63WoW Maps - Getting Back in the Game
When it comes to World of Warcraft, I just can't stay away. Oh, I try. I complain, I swear I'm done with it forever, and once I even canceled my account, but I still keep coming back.
Why? Well, I enjoy MMORPGs, I won't deny that. When a new one comes out, I'll give it a shot. But no matter how many I try, I still end up back with WoW. I've often wondered what it is about WoW that keeps drawing me back. I mean, when you get right down to it, the gameplay isn't that different from any other MMORPG. The graphics look nice, but again, they're not amazingly better than any other game.
No, what I think keeps bringing me back is my fondness for WoW addons. For the uninitated, WoW addons are little programs that let you alter the functionality of the interface. I've got addons that upgrade my WoW maps, that let me buy poison supplies (I'm a rogue) in stacks, help with gathering, keep track of my stats, and more! I've never seen that kind of customization in an MMORPG. In fact, there aren't even many games in general that let you do things like this.
Some of my all-time favorites and addons that I can't play without are:
- Auctioneer - Keeps a database of auction house prices so I can tell if I'm getting a good deal on the AH or how much I should try to sell something for. Saves me from having to know the values of the thousands of items floating around.
- MetaMap - Gives me upgraded WoW maps that includes maps for instances, which is really handy.
- Titan Bar - Probably not one that everyone will want, but I like having a bar at the top of the screen that shows me how much experience per hour I'm getting, how much gold I've earned, and how many throwing daggers I've got left.
- Gatherer - This is an addon for the mini-map. It shows me where I've found metal nodes and herb gather points in the past. Since these don't change, I can quickly run right to where they should be (assuming they haven't already been harvested) and saves me tons of time.
And those are just a few of the addons that make sure to install when I play. There are plenty of others that are useful, but these are my favorites. And the best part is, since these are all user-generated, there are new ones all the time.

I've been playing MMORPGs for a long time now. I got started with EverQuest and they've had their hooks into me ever since. I buy all the expansions, I even have the WoW maps hanging on the walls in my computer room! What really got me interested was the way that the game worlds seemed brand new with every game. Because of this, every time a new MMORPG came out, I'd buy it and play. So, I've pretty much tried them all at this point, give or take a couple. EverQuest was my first love, and I'll never forget it, but now my heart belongs to World of Warcraft. When it comes to World of Warcraft, or WoW for the time impaired, there isn't much to not like. Sure, its got some grinding, but what MMORPG doesn't? If that kind of thing bothers you, then perhaps this isn't your genre. There are many things that WoW does well, like the art direction, but for me, the thing that makes it stand head and shoulders above the competition is the user interface. Simply put, it gives you so many different options for customization that probably no two players have their interface set up the exact same way. That's where WoW maps come in. There are tons of different WoW addons that let you change or improve the maps in the game. I'm going to be talking about my favorites and hopefully you'll be able to make use of my reviews and increase your enjoyment of the game. - 17 months ago

heh - good point about the addons. One that I find a mage simply cannot do without are the debuff addons. I think the other appeal of WoW is in the collection of stuff. There is so much cool equipment, pets, and things that you can collect, you just keep playing more and more. Finally they designed the game well so that it is a challenge for high level players, but the initial learning curve is pretty small and you can solo for a long time. This is in contrast to FF online and Everquest.
