Word of the Day Continues

Becoming smarter, one word at a time.

I didn't set out to "tutor" my child or drill him on facts to make him learn during the summer, but he was always asking "What does that mean?" when I was talking to him so one night as I was getting him ready for bed I gave him a word and explained what it meant. I asked him to repeat it and asked if he remembered what it meant. He's got great memory and comprehension skills, so we did this the next night, then the next.....

So far, only a week into Summer vacation he has learned these words and he's only five: dehydrated, ascend, instinct, infinity and a few I'm afraid I've forgotten.

This is fun for both of us because it's spontaneous (There's my next word!) and I don't even know the Word of the Day until I think of it that moment.

Try this with your child if you haven't already and I can tell you, not only does it create a stronger bond between you both, it will impress his/her teacher next semester!

As of August 1st, still adding onto my almost six-year-old's vocabulary everyday. He must have learned at least thirty words so far this summer.

He's even started giving me a "word for the day" which is fun and silly because some of the words he comes up with are actual words and he gives me his own meaning. I'm so pleased that he looks forward to this every evening, but frankly, it's getting to where, I'm running out of words on the top of my head to give him. I might have to give out the Thesaurus!
