What will happen in December 2012?
2012, and in particular the Winter Solstice of 21 December of that year, has become a subject of debate with many people thinking of it as some sort of doomsday or end of the world. Others see it as the end of an age or merely the last date at the end of the Mayan calendar, which is where the whole idea appears to have started.
Some people are looking forward to it in the hopes of "the rapture" taking place then or even for the whole planet to be moved up a frequency into the "4th density."
José Argüelles, who is now known as Valum Votan, is one of the main people who have brought the date of 2012 to the attention of the world. He is an author, an artist, a visionary and an educator, and has held the role of professor at many colleges including Princeton University, University of California Davis, San Francisco State University, the University of Colorado and the Union Graduate School.
Books by Argüelles include the best seller, The Mayan Factor, Surfers of the Zuvuya and the recently published Time and the Technosphere: The Law of Time in Human Affairs. He believes that the world is in the terrible state it is in because we have been using the wrong calendar and are consequently out of sync with the rest of the cosmos.
Because the end of the cycle of the Mayan calendar we are in is in the year 2012, in order to survive, Argüelles advises that the world needs to return to natural time, and very soon or face the consequences.
He has explained that the time this calendar shift needs to be made in is from July 26, 2004 through July 26, 2012, and he is calling upon the people of the world to reject the current calendar and begin using the natural time Thirteen Moon 28-day calendar once again.
José Argüelles was honoured on March 3, 2002 as "Valum Votan, Closer of the Cycle" by Nine Indigenous Elders on the top of the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan, where he was presented with a ceremonial staff for his efforts in helping to wake humanity up to the reality and understanding of 2012.
On the website http://www.earthportals.com/Portal_Messenger/votan.html in his new identity as Valum Votan he says:
"As Valum Votan, I am closer of the cycle. What does this mean? I complete the prophecy cycle of Pacal Votan and Quetzalcoatl which defines the year 2012 as the conclusion of a schedule of historic and evolutionary cycles. How? My purpose is to further the cause of the Earth and her biosphere by calling for a return of the deviant human species to the correct cycles of the natural galactic order. To this end I am committed to the universal dissemination of the Law of Time and all of its fourth- dimensional learning tools, including: the Thirteen Moon Calendar; Dreamspell, the Journey of Timeship Earth 2013; The Telektonon of Pacal Votan; and The 20 Tablets of the Law of Time."
Another author, philosopher and visionary who has said a lot about 2012 is the late Terence McKenna (November 16, 1946 - April 3, 2000) who perhaps became most famous for his collaboration Re:Evolution with the psychedelic dance music band The Shamen, as a track on their hit album Boss Drum.
On the Art Bell radio show of 5/22/97 McKenna said:
"There is only one point in the entire cycle where ... the universe is actually evolving some kind of process of self-metamorphosis, and human beings indicate that we have crossed some boundary into some new era, a new epoch of ever greater acceleration into this process of self-revelation. ... that point occurs on this solstice date in 2012".
Conspiracy theorist and author David Icke not surprisingly has had plenty to say about 2012 as well. In his latest book - The David Icke Guide to the Global Conspiracy (and how to end it) - he says "Another theme to be aware of is the gathering obsession with the year 2012. This is destined to become near-hysteria as that date approaches."
Icke thinks it is to do with "a process of transformation" and he adds: "...but I say 2012 is a ‘window' of change, not a year, day or hour when everything suddenly flips."
Alternative historian and author Michael Tsarion in Atlantis, Alien Visitation & Genetic Manipulation says: "The ancient Mayan calendar ended at the year 2012 and some scholars have forecasted this date as the end of the world. Indeed, the way things are going, it could be. But more likely, it will be the world as we have known it that comes to an end."
Personally, I like to agree with Tsarion's last sentence above, although it is quite possible that nothing spectacular will happen and we will all wake up finding our lives much the same as they were the day before. But only time will tell and we will just have to wait and see. It's only just over four years left to go.

I'm not sure it is possible for any person to predict the exact date of the end of the world. Life will continue on . . . until it doesn't.
Interesting!! I believe in 1983 or 84 when I was a teenager which is a handful of moons ago, they were saying the same similiar thing when the planets lined up. Nothing happened, but I remember hanging out with my friends in anticipation. As for Decemeber 2012 I agree with you as we will all still be here.:) As nobody wil ever know what time, day , or hour but some will try to figure it out.

Maybe the Mayan calendar went so far ahead that 2012 as so far out oif reach and they just stopped there.
Microsoft have Outlook beyond December 21st 2012 so maybe we shouldn't worry too much! Seriously, they must have an end date to that and maybe the Mayans ran out of programming space?

I'm not holding my breath - but I'm sure you wouldn't expect me to! Here, we're on a 12 moon (Islamic) calendar. I quite like the lunar calendar, because it gives a raison d'etre to each month, and of course you can track the progress of the month from the phase of the moon. It also has the interesting effect (because 12 lunar months are 10 days less than a solar year) of bringing, say, Ramadan towards you, weather wise, by 10 days a year. Because like it or not, the 4-season year on Earth really is a solar year. A 13 moon year would reverse and increase this effect, as the difference would be about +19 instead of -10 days.

I got a load of info from her but it was too complicated for me although I like the idea in principle. I even found out my galactic signature but I have forgotten it and can't find the papers it was in!
Bard of Ely, interesting hub. I knew a lot of people who thought the world would end in the year 2000, and though it didn't, my father died that year, so my world did change... I think it's sad that the lunar calendar and the solar one don't match perfectly. I think that would be an ideal situation -- and if it were true, it would be proof that we lived in the best of all possible worlds!

I think we were supposed to live in "the best of all possible worlds" but something went very badly wrong long ago that depending on what you believe the origins of evil are, threw everything well off course. Because of all the terrible things that have gone on and the current state of the world it is not surprising that people are looking forward to "the rapture" or being upgraded to another density. I like to think that one day the planet will be the paradise it was meant to be but who knows? Is it all wishful thinking? I sincerely hope not!

I've never heard of the 2012 prediction before, and I suspect that if the world is to end, then, as you say, it will be a matter of the world as we know it coming to an end. If it does turn out to be in the physical sense, then I hope it's quick!

My understanding of the "end" of the Mayan calendar is that an era is supposed to end, not the world. Changes come one after another, and I don't know if the Mayans were wise enough to see that far into the future to pick a certain date in time. I beliee that time was viewed much differently by them than it is by us, so dates may not even be part of the equation in this matter.
If the Mayans were that knowledgeable, or if they were somehow inspired by beings wiser than we may ever be, then perhaps we can expect change to start before that year, before on that date.
My calendar ends on December 31st of each year and yet the world is not dependent upon that for its existence. I mention this only because the Mayan calendar is a very complex thing, and may hold secrets, but maybe it just restarts, as does our current 11 year calendar, often called the perpetual calendar, and the Mayans planned for that.
After all, their calendar was not meant to denote what day we go to market or work and what day we rest, but rather, events and things to watch for as certain time-dates came closer.
Also, I actually believe that time itself was not as important as were the signposts they would see as the river of time moved on. They were, it seems to me, watching for omens, not specific dates; eras, not exact moments. In other words, things would occur over a specific time span, not necessarily at a specific moment in time.
While I remain open minded about many things, including this, I am also skeptical that the world will end, either physically or emotionally, on that date. If it does, I shall greet it and try to go on. After all, a change for the better would be a great and glorious thing about now!
So, let's hope the Winter Soltice in the common year 2012 brings in a new era of love, peace and hope. Or, perhaps as the Mayans might view it, let's hope that the process, the cycle, begins before then and culminates around that time.

I think the things going on in the US economy will soon spread outward to the rest of the world. That's my prediction. Things have to fall for them to change. It's a little scary, but I always remind myself to make no decisions out of desparation. I suppose we will just have to wait and see where we end up. We may just have to go back to simpler ways because there is no other choice. Will we make a different choice this time than the last time we trudged through this era. Time is just a spiril.

Unless we are really not here in the first place and this is all just a dream, bad or good. LOL I had a college professor that made us discuss "Are we real, or do we just think we are...." We all argued the point all semester. At the end of the semester...he bothered us even more by stating: "Either way, what difference does it really make?" You just do what you can do...and let the universe do what it does. LOL

As a child in 1963, I heard the Egyptian prediction in a history unit of the end of the world being 2020. A passageway of predictive tiumeline marks in the Great Pyramid was reportedly fund around 1950 to furnish the LAST mark at 2012! Then there was a blank line until 2020, where the timeline dropped off into a deep pit.
It would make a good movie, if turning our not to be true.

When I lived in Memphis, TN all the churches began preaching "it's the end of the world"' during the fall of 1990 (OR '91, can't remember) - my boss, a tightwad, went out and purchased 2 new computers for his family. He laughed, telling me "Hey, I'm not going to have to pay for it...the end is near!"
I guess he had to pay for them after all...

Scientists have been slowly climbing on board, here. Some say the Earth is due for a polar shift, that could very well occur in 2012. Our survival would be dependant upon the degree of shift, and how quickly it happens. Ya gotta believe 'em, right? I mean, they went to college for this stuff.
People have been on about polar shifts for a very long time but not scientists apart from to debunk the idea!
I have a tendency to believe as much I hear from scientists as I hear from politicians or advertisers! lol
Some scientists have said this, recently. Of course, they have all been ridiculed by their colleagues. Then again, it could just be a ploy to turn our attenton away from other activities. Who knows?

BT - The poles switch position every several 1000s of years, but I do not think we know how several. The Chinese talked about this for 1000s of years, so perhaps they know over there. They express it poetically as well, as the dragon and tiger changing places to go on with advanced learning.

I already was well aware of their idea of the Great Purification.
The Kogi are a South American tribe who have a system of knowing what signs to watch out for too and they call us "the Younger Brother." They are like the Hopi but for the southern part of America. Like the Hopi they were entrusted with knowledge by their Great Spirit.

I watched the BBC documentary on the Kogi all those years back - ‘From the Heart of the World - The Elder Brothers’ Warning’ - and remember they cut a rope bridge between us and them to signify they had delivered their warning and were going back to their way of life wanting no more contact with the Younger Brother. That was many years ago now and the Kogi had seen enough signs to warn them to warn the world then. Sadly the world wasn't listening! I personally believe it is well worth considering what these people have to say!

You can't help thinking that something bad is going to happen, but we need to think positive, and perhaps we will be able to manipulate time and space and end up with a better world.

Fascinating hub! I watched a 'documentary' a couple months ago on these prophecies (can't remember which channel). It suggested that the end of days predicted for 2012 could be averted if one of the missing Mayan crystal skulls was found and reunited with the others. The program postulated that although the origin of the skulls is unknown, there was reason to believe that they could have been created by superior life forms. Whilst it was an interesting program, I did find it a bit far-fetched to be honest. But then the British MOD decided to release all its backlog of information about UFO sightings and reports from the last (?) 100 years, I think along with France and some other European countries. Its a bit unclear why, but it does get one thinking!
It all comes down to beliefs and what is actually true! There are sources that debunk the crystal skulls. As for the release of UFO reports and far more mainstream media attention the subject has been getting there are two lines of thought: firstly that it is good because at last the governments are starting to come clean, but secondly that this is just another part of the conspiracy and control system and is part of Project Bluebeam in which staged UFO displays are to take place using Earth-made craft and/or holographic technology and that the media will then announce that aliens are invading the planet and declare martial law everywhere and then bring in the New World Order world army to fight the manufactured threat. Before they can do this they need to get the public to accept that UFOs and aliens are real. This complicates matters further because people will have to ask themselves are these real good aliens and craft or is this part of a n incredible hoax!

On the surface, these theories sound like rather schizotypal ideas, but if you step back and analyze it from a detached perspective, there are some current trends that cannot be ignore. For example, with this new wave of thinking that incorporate ideas such as the Law of Attraction and other similar themes, the idea from the second website that mind control will begin with instilling the masses with a new belief that 'god is speaking directly from within his or her own soul' makes absolute sense. Furthermore, much of the information I have been reading about new age theories (via many books and internet websites) all point to the human ego as being at fault for why we are so unhappy and cannot connect with our spiritual source. I agree that the ego is at fault for many things, but these sources suggest that to be truly happy, one must divorce him/herself from the ego, otherwise known as one's sense of self or identity. Take away a person's sense of individuality, and suddenly mind control is as simple as clicking a button on a remote control. If the ego serves no valid, functional purpose in human existence, then we would not have all been born with one. Maybe the ego is the Antichrist's biggest obstacle to overcome. Who knows what the truth is? We can but have faith i suppose!

Be very careful here. You people need to get your facts straight. The world may or may not end in 2012. It might end this week!! You should spend more time living your life the way God intended and less trying to figure out when it might end. Ever since the begining of Man, we have tried to predict when the world would end. Many times ( like now) there have been reason to think that this is the time. To the best of my knowledge, the world never ended. You should live your life like the world could end every day. If you want to predict things, try sports. God knows the day and time that the world will end. Nobody else has a clue. We can take all these readings and make a case for every year since the begining. If you really believe the world will end in 2012, please send me your money every month till then ( you won't need it ) It is very easy to interpit & alter prophecy to whatever is convenient for that period of time.

I have always thought 2012 would just be "the end of days AS WE KNOW IT"... I don't (know) exactly what will happen then, as nobody can be sure... But we can be sure that people will get more anxious as 2012 approaches. It may cause world-wide panic if they are not educated correctly. There are so many theories that no one person can be place their finger on just one theory. Which theory do you believe?
I don't know what will happen but personally I won't be surprised if we carry on as we did before! I don't foresee any mass panics because the majority of people don't know anything about this so for them it is just another date.

I don't know, but I'm having a hard time taking this serious. 2012 it's gonna be just that - 2012. How many times have people already proclaimed "the end is near" or that something will happen (just think about the whole millennium hysteria and nostradamus stuff) - yet, it never did. We're still crusing along just fine (as fine as it gets with atomic bombs and greedy b*stards ruling the world).
To that last person: When it comes to 'the end of the world' 2012 is the only one out of all the supposed 'end of the worlds' that was predicted centuries ago, and even beyond that by multiple people and civilizations in history. I don't believe in it, but if you're going to deny it, you need to look at more than just 'Uhhh... it hasn't ended yet so it never will.' Even if the chances are 1 in one trillion, how do you know that people havent predicted the end of the world 999,999,999,999 times? You can never be sure that the next time, won't have a different ending. Regardless of what your theory involves.

There have been many times throughout history calling for our demise and for all of the righteous to be called above so it's hard to 100% believe that the end will come but I, too, believe in the word apocalypse in the meaning that it is an awakening and we will see things differently. I just hope it is for the better! I sort of think that maybe we will be contacted by extraterrestrials and that may be our awakening. I just can't believe that all of humanity will suddenly live in harmony in these hectic times. I think there needs to be an awakening - and something so extraordinary we have to rethink what we have been doing. Great hub BTW!

thinking of the theory about the alignment with the black hole in the centre of the galaxy; i dont believe that it will affect us, as if it was that powerful then all the stars in the interior rim of the hub of the galaxy would be totally anihillated since aeons. Something is going to happen but i don't believe it will be visibly noticeable. I am very curious as to what will occur though as i have been studying this topic as well as many related ones for a long time now. I dont believe in the mass enlightenment/rapture though, although then again i am encountering many people who are beginning to get some strange new effects happening with both their consciusness, and their bodies (including psychic ability). Enlightenment onlycomes with great effort and self sacrifice as well as renunciation - such miracles do not happen when we are lazy and indulge in self centredness. Psychinc powers, however, do not rely on spiritual purity (silavisuddha), rather on mind purity/clear concentrative powers (Cittavisuddha) - i recommend the practise of purity (minimum 5 precepts) more than the practise of Psyching powers. Reason being;
the buddhs'a first 2 teachers, who were ascetics, were able to levitate, walk through walls, dive under the earth or walk on water. They attained the 8th Jhana, which is one state below enlightenment. But they never enlightened. Buddha however, took the practise of Jhana which he learned from them a lot further, and reached enlightenment. He then explained to us why reaching the 8th jhana and attainment of psychic powers is not as important as the practise of purity;
a person who attains special powers but does not attain the pure heart can still get angry, make a drastic mistake, and fall into the infernal realms.. whereas a practitioner of purity and keeper of precepts will never fall into the hell worlds if he attains the sotapanna level or higher (stream entry). A sotapanna will only be reborn as human, deva, or brahmic entity (heavenly beings) and never as an animal or a monster/demon/ hell dweller.
The practise of purity actually also sometimes results in the arisal of psychic powers too, but the holder of such powers hardly uses them, (or at least doesnt let him/herself be seen to use those powers).
I spent most of my oyuth and early to middle age practising many occult lineages.. Now i am a Bhikkhu of the Buddha sangha (Buddhist Monk). Im glad too as the practise of Magic without precepts can lead one astray easily.

I doubt there will be an end to world as some predict. Things always change and for those affected, perhaps, it will seem like an end to it all. I do believe there will be major and drastic changes for many of us in the near future, but one could expect that without needing any predictions. Change is constant, while constancy is subject to change.

Question: When using a 13 moon calender, at what phase of the moon does a new month begin, and when does the year begin? I have been observing the moon phases for several years now, and have noted that the moon is not on a 28 day cycle. It is more like 28-30 days, and I am not sure what makes the difference.
I don't know the answer, sorry, Ivorwen! Whilst I may think that a 13 moon calendar sounds more sensible than what we live with I don't know when a month or year begins. I would think the next month starts after the latest full moon.

Great hub, amazing discussion! I grew up with a mother who constantly predicted that there would be a "shift" when I grew up. Although she assumed the "shift" would include the collapse of governments and banks, and result in a world where people lived off the land in a meritocracy, and not in fact the "shift" which has taken place, in which the economy and work ethic as we knew them are gone, along with most of our "opportunities."
Bearing that in mind, I suggest that the "world" will indeed end in some way, in 2012, but that this may not relate in any way, shape, or form to what we envision the end of the world looking like. It might not be the end of planet earth, or even of mankind's life on planet earth, but rather the end of a lifestyle or of all of our assumptions about what life on earth means.

There are several ancient cultures who studied the lunar cycles that ended their calendars on Dec 21,2012. Even some of the scientists are buying into the 2012 for other reasons. I can't remember which channel it was on (discovery, history, etc.) but I saw a show where some scientists believe that the rotation of the earth has changed every time we hit a new alignment (like we will in 2012), and that mass extinctions and the weather and geological changes become significant at that point.
could the earth actually change direction of rotation? And if so, how long will it take to slow down and rotate in the other direction? How would that affect our gravity, and how would it affect our weather patterns afterward? This isn't part of any conspiracy theory, but rather some scientists trying to decipher what happened to the earth in the past.
Personally, I'm looking more toward the fulfilment of the biblical prophesies. All of the increase in war, new diseases, the breakdown of the moral fiber of the world. About the only sign left is the rebuilding of the temple. Obama is trying to make piece with the Muslims, and between Pakastan and Israel. Obama is very charasmatic, and if you look at Nostradamus's predictions it fits too, because he has that one picuture that really small in the book had the words the man in English on them. He also used the reverse crescent moon when depicting the anti-christ. Obama is a muslim pretending to be a Christian. Am I the only one that is seeing too much coincidences between prophecies about the anti-christ and Barack Obama? I am not saying Barack is the anti-christ, but there are just too many coincidences and similarities to ancient text and prophecies to completely rule out the possibility that he may really be.

There is a misconception about the Myan prediction of 2012. the Myans never predicted the end of the world. The Myans watched lunar activity closely and had generalized predictions about a cycle, I believe it is 52year cyle. 2012 marks the end of another cycle. If you look back through history their cycle predictions are fairly acurate and a good summary of that block of history. Everyone called the 2012 the prediction because this is where they stopped their lunar calendar, however the Myans NEVER predicted the end of the world in 2012, this was done my modern man.

There are plenty of untapped resources and every day vast amounts of food are wasted! Go and see how much gets thrown out as unfit for human consumption and past it's sell-by-date in every city. Go to the nearest restaurant or takeaway and see how much food gets left and discarded. Why can many people do this while other stave to death each day?
Free energy has been known about for many years and is not used. Water we have is poisoned with fluoride and/or sold! When it rains in many places there are insufficient reservoirs built to catch and hold it. Why is that and why are not more made?

If you read the hub you´ll see why. It's based on the Mayan calendar because it comes to an end then but many people disagree. Many people don't think the world is coming to an end at all and I'd agree with them!
I know this sounds kind of freaky, but based on the Biblical book of Revelation, 3.5 days before the seventh and final trumpet of the seventh seal is sounded, pouring out the final seven plagues, thus beginning the thousand year reign of Christ, the two final witnesses are killed (and they rise again 3.5 days later). Let's say they are killed on December 21, 2012. 3.5 days later would be Christmas, right?
Well, check out what Revelation 11:8-10 says, "And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth." Considering the two final witnesses are on the earth for 3.5 years, that would mean they are here now...(I wonder?)
The other possibility is the prophesy in Daniel 7:25 that the antichrist (who kills these witnesses) thinks to change times and laws. Just some interesting thought.

I believe there could be some viability to this premonition, but the dates are wrong. The initial portion of the "Rapture" of the Christian Church was the Calling forth of the "dead in Christ" and it occurred in 1998. The Calling of the rest of the Church took place between 1998 and 2008. Anyone who was actually involved in that "Rapture" Knows exactly what I am talking about here. We are now in the Tribulation. I believe what was forseen here, was that Judgement of the fall of 2008. This led to the "7 years" of tribulation. Which we only Know that the 7 years is a length of time that is a "completion" of the years necessary for the tribulation. New Beginnings will take place after that and that is what this premonition is about. The period of time we are going to be allowed for going back to the Godly Way of Life.
