~Glass painting questions & answers~.

Who can do glass painting? ~Basically anyone can do art on glass, small kids & big ones alike!

Do I need to be an artist to paint art on glass? ~No not at all, painting art windows can be as easy as painting by numbers. Many different techniques can be used to produce great looking windows. This will all depend on your existing level of artistry. If you do not know  how to draw very well, you still can trace art on glass from our FREE  patterns or other available designs. *View Tips for more info.

Is it costly to paint art windows? ~Window art is very affordable whether you plan on doing it just for fun or as a business, all you need to get started are some basic primary colours, paint trays, a drop sheet and a few different sized brushes.

What kind of paint should I use? ~Most window paintings are meant to only be displayed for a short period  of time, the process of removing the painting afterwards should therefore  be an easy one. Keeping this in mind we suggest using either a "Tempera  paint" or an "Acrylic paint". Acrylic paints will adhere to the glass better than the Tempera paints but  is slightly more difficult to wash off. Acrylics can be applied on the  interior/exterior of the painted window and has a higher tolerance to wet  weather conditions. (Although I do recommend to paint any windows  from the inside as much as possible). Tempera paints can also be used for interior/exterior applications, but for  exterior applications, you do run the risk of having the paint run if it gets  wet from the weather conditions. The advantage of tempera paints over  acrylic is only that the paint is easier to clean off the window.

How long can I keep the painting on the windows? ~Over the years of painting windows, we have found that you can keep the  paintings up for years if you so choose. Just remember not to get the  painting wet!

What kind of brushes should I use? ~Any soft hair brushes work very well. We like to experiment with different  application tools, and have found that there really is no limit to what you  can use! Don't limit yourself, try new tools, be creative.

What other materials should I use? ~Here is a list of basic materials you will need; *primary paint colours, including white & black. *Brushes (fine tips for details & larger sizes for filling in colours). *Drop sheet. *Paint trays for mixing colours,( you can use any recycled container lids). *Paint rags. *Glass pencil for drawing your original outlines, (optional if not using a stencil). *Stencil of image to be reproduced. (optional if you are not using  free-hand.) *Water based marker for outlining of the design. *Water container to rinse brushes.

How do I remove the paint from the windows? ~Slightly wet the painted surface with water using a damp rag, allow a  minute for the paint to absorb the water. Repeat the same process again,  followed by using a plastic putty knife to scrape off the excess paint.  Repeat the first step again until the paint has all been removed. Using  clean water and a fresh rag, dampen the rag slightly and wipe the entire  window surface again.

Where do I get the materials needed to start painting windows? ~You will usually find these materials at your local arts & crafts store. You may also visit our sponsor by clicking on the above banner.

I have never painted a window before, how do I start? ~I recommend that you begin by painting a few of your windows at  home. This is great practice and the best way to get a feel for it. If you  make a mistake, simply wash it off and try it again. Practice makes perfect!  Everyone started at that point. We assure you that this is the best way to  build your confidence and learn new techniques.

I am not very confident with my artistic talents, what should I do? ~You do not have to be an accomplished artist to paint a great looking window, often simple looking designs have the greatest impact.  Confidence is something that builds stronger with time and knowledge.  Just give it a try, let your imagination do the work. Get a feel for it.

Mix some colours and paint an abstract painting on your window, this  unrestricted method will provide you with an insight on how the paint  reacts with the glass. Be like a big kid, just let the brush and the colours do their thing.

This is fantastic! Only one time have I painted windows. It was a snow scene for a local business. It was not a paid job, it was for our Art Club, but it turned out great! I really appreciate the info on painting windows, I would like to do more once I learn more about it.
