Once upon a time there was a fashion designer who made pretty shoes for incredibly beautiful and famous women in Hollywood. His love of shoes gave him the push to go to anatomy school and learn about the foot. From this knowledge came the creation of the wedge shoe. Salvatore Ferragamo wasn't just the creator of the wedge style shoe, he was also the creator of the cork wedge. His amazing ingenuity came from the rationing of materials during the onset of war. Not only did Ferragamo create a masterful shoe, he created a style of shoe that lasted through the ages and was the perfect addition to every wardrobe. And women lived happily ever after.

Womens wedge shoes have become a staple of ever woman's closet since the day they were created. The shoe is known for its comfort and style as well as the ability to find styles for every occasion. From sneakers to high heels, wood to rubber, the wedge shoe has it all. But with all the different choices of styles, it's sometimes difficult to know which shoes go with what outfits. I have put together a short list of outfits and the best style of wedges to wear with each outfit.

It's a common misconception that the wedge is made for casual wear only. In fact, many fashion designers create styles that are for formal, professional and fashion forward women's clothing. The top designers all create wedges that are designed to go with the very best fabrics and outfits. Just take a look at fashion week, for example. You can find many of the models wearing wedge shoes, as well as stilettos, with various pant suits, fashionable skirts and dresses.

If you're prone to wearing a pant suit, you have a lot of choices for wedge shoe styles. While most rubber sole shoes aren't appropriate, almost every other heel style will look fantastic. One of the great things about a pant suit is they can be worn with wedge boots, sandals, and even ankle boots. There are lovely cork wedges that look terrific with dark pant suits. I've found numerous styles from austere and thong sandals that would look incredible with suits, and especially pant suits.

Remember the higher the heel, the better the look, but unlike skirt suits, lower heels can look really good with pants. Since wedge shoes are so comfortable and easy to balance in, it's safe to choose a higher heel that you're used to wearing.

A great skirt can be worn with so many different styles and heights of shoes that there aren't many inappropriate styles. There are, however, styles and heights that really add a lot of power and vogue to a skirt suit.

Rubber soled shoes are never a good idea for professional outfits. Not pant suits and certainly not business skirt suits. Whether high or low, never wear a rubber sole (a little poetry for your daily reading). Other than that, the sky is the limit.

Wood heels can look exceptionally good with any kind of cream or black suits in general. With a skirt, try a higher heel to really flex the muscle in the lower leg. This muscle defines and beautifies the leg. Additionally, the higher heel really lifts and heightens the legs, giving a leaner and more powerful look. Wood heels are also more stable and, since they're often covered in leather, a streamlined professional bearing.

A great pair of cork heels can also have a place with suits. There are fashionable patent leather and strong black leather wedges that really show off the foot and add a special style to the skirt.

One very powerful look to wear with skirts is a knee high black leather wedge boot. The feel and overall style of this look is reminiscent of New York chic business women. Not only is it a professional look, it's also a great high fashion look. Other colors of boot are brown and tan. Stay away from white, gold or silver boots, instead of looking professional, you'll end up looking like a go-go dancer. Probably not the style you're aiming for when going to the office.

Clear wedge shoes are almost always a bad choice for a professional office, however, if you're in a design center or other less austere office spaces, a little funky fashion might brighten up a lovely skirt suit.

Sandals are always a great choice in later spring, summer and early fall. It's not a good idea to sport a fully open sandal during the other months. If the weather is lovely and warm, a great peep to or open toe wedge will look lovely.

I love the look of wedge shoes with dresses. Not only the shoes, but the boots as well. Both styles can look really amazing when worn with the right dress. Add a blazer or cardigan, and you can really work a wedge shoe with a fashionable, elegant dress.

Sheath dresses look perfect with wedge sandals and peep toe styles. Specifically designs that have ankle straps and more fabric over the foot, look terrific with fall dresses. Flare skirts and pencil skirts can both be worn with boots, but remember, as with all heels, the shorter the skirt, the higher the heel.

One aspect about dresses, which I love, is that they often have a lot of different designs and patterns. In general, suits tend to be monotone colors or pinstripe and there isn't a lot of deviation into prints. Dresses with stripes, prints, bold colors give women the opportunity to wear much more flamboyant shoes with intricate design and embellishments. While you don't want to overwhelm a beautifully patterned dress with shocking patterned shoes, you can still add a shoe with more panache to a printed dress. Even monotone shoes can have some incredible design work done with the leather and heels to make it more special.

Most upscale designer's shoes can be classified as either formal or fashionable. The more formal shoes are better fitted for the red carpet, while the more fashionable shoes are perfect for fashionistas in the business world and women like Victoria Beckham. These designers typically have beautifully made shoes that are perfect for a lawyers office or an interior designer's office. They're idea for the more austere office spaces, or the less formal atmospheres. Designers like Anne Klein, Michael Kors and Donna Karan are perfect examples.
