hoped they would cease and desist in order to allow our nation to regain its former sense of self-worth, but I guess those rich boys with the agendas just have to try to fool us all once more!

You know, it's no sin to to be wealthy, but it is a sin to have more money than brains, and I am afraid the crew running the Republican Party these days just wants to make more money while the rest of us are buried beneath their garbage.
