Meaning of a Wing Tattoo

Wing tattoos are actually very popular. They can appear in different forms and mean different things. The true meaning of any tattoo will be different upon each wearer. Wing tattoo designs can often have inspirational or spiritual symbolism. In many myths, wings often have to be earned.

Wings are commonly associated with:

  • Birds
  • Butterflies
  • Dragonflies
  • Fairies
  • Mythological winged creatures

Wing tattoos can represent:

  • Speed
  • Elevation
  • Freedom
  • Aspiration

Those who choose a wing tattoo tend to opt to have it placed on their back, as that is where the angels where them. Most traditional feathered wings will take up the width of the shoulders. Aside from those pictured here, I have seen wings tattooed on napes and hips, as well as arms and backs.

Angel Wings

The traditional feathered style angel wing is probably the more popular wing tattoo design. They tend to be soley black ink and tattooed on the back of the recipient.

Wings that are commonly associated with angels, tend to symobolize:

  • A spiritual mean
  • Enlightenment
  • Guidance
  • Protection (to be taken under the wing of...)
  • Inspirational

Sometimes angle wing tattoos incorporate other symbols into the design. This tends to just add a little something to the set of wings. Usually this is done on lower back tattoos and between the shoulder blades.

Mythological Creatures

Mythological creatures that are commonly notated with wings include:

  • Fairies
  • Dragons
  • Pegasus
  • Griffons

Wings that depict a mythological creature can symbolize:

  • Alchemy
  • Magic
  • Transfomation
  • The elements (earth, sky, wind, and fire)

Tribal Wings

Tribal tattoos are very popular in today's and yesterday's society. The typical black tattoos with simplistic designs can be replicated in a wing form.
