Red cedar is known for its durability and resistance to insect damage. This is why most wood shingle roofs are made with this wood. Another common wood used for wood roofs is pine but is has to be treated with some preservatives to protect the wood from insect damage.

Wood shingles and shakes are available in varying lengths ranging from 16 to 24 inches. Width may also vary. Wood shingles can also be custom made as per your roofing requirements. Wood shingles are relatively smooth with deep grooves. Rough-hewn shingles are called shakes and offer a more rustic appearance to your roof.

Wood Shingle and Shake Roofing

When it comes to wooden roofs, two of the favorites are: Real cedar shingles and shakes because of their natural and rustic appearance. Shingles are thinner than shakes with smooth and sawn surfaces. Shakes can be sawn or hand-split that gives it a more rugged appearance. Expected life of Shingles is 15 to 25 years while shakes may last up to 50 years.

In places where the climate is humid, fungus and mildew can be a problem. Roofing experts recommend that wood roofs should be treated with a fungicide after one year or installation. You can also go for wood shingles or shakes that are pretreated with preservatives that protects the wood from fungus and mildew.

In fire-prone areas, wood shingles and shakes may need pressure treatment with fire retardant or may be entirely forbidden.

Wood shakes, with deeply grooved textures helps air circulation. These can be applied over solid sheathing with interlays of 30-pound roofing felt. Some shakes may be applied over open sheathing. Consult some exterior home improvement expert or roofing contractor before installing wood shakes on your roof.

Wood shingles are available in variety of fancy-cut shapes such as cove, fish- scale, and V-cut patterns. Wood shingles installation requires open sheathing - 1 by 6 boards that are spaced apart. These spaces allow air to circulate around the shingles and prevents moisture buildup underneath the wood.
