Women's Health -Fibroids
63What Lurks Beneath the Painful Menstrual Cycle
Did you know that one of the most common causes of heavy bleeding and pain during your menstrual cycle are fibroids? Fibroids are most common in the African American population of women but can be found within other ethnicities. The cause of fibroids are unclear however they most commonly tend to grow within the walls of the uterus. They can range in size from something of a microscopic nature to the size of a mass the fills the uterus.
Symptoms associated with fibroids can vary but include heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure, enlarged lower abdomen, intestinal and bladder pressure and difficulty conceiving a child. Some women may experience all of the symptoms described above while others may only endure one of the identified complications.
Treatment of fibroids varies based on where the woman may be in her life. For example, for those who do not wish to have additional children or any children at all may consider having uterine embolization or a hysterectomy. For those who may not wish to have a hysterectomy or would like the opportunity to later conceive, there is a procedure known as a myomectomy. Some physicians even identify the possibility of utilizing medication to help shrink the fibroids. Women who have fibroids should take the time to discuss and research all options available to them with their physician.
