How does a Wordpress theme work?

Wordpress themes are coded using PHP tags and CSS. The PHP tags call features the wordpress engine…for example display post title or author. When the page is loaded in a browser that content is displayed as html. Themes are formatted using standard CSS (Cascading Style Sheet). The style information is saved into a separate file, which tell a web browser how to format the page. For example all text that has the class H1 might be size 24, bold, and use the font Arial.
