Every River Is Wise

The wisdom drawn from a river is an ancient metaphor for life and flow. The life of a river is expressed in it's flow just as our lives are a continuous flow of experiences. Like the river, our life has many twists and turns.

"Between the banks of pleasure and pain flows the river of life. If you spend much time on either bank you will miss out on life" ~ Nisargadatta Maharaj.

June is National Rivers Month where communities across the country hold events to spotlight the importance of their local waterways.  I thought it would be a good time to go with the flow and learn the lessons and legends of the river along with students across the nation who are studying from teacher selected library sources such as "The Waters of Life: The Facts and the Fables" and other suggested sources such as "How the Fly Saved the River" and "How Coyote Made the Columbia River".

“To protect your rivers, protect your mountains.” – Emperor Yu of China, 1600 B.C.

Lessons of the river can keep us focused on our journey whether it's for self-discovery, inner awareness, transformation or recovery. The river of life brings daily blessings wherever it passes, but like water itself, there could be much more going on beneath the surface. Subtle signs on the surface can be symptoms of a more serious underlying problem that could be crucial to our survival if not detected early. All too often we resist the painful currents and miss the opportunity at hand to learn and to grow.

Lest we not forget the warning signals the crew of the Titanic received throughout the day before that fateful night of April 14, 1912. Incoming warnings and messages and the constant drop in temperature were just the surface signals of an ice-field that lie ahead and three-fourths of the iceberg that lay unseen beneath the calm ocean surface. The captain was busy at a dinner party in his honor and other crew were busy despatching commercial traffic that kept them from heeding the call to safety.

There are many parallels between the river and our lives. Some days we move aimlessly or meander through life with no map or compass in hand. We long for the river offering peaceful moments of serenity. Stay present for It can also catch us when we let our guard down, sometimes leaving us to start life over or do something different that will bring nourishment for our body, mind and soul.

The most important spiritual lesson we can learn from the rapids of life and the river is that the river knows no time. On the river, all you have is the "now". Yesterday and tomorrow have no value when we are out there navigating the rapids. You are totally immerced in the joy of the present moment. The river can drive the message home in simple wisdom if only we will listen. Either way, life will go on because the river of life never ends.

You cannot understand life and its mysteries as long as you try to grasp it.  Indeed, you cannot grasp it just as you cannot walk off with a river in a bucket.  If you try to capture running water in a bucket, it is clear that you do not understand it and that you will always be disappointed, for in the bucket the water does not run.  To "have" running water you must let go of it and let it run. ~Alan Watts from "The Wisdom of Insecurity".

Interesting Hub! I spend a lot of my time hiking, and each trek seems to lead me to some source of water.

For some reason I am drawn to it. It soothes me when I get there and I always spend time just staring at it.

Perhaps there is more to this than I thought. Thanks!

Well that explains why my mother always told me that when I went to the river of life, take a bucket, not a teaspoon. Nice Hub.

I LOVED this Dottie! Thank you so much. Parallels indeed... beautiful ones at that. "learn to be water - direction is any way you can travel, your shape whatever you naturally become..."

Today my significant other and I were talking about how connected animals are to nature, how they flow; the squirrel doesn't worry about his nuts stash for the winter, the geese fly north when its time, all as a result of being in harmony with its nature and always being in the now, as they can't conceptualize. Your river parallel reminded me of the importance of being in the flow by paying attention to the signs, and being in the now. I enjoyed this hub!

That is the beauty of the earth of how things fit together because of the universe watching over creation. Animals eat on schedule, at night wild animals hunt. Everything is taken care of, even the weather, the wind, and the clouds, everything in its proper place. We humans too are taken care of if we would only be in the now.

Thanks VioletSun for your reflections.

Dottie, what a lovely, inspirational, and memorable piece of work. I live beside the river now and am so happy I do. Some days it is so peaceful and still, however, others it is surprising how quickly it can change. One afternoon I was speaking to my neighbor that lives directly on the river and before I turned to go inside, the river rose and began rushing at 30-40 mph right behind her. It was truly an amazing experience to see. Thanks Dottie - loved it!

Love the way you compare life with the flow of rivers. Go with the flow certainly takes on a whole new meaning--don't attempt to catch the beauty of flowing water in a bucket--beautiful lesson and powerful imagery.

Love all the quotes--make so much sense!

Lucky you Forget-Me-Not to live beside the river which is one of my dreams. As a youngster I camped many a night beside a river. There is nothing more soothing and calming to lull you to sleep than the sound of rushing water. So was the lesson learned with your neighbor "don't turn your back on the river for even a second"? hehe. Sounds like an amazing and a bit scary experience to me! Thanks for stopping in. Take care.

Hello Angel Dottie, the river of life brought me here after nights wandering around trying to make hubs. Hahaha Well the hubchallenge is over and I just made 18 hubs so I failed and yet proud of myself for my accomplishment. I love the feelings that evoke within me as I read your hub sis. It reminded me so much to live in the present and to always be in the constant flow of life. So beautiful...thank you for sharing the wisdom from the rivers of life. Hugs... :-)

So happy to see you Angel Michelle, you're looking all rested up after the challenge which I am so proud of you for. I know that you don't really believe that you failed for it's demonstrated in your next comment "and yet proud of myself for my accomplishment". I'm quite certain you know that the only real failure is the failure to try which leaves you a winner in every sense of the word. Being in the flow of life will never give you a reason not to try. You my dear sis were in the flow! Big hug for you! :)

Thanks Dottie for this interesting article. I live very close to the sea and so I am familiar with all the sentiments associated with associating life itself with the various moods of the sea. The fact remains that all rivers flow into the sea and thus the "quality" the sea has to be sum total of the qualities of all the rivers put together, right?

Just kidding ... have a nice weekend! :)

It's nice how you have connected life with the river. As I am afraid to go deeper in the water (not much of a swimmer =P) I can proudly say that I am going with the flow and learning from the river of life. Good thing God is not giving me too much current to handle, and if there are some He made sure that I have my life vest with me. =)

Dottie1 profile image

Dottie1  says:

Love your comment Charia. Going with the flow sometimes will take us into deeper water like it or not, hehe... but that's what really stretches us to grow, just part of the life force from the waters that God built the earth upon.

Charia Samher profile image

Yes you are so so right about that. But most of the times we get to realize that after we get out of the deeper part, well better late than never. =)

Hi Dottie, I just wanted to drop by and see what wisdom will I get from the river (and from you) today. Hmmm...You wrote, "The most important spiritual lesson we can learn from the rapids of life and the river is that the river knows no time. On the river, all you have is the "now". Awesome! This struck me so I will take these words and reflect on it as I go about my work. Thanks sis Dottie! Love...

Thanks sis for your comments and presence today! Love...

Very nice Dotti1!! And in the Bible it states; "He who believes in Me, From his innermost being will flow rivers of living waters." John 7:38 The Holy Spirit of course being the Living Water. A River is a wonderful metaphor for cleansing.
