I think you are on the right track, all in one SEO pack and ping optimizer are good plugin for SEO. However, it is more important that you do the keyword research right to pick the best search keyword with the least competiton.
Just my 2 cents.
All the wonderful plugins will not help at all if you don't have quality content. Content is King! and don't forget it!
A little tip to get your blog visited quickly by the search engines is to sign up the the webmaster tools of Google, MSN and Yahoo and add your RSS feed! It will ceratiny speed up the search engines visits to your site!
Do you need your own domain or can you use the wordpress domain?

I use wordpress as the blogging platform and found Wordpress is very to use.
How did you do that to make the Wordpress very search engine friendly?
I'm still new to blogging but the plugins like "all in one SEO pack" is very useful for SEO purpose.
Beside that I regularly update my wordpress blog every 2 or 3 days and I notice this makes GoogleBot frequently come to my blog.
Another plugin I use is "Ping Optimizer", with this useful pugin I can do pinging without worrying about being accused for doing splog.
