Wine Making

Every time we drink a glass of wine in a party, we never think of the long process behind it. In fact, sometimes, the wine we’re drinking seldom represents the fresh, raw grapes that we buy in the supermarket. It’s because it has undergone several wine making steps with the help of wine making supplies that makes wine making both science and art.

Wine making is a science because there is a set of definite steps before raw, fresh grapes can be transformed into a glass of wine. But even though, these grapes undergo the same process, still the end products vary—this is where the stake of the manufacturer came in when he leaves a distinctive note that makes it different from other wines. In the wine making process, there are several steps namely harvesting, crushing and pressing, fermentation, clarification, aging and bottling. In these steps, the wine makers could experiment and make revisions from what has been tested. For example, in the fermentation stage, he could either reduce or increase the amount of yeast and sugar content. But everybody has to take pay particular attention with the temperature during wine making because this affects the acidity and the overall output of the wine. When fermentation has been started, there should not be any interventions of any kind. Changes in temperature, for example, will make the fermentation unstable thus affecting the overall taste of the wine. Movement surrounding the fermentation machinery or bottles will also disturb the sediments that lie underneath the wine bottle. These sediments, at one point in the wine making process should be separated from the final wine output. Wooden corks, that are supposed to protect the wine from free radicals, can sometimes allow the smell of the wine cellar to enter the wine bottles and containers. It is, in fact, advised to remove all other food products from the wine cellar. Other factors like angle of storage, amount of light entering the cellar and ventilation will also affect the whole thing.

Established companies are so particular which keep in the kind of wine making supplies. For example, the fermentation buckets should have a larger lid cover than the wine container to keep off free radicals from entering. These fermentation buckets come in rubberized materials with o-ring holes in the top and airtight sealed containers that can be adjusted anytime you want it. Another wine making supply is the airlocks that come in two different kinds. These are the two piece airlocks and the bubbler airlocks. The two piece airlocks would allow bubbles containing carbon dioxide to escape outside the bottle while bubbler airlocks are used in secondary fermentations. There are also secondary fermentation carboys that are used in wine mixing. To get the exact acidity and density of the wine, one can use the acid-test kit and the triple-scale hydrometer. There are other measuring tools, measuring tools, wine presses, bottles and corks to complete the list of wine making supplies.

Having a complete set of wine making supplies still can never affect the success of the wine making process. It needs specialty and expertise of the person manipulating the tools to come up with his desired results.
